Old Taylor Versus New Taylor | Comparing my 20 year old Taylor 914c against a brand new 914ce

  • For 20 years I have been playing a Taylor 914c in stages, in churches and at home. It has logged hundreds of hours, had multiple pickups and was even stolen once only to be recovered months later. As guitars age they “open up” becoming more resonant. This is due to the wood actually changing. Releasing volatiles and in a way becoming lighter while also more stable. This comparison is an interesting one because it isn’t comparing apples to apples. The Taylor 914ce has changed a lot over the years. Some of the tone woods have changed along with aesthetics and design. In this video we compare the two to see what’s changed and what effect 20 years can have.

Love the video, Chris! I have a 1997 514c and bought it used in 2000 so I also have had it 20 years. Your playing, enthusiasm and love for guitars is awesome. This is a great review, Chris. Thank you so much! I bought my V-class 914ce when it first came out in 2018. Quite an expenditure for me, and I have doubted my decision at times (should I have bought an 814 instead?). In two years, it has opened up and sounds better and better. It's comforting to know you own a 914, too! I look forward to warmer tones as the wood of my 914 ages. If only I could make it sound anywhere near as good as you can!

I bought a 610ce new in 2001, I still have it. the top on it has turned a beautiful honey gold color, and it has ALWAYS been a CANNON. It has amazing tone that really cuts through a mix, and booming volume acoustically. Every place I play it, people say WOW that guitars sounds amazing. I've owned hundreds of guitars and I now own 4 other Taylors. I never could bring myself to let that 610ce go. I had the RENEW package done on her at Sweetwater, and she sounds and plays as beautiful as ever. I have a 522e 12 fret that I play A LOT now too, because my playing style and taste has changed, but I sure love Taylor guitars.

Beautiful guitars from sound, esthetics and playability perspectives. And I do believe your talent is demonstrated equally well on both models, though your old one and you have quite a history. I bought the 914 ce as well a few months after I started playing guitar in 2018. I was a bit nervous because of the cost, but I did some research about guitar making and tone woods. (The perks of retirement~ time on your hands!) I also thought it would be an heirloom and my adult children are all over it. I can hear its tone opening up in the 3 years that I've had it. I agree that the best guitar to buy is the one you want to play, and this one is so hard to put down. Unless you are getting into custom builds, its hard to do any better. Really enjoy your videos. Merry Christmas and all the best in 2022!

I'm a huge Taylor fan. I play an 814ce daily & love it... Your [personal] Taylor just sings to me for a myriad of reasons. This does not diminish the way I feel about the newer one though. Magnificent tonal-blend, especially for not being "seasoned" properly yet! 😉 But, I swear I can feel the stories, emotions, the dreams, letdowns & the triumphs "literally" sing from your 914c. Beautiful playing as well, Sir. Informative & fun to watch! 😉 💜 🍀 👻 🎶

Oh Boy ! I really loved the story of your 20 year old Taylor and your attitude on playing a beloved instrument.
Same with me. I have a 2009 Taylor 615 Jumbo. This model has been kicked out of the Taylor Portfolio some years ago for some reason. I see that Andy Powers has done magic on the newer Taylor models and together with Bob Taylor both seem to evolve the company in a wonderful way.
But hey, I just love my old 615 as it is and I find that it ages in a beautiful way developing more and more character in it's sound. And I also love the way it plays and how this Taylor Jumbo Shape sits to the body and also love the look of it.
I even think that Andy and Bob should consider building it again :)
Wonderful video Chris - and I honestly find that both guitars sounded wonderful. But honestly the tones that you have pulled out of your trusty old one were just magic !! 👍

I like to play aggressive and the bright and harder tone of the newer one would be my choice. I always feel that getting pleasing soft tones can be done on most guitars, but when you want to take the next bend at 180 mph (and your pipes screaming) then you'll need the harder wood.
You didn't lay into these guitars hard. When you do, you'll hear more difference between them and the sitka will hammer notes harder in a boogie or old time shuffle.

Great demonstration. The 1990 one definitely has more warmth and smoothness. The new 914 is fantastic too, and I would never notice a 'tightness" to the tone if not compared side-by-side with yours. This is a problem that exists with most side-by-side comparisons- they are testing axes right out of the box, when they are not at their best. I'd like to see a comparison of 5-year old guitars, but that of course would be a lot harder to procure. Like a 5 year-old 814 vs a 5 year-old Furch Red Deluxe, or a 5 year-old D-18 vs a 5 year-old D-45. I'd like to see how these will sound after I've had them for a while. But I'm just dreaming.

Loved the sound coming from both - I'm not at all convinced that the difference was much if anything to do with age of the guitars. Perhaps if you demo/comparo them with a variety of playing styles - blues, flatpicking, rhythm, fingerstyle, country, folk...I would be able to discern between the two. Have to say I love how the new one was amazing and perfect "right out of the box"....impressive.

I loved the choice of music also. I was able to hear the difference in the two guitars and like most people liked the older version. One of your comments was about collecting guitars. I play and have a couple of guitars that I love and play all the time. I also have several guitars that I bought for no other reason except to have them. Mainly guitars that my musical heroes play. I've been given nasty looks and comments from people when I tell them. I feel it's no different than collecting anything that you like whether it be coins, figurines or guitars. I get a joy out of looking at what I feel are works of art. Thanks for the videos and keep them coming.

I agree with you on collecting. It shouldn’t matter to anyone else how someone chooses to spend his/her money. If it brings you joy and you can afford it then go ahead a buy it. I also agree that nice guitars are works of art themselves.
Personally, I’m obsessed with amps (though I do own multiple guitars), and my wife doesn’t understand my amp obsession in the least. She gets the differences in guitars, but to her an amp is just a box with a speaker in it. She doesn’t understand the need or desire to have more than one even though every single amp I own looks and sounds completely different from all the others.
By the way, I also own guitars like what my heroes play. I even got lucky, and have an actual guitar that was owned by one of my heroes. My wife bought that one for me fro Christmas three years ago.

Don't keep me waiting. Lol. Who's guitar do you have? Mine are just the same models. It's kinda weird talking about this today because a crazy thing happened last night to one of mine. At 6:10 a.m. my Fender Telecaster (blonde like Springsteen's)fell off the wall! I hear a crash and jump out of bed and in the next room it's laying on the floor. It slid right out of the hook. Really strange because I'm not sure how and it's never happened before.

    • @charlesbolton8471
      @charlesbolton8471 4 роки тому +1

I have a guitar that was owned by Steve Earle.
The guitar itself is interesting on its own because it is a prototype for a Gibson model that was only produced for one year(2005). It’s a Gibson Ranger it(and another model called the Pioneer) made up the Americana Series which came out to replace the Chet Atkins SST. It’s basically the same construction concept as the SST-a chambered mahogany body with a spruce top and the same pickup system from the SST. The Pioneer looks identical to the SST, but the Ranger is the shape of a Gibson L-OO acoustic.
I’m Springsteen fan myself and Telecasters are my favorite model of guitar partly because of him. I have owned a blonde one, but currently I have a Candy Apple Red one with a Seymour Duncan ‘59 humbucker in the neck, and Brad Paisley Signature model.
I hope your guitar is didn’t get damaged in its fall. Teles don’t always get along very well with wall hangers. Maybe the ghost of Tom Joad stoped by to strum a few chords and dropped it.

I've seen Steve a few times. Always enjoy him until the political rants. I have never once in the hundreds of shows I've attended went to hear someone's political leanings. Not even if I agree with you.
It looks like a small nick in the neck. Unfortunately it's right along the fret board. ☹

Terrific video, and I identify (mid-90s 810 owner). Your playing is maybe more inspired with the earlier guitar - and tone warmer - but I might choose the newer one in a recording session.

    I bought 2 Taylor dreadnought a 910 (1996) and a K20-M (1994).
I bought them at Tom Lee shop new. Until now I rarely play them and they are immaculate. Now I understand that they build the 910 differently. As for the K20-M they build only 30. I bought the two in the same day because I love the two and they sound very different and I could not stop myself to buy them. I also have the red catalogue that Taylor use as a marketing tool in those days. M2 cents.

I think the most of the difference in sound here comes from the wood - Engelmann vs Sitka. Two months ago, I bought a Yamaha LL6M, with Engelmann solid top. I played some other solid top guitars at the same price point, and some more expensive. And what I could hear was a huge difference between these two types of wood. I definitely liked Yamaha with Engelmann more. Yamaha marketing says that they use a technology of aging wood, it's called ARE, I don't know if it's just a marketing bulsh.... but the guitar sounds amazing.

Interesting video. I preferred the sound of the older guitar, but I'm not sure that was down to just age. Both guitars sounded good to me. I'm guessing most any guitar is going to sound just fine in this guy's hands - really nice playing by the way. I own a 1997 Taylor 510 that i purchase used around ten years ago. I had never really connected with any of the Taylor guitar I had tried before then, but this one was just different. Most importantly I really like the tone along with how resonant and balanced the guitar sounds. In fact it is amazingly well balanced despited it being a dreadnaught guitar. Sometimes you just never know.
What is really striking about this 510 is the quality of the woods used in what was one of Taylor's lower-priced standard production guitars back in 1997. The Engelmann top is just stunning - perfectly quartered with no runout at all, medullar rays are everywhere throughout the top and make the it appear alive when moving the guitar about with light shining upon it. The grain is also unbelievably tight and uniform throughout. In addition the Honduras mahogany is just off the hook. It seems fairly obvious based on this guitar that builders simply had better access to much better quality traditional tonewoods back then. With that said, it is really sad to think about what has happened with the world's wood supplies over the years and I applaud companies like Taylor for continually exploring other options these days.
I would note that I do prefer the look of a nitrocellulose lacquer finish over the UV-cured polyester finish that Taylor had just started to use back in the mid-90's. But the finish on my Taylor is very durable and easy to keep clean which is nice as I tend to leave the 510 hanging up on the wall in the warmer months when the heater isn't running and it gets a fair amount of attention. It certainly doesn't seem to have any negative impact on the guitar's tone. I also really liked the hardshell case that Taylor themselves constructed for the guitar, it's really quite spectacular. The fact that the Taylor was darn near mint when I bought it and that I managed to pick the guitar w/case up for under a grand was just the icing on the cake.
To wrap this up I would note that I really like the way the Engelmann spruce sounds combined with the mahogany. This Engelmann top has a surprisingly high amount of headroom to give yet is incredibly responsive even when played softly with bare fingertips and tends to warm things up a bit compared to the other Taylor guitars I had tried. I have owned a lot of great acoustic guitars over the years including those from Collings, Gibson, Goodall, Martin, and Webber. I do still own other guitars besides the Taylor, but I remain glad that I thought to give the 510 a chance on the day I discovered it. In my experience it is always best to judge each and every guitar on it's own, regardless of how many others, even those of the exact same model, that you might have tried beforehand.

Hopefully you used the same gauge strings. It would have been helpful to have heard both guitars being strummed. Your guitar sounds great.
I had the opportunity to try a new 914CE compared to a new Collings OM2. For me, and for the others in the room, the Collings was the better sounding of the two. Then there was the $19,000 Santa Cruz that was really impressive. Whether it was worth $14,000 more than the other two, I can't say. I did take the Collings home, no regrets at all.
Thanks for taking the time. I enjoyed your playing.

Well done as always Chris. To my ears, your 2000 sounded warmer than the new one. I think it takes a few years to break-in an acoustic. I appreciate that you used your personal instrument in the comparison. With that said, I'd like to see a comparison of say 314's of different vintage (old V new) as most of us lugs are more likely to have a 200, 300, or 400 series guitars. I could never afford a 900 series. Thanks!

I need to bring my 2005 315 into a shop and compare it's sound to the new 315CEs. They don't make a 315 without a cutaway anymore, sadly. Mine is my old friend, almost never gets to hide in her case unless she is travelling. Purchased new in 2006 by me, by my side ever since. Was on layaway by someone that did not pick it up, set up and maintained by a luthier that has been a Taylor dealer since nearly the beginning, knows his stuff.

Great comparison. I just bought a used 2002 414ce two months ago… tried a Koa K24 and a used 912ce, plus some new Furch’s and other guitars…. The sound of the 414 was so much better. Lesson…. Don’t decide just on the model #. Go with what you hear, and decide based on what style of music you play.

Not surprised how warm and wonderful your 20 year old 914C sounds- especially with you playing it- but was pleasantly surprised at how legit the new 914ce sounds right out of the box. Very different, but great in its own right. More definition and edge, but still excellent, not thin. In 20 years it will be a gem, as it has a good start. I still like the koa 224kce for its warmth and playable neck, and it is a monster compared to other new guitars at that price point. The 914 ce sounds like a winner if it is in someone's budget. Or their spouse's.. and I would keep the tuners, but that's just me.

Planning to install an LR Baggs sl pickup. Based on what commented that is the best choice for an acoustic guitar.

Interesting comparison. However, I believe you stated that even though they are the same Make and model with the exception of the electronics it's kinda like comparing apples and applesauce. Now for the reason I am commenting. I own three guitars and two of them are Taylors. I have been thinking about trading or selling one of the Taylors for a different guitar??? My thinking is to have different guitars to play on to keep things interesting and varied. Although, the two Taylors are quite different. I am wondering what your idea is on if I buy another guitar by a completely different maker would be different enough to justify giving up one of the Taylors for. I am considering selling or trading a 2008 Taylor GS6e for a 2019 Martin D28 HD.
