This is why we prep, not because of SHTF, it's the everyday things like a major repair, illness, lower than expected income, or someone needs some food in their house and you can help them. I love going down to my overflow shelf and see I could make all sorts of meals and not need to go to the store, when March 2020 hit we didn't leave the house for 6 weeks and then only for milk, bread, eggs, fresh fruit, and veggies. I now have a stock of bread flour, yeast, and dry milk to make our own bread with my old bread machine, nut milk has an incredible shelf life and I'm headed to DT to pick up shelf-stable milk.

This is goals. I feel a family of 7 for just over 5 months just from my storage at the beginning of the panic. I chose not to even try to buy any staples for 3 months because others needed them and I had some. I finally almost filled my stand up freezer again, and a kid left the door open so now I'm back to square one. We're struggling with cut hours and increased prices, but if I keep working the sales, it will build.

We have 2 other freezers connected to fridges that have all their essentials in them. My deep freezer is for my bulk meats and veggies and freezer meals… so there’s no need for the kids to go digging in it! So for my anxiety I just keep it latched and locked to protect it 😂

I took a few hours one day and looked at and marked the " use by date " of every can of veggies I have [ which is alot ]. I ended up with four areas of vegetables. A bookcase filled with current 2023 dates and in alphabetical order, 3 shelves in an armoire two for 2024 dates and one fo 2025. And, on top of the bookcase a box labeled " use first" items. This includes veggies that do not have the date clearly written or which are close to expiring. This system seems to work for me

Red Lentil Recipe: RL and Sweet Potato Dahl - fry onion, some garlic, add carrot, celery, sweet pot, fry off. toast some cumin, coriander seed, add with a cinnamon stick, some cardamom pods if you have, add red lentils, tomato paste and overtop with veg stock. Once the veg + lentils are soft add a tin of rinsed kidney beans, serve with brown rice and yoghurt. (we add frozen spinach to our brown rice for a green veg). Not a spicy curry, just an aromatic one, and probably not at all authentically Indian (with apologies to the world's best cuisine) but very tasty - and a two pot dinner! It's also very forgiving with quantities - you can be completely loosey-goosey about it and it will almost always turn out right. We tend to use 2 small onions, 4 garlic cloves, 2 med carrot, 2-3 stalks of celery, 1 large sweet pot, 2tsp each spice, 1 cinnamon stick, 1 cup red lentils. Feeds about 6 servings, and is even better next day or frozen and defrosted.

Place them perpendicular to one wall and even add a couple more shelving units to make an outside wall to the area. I think I would also use 2x4s and plywood to build an L-shaped wall to semi enclose the pantry area. To supplement lighting, use regular clip on lights on extension cords.

I was talking to some young people on tight budgets that wanted to start a food pantry and stockpile. I told them that how I basically started, when I shopped, I replaced what I used from my pantry that week and then I tried to buy as nonparishable items as I could afford. It may even just be one at a time, but that was the beginning of the stockpile. When you get home, but that item or items in a certain place so you were not tempted to used them. Then when you went shopping again, do the same thing. Replace what you had used and add as many things as you could afford and add it to your stockpile. Eventually, you would see big results and if times get rough you had something to fall back on!!!!!! This really worked for my husband and me!!!!!!

I like using canning jars to store my dried beans, popcorn, grains and oatmeal, etc. I have a vacuum sealer that has the jar lid attachment and it works great for ceiling the jars. You can often reuse the lids and it is easy to tell if it did not seal or if the seal doesn't last. I feel like dry goods will last even longer if they are sealed up. Things like split peas I will put in a pint jar, but things that I use in bigger quantities like oats I will put in 2 quart- size jars. There are some things I buy in bulk: Salt - get the 25lbs bag at Costco or another big box store. It's just a few bucks, salt doesn't go bad and when push comes to shove and i.e. you deal with a disaster and power is out for potentially months, if you have a ton of salt you can salt whatever is in your freezer and not lose it. So in my house - I always have at least 25lbs of salt, more likely 50lbs.
Same goes for different flours (I bake bread on a weekly basis) and some canned things like tomatoes. I probably have 30lbs of rice, about 200 lbs of different flours and at least 80 jars of tomatoes from last year (plus what's growing right now). I don't like to freeze a lot - it depends on power and where I live we have wildfires and in summer power goes out quite frequently, so dried things and things in jars/cans it is.
Target sells 100% Pumpkin right now for $1.79 the large can - not sure that's everywhere but it's what I got just a few days ago. Guess I'm going to get a few more because it's going to be expensive in 2 months. This is the season for it.
