When it comes to old school punk I think the razor was more symbolic of cocaine use than self harm
I would expect MGK to glorify self harm rather than cocaine, and if it were about cocaine he wouldn't have to pretend it's something else.
My first reaction was “who would actually unironically purchase this?”. I will be very surprised to see how it actually does.

I don't see why everyone is making a fuss about it. Then again, I'm old enough to remember the '80s, when weird guitars were commonplace. It's no more outrageous than George Lynch's skull and bones guitar(made by ESP) or Kane Roberts' machine gun guitar and certainly no more ridiculous than the Gumby and fighter jet shaped guitars that I remember seeing in a Guitar Player magazine article. I'm not a fan of MGK or this particular design, but it is nice to see a bit of whimsy come back into guitar designs.
I'ved owned half a dozen BC Rich Warlocks over the years plus a few other strange shaped guitars. Nothing as strange as a razor blade guitar but I'm with you on this one. Nothing to see here. All I thought when I seen it was that's one idea that I haven't seen a BC RIch or ESP in before lol.
Not to mention, Bring Me The Horizon has shirts with razerblades and blood on them, but nobody has said a single word about that.
I like MGK as a musician, don't care for his drama or this guitar (his other ones are great) but I just wish people made sense haha

$1500 is insanely expensive for a gimmicky guitar like this because you can get some really guitars for that

my first reaction was "if this was made by judas priest and had "british steel" on the side of it, it would be a little bit less controversial"
That album is the first thing I thought of when I heard of the controversy, people don't get offended by British steel, I get why people could see it that way but I didn't think of self harm when I saw the guitar at all, I just thought it was a silly gimmick and was kinda fun
I said this on a different video about this subject. But if Schecter made an all aluminum guitar (with possibly an aluminum neck) that has the body shape of, say their Hellraiser model, I think it would look really cool. That's just my opinion, but aluminum guitars are a very rare sight, and they have the interesting side effect of really bringing out natural harmonics, which would be really cool for a major guitar brand to try making.
That would be cool, I think the problem comes in manufacturing something like that though. It's a drastic change in equipment, knowledge, materials, etc. and most of them don't want to risk that kind of investment. There are a few smaller companies that offer semi tribute models to the one kurt cobain used on in utero, but they're insanely expensive.

Well I think Schecter has succeeded in creating the 'Edgiest' guitar possible. Looks super cheesy to me but I'm sure there's a few teens out there dressed head to toe in black that'll love it.
If this was a thing during the early 00s emo era they would've flown off the shelves
Idk if it was cheaper I could see it. However not many teens can afford 1500 for a guitar, and not many parents are willing to spend that in today's economy.
Mgk said shaving relaxes him. So much he had the guitar made. I remembered in the late 80's Michael Angelo Batio had his aircraft aluminum Rocket guitar.

It's definitely too edgy for me, but it's also not offensive at all imo. I just think it's crazy to waste a signature opportunity on something so gimmicky and tacky. No one should really mind the price considering how many great alternatives there are. Plus anyone that buys it deserves the goofy tax

I shave with a razor that uses blades that look like this. I remember growing up and watching my dad shave with the "old" style razor. It shaves so much closer and it's a lot cheaper than buying replacement cartridges.
Yeah, it's outrageous, But wasn't rock built on the back of "outrageousness"? The fact that some people are outraged means that it's doing its job. I personally love that it exists. It gives me hope for the future of loud, obnoxious, fun music. I'm pretty reserved in my musical style and all of my guitars have a pretty buttoned up look, but it's not really about everything that I encounter being forced to conform with my tastes, right?

People should spend more time writing music and playing Guitar versus getting upset about a guitar. But then again people think buying new gear will make them better at guitar? 😂 who knows but who cares
It's a guitar from an artist. You can like it or not. You can say what it implies to you. It's a piece of art, so it's an open invitation to have your own thoughts about. MGK spoke about it onstage saying it was a nod to one of his songs called "Razorblade". Guitar players on the internet went BALISTIC & used it as an opportunity to dump on MGK. I think, as a guitar player, guitarists need to remove their head from their butt & realize that SOOO many non-musicians or just the bulk of society wont care. I think it's a cool/original guitar shape. I'm not a fan or hater of MGK, I'm also not his target demographic other than being a guitar player. He's done well for himself & I applaud that. I don't like seeing people that have done well for themselves be a target for hate when they do something that really isn't hurting or helping anyone. He created a guitar, he did not say you have to buy it, the backlash is REDONKULOUS. People might as well lose their shit over a commercial for mustard. I'd buy the guitar just to cause un-needed horror & I'd laugh my ass off.

I think this is a fun new look and it’s funny how many people need to take their ibuprofen for their backs. But this is honestly a great take on a Les Paul jr. I think it rules. A block of wood with a neck bolted to it and a crunchy bridge pickup; rock and roll in its purest form. In the right hands this thing will scream.

I find that people go straight to self harm from just a razor is the most disturbing thing! Well, that and that Machine Guy actually thinks he’s punk! Razors, swords, knives, and guns were all over album covers in the past!!
It's actually not awful. If, you can get passed that shape which forces you to always stand while playing. Maybe some people will like the cosmetic looks so much they're willing to do that. Other than that, its a decent guitar that is some what over priced. Schecter may be a little guilty of price gauging MGK fans. But, its not a bad guitar.

I could see Bo Diddley playing this, Paul Stanley had a broken mirror finish, Gene Simmons had the axe with blood on the blade and Kane Roberts had a missile launching machine gun guitar, I don't get the problem, other than the name, and people desperately looking for something to offend them, if you like it get it, if you don't then don't.

Aside from shaving, razor blades are also very useful for sharpening charcoal and other kinds of pencils which are used for drawing. Maybe that's what MGK was going for?

Regardless of the shape, I just don’t know why they even bothered adding the bottom five frets if you can’t even play them lol. Might as well make it fretless if you can’t even play them and save on frets.

Personally it wouldn't be my first choice of guitar but I can see how the edginess and cheesiness of it kind of gives it a sort of appeal though. I get the roasts but I'm not so sure about people seriously hating on it. It's a bit ridiculous but that's probably the point to draw attention.

I hate the razor blade, but I prefer the more traditional guitar body shapes. I’ve never liked the Flying V and even Pointy Super Strats are already pushing it for me, but at least the more aggressive cutaways can provide better access to high frets. The razor blade doesn’t even offer that.

Probably looked up names of most popular guitar models, saw Dimebag had one called the Razorback and thought "I can do that".
Desr Tyler...sometimes makes me sad see the scar in your face...i got the same ages ago and find a solution...buy a plant of aloe vera which is from cactus family..get the green part of the plant..not the race and put in a grinder until you get a soft cream and get inside a flask ...applying twice a day and in the night cover with a bend before sleep...in 3 month you will see only a tiny tiny line...hope you appreciate Alex

Omg razor blades like that used to be used in razors to shave with…. The blade was replaceable but the main body was kept as like many things years ago better for the environment rather than modern plastic razors. My point being this shape razor blade is still iconic with shaving back in the 60s/70s etc. nothing to do with self harm or any other grim topic…..

Like you say, there have been a lot of strange signature models over the years. Personally, I have more of a problem with the “artist” than the guitar itself 🙈
I think this is more about the context of it. The genre of MGK has been known to include (Stereotypical) self harming people. (Again, stereotype) whereas somebody like dime bag (RIP) wore it because he liked Priest. not taking sides, just something to think art.
Context is stupid. He thinks razor blades are cool. Dime though razor blades were cool. Who cares why?
