In this video I want to show you how a natural pond that I built has developed so far. Today, priority is given to the fish stock, part of which are koi. I already made several videos about the pond, which can be found on my channel or by clicking on these links. The pond was built without a liner. Existing silt and clay as well as the use of rainwater ensure that the pond does not dry out. The pond as it is now was build 3 years ago. Since then many different plants and species have settled without doing much to it. Fish were put in after about 1.5 years, so the ecosystem was previously able to build up sufficiently and form a bio-sludge. So a few koi are living in this pond for 1.5 years now. There are no filters, pumps or ventilations used and I just wanted to show you how the koi are doing. With an estimated visibility of about 40 cm which 1,3 feet, the water of course is not as clear as in a conventional koi pond, so the animals are not always visible. However, this has a positive effect on the welfare of these animals. Their colors have improved significantly, after I had bought the koi out of a small conventional pond. In more turbid water, the koi are able to hide and avoid stress that way, which again can have a positive effect on their health. Now I can't give any medical prove since the animals have never been caught and examined, but no disease symptoms are noticed so far. The koi like to eat the countless water fleas and organisms cavorting in the pond water. This protein food contributes to a good growth of the fish. According to koi experts it is much better for the koi then dry pellet food. When I got the koi they were about 7 years old and haven't grown the last years the pre owner had them. The rather small size of the fish of about 40 cm (1,3 feet) was probably due to the small size of the pond. Since I put the koi in their new natural environment I was able to notice a significant increase in growth. So now some are more than 50cm, 1,7 feet long. The many microorganisms also take sufficient care about the biological water purification and decomposition of the fish waste. From time to time I feed the koi with pellet food. It took a while before they accepted the food, even though they were used to it from your previous environment. They seemed to be scared by their new big pond, but now however they got used to it. The different water and the switch from about 5 to about 400 cubic meters of pond volume of course was a major change for the animals. Now they got used to it and obviously enjoy their generous home as well as the existing aquatic plants. They like seeking for edible between the plants or relax under the lily pads. They also like to search through the ground in the shallow water areas so I had general concerns that the water is becoming all turbid. But however, I must say that the water is more clearer with each passing year. A small population of fish which doesn't overfill the pond enables the ecosystem to work well. In the future I would like to catch out all other fish like gold-orfes and tenches that have been put in so far and replace them with koi. As a landscaper I am interested in this project and I would like to know if these fish survive permanently and healthy without filters. Without the need for electricity, UV clarification, ozone systems and costly maintenance work, this big pond can be operated environmentally friendly and almost for free. My conclusions about this alternative pond don't mean to offend the conventional koi keeping, I just like sharing my observations and experiences with others. Changes or new features for this pond will gladly be caught on video and published on my channel. In addition to videos of the construction and maintenance of this pond there are more videos about gardening and landscaping topics on my channel. Thank you for your interest, I would be glad about comments in the form of hints, questions or tips. Thanks for watching.

We purchased a home about 6 months ago with a 1400ish square foot pond. The first fish we stocked were three koi and a pond of minnows. I enjoy that your videos are highly relatable.

In japan many traditional koi ponds are designed to be fed from natural springs, with continuous water flow in and out. some koi enclosures are even built in shallow canals with a moderate current. I've noticed many of these ponds are designed very shallow compared to large, "naturalistic" American ponds. An interesting contrast in design and style.

I have a 1,500,000 gallon natural pond. I have put about 40 or 50 koi in it over the last three years.
I feed them pellets in the spring, summer and fall ( I live in CT). So far, they have done extremely
well and are very happy, blending in with the other wildlife in the pond. They winter very well and
are also reproducing. They will eat lettuce, watermelon and other vegetables in addition to pellets.
If I go away, they feed on the natural food in the pond.
The one problem is the birds that pray on them. I let my dog chase the birds away, but other then
that there’s not a lot I can do to protect them. I have tested the water in the pond and it is very clean
and pure, thanks to the natural balance of plants and other animals that live in the water.
It gives me great joy to see these fish every day and I know each one by color and markings.
I also have no filters, pumps or maintenance systems, except an aerator to bring up oxygen.
I feel lucky to have these fish and recommend anyone with a natural pond to test the water
do some research and start with a few fish to see what happens, if they have an interest
    in this hobby.

Denise Henkind Try setting g out bird decoys or predator decoys. We put a blue heron on the edge of our pond because there’s a lot herons here and they are very territorial.

How do they do in the winter. I jus started a outdoor pond 125 gal for now. I have a baby koi and sum minnows as well as a few goldfish. I have a few plants planning on getting more. And I’m going to buy sum bottom feeders and stuff to help keep the pond clean

I agree with you Koi grow better in a natural pond. My friend built a natural pond just digging up and natural ground water supply. I was amazed how fast his koi grew compared to my koi in my backyard pond with liner and pump system.
    Anyways koi are great!!

If you add more plants around the border of the pond I think it will help improve visibility of fish, I only use plants as my filter, but still use a pump to send water through the plants roots as a bog filter, great pond you have there!

koi do much better in a natural pond, they can eat when they like, and can adapt immunities to all kinds of ailments. people that spend $1000s and $1000 on filters and heaters with uv and all that rubbish are mugs in my opinion! koi shops are rubbing their hands together when they see them coming. an average koi pond in a garden needs a couple hundred spent on it at most. My 2000 gallon pond is ten years old, I've cleaned out the muck once, the water goes murky every year. I made a filter for $50 and the pump/fountain cost $150, plus some plants to help filtration. my water is perfect and all my fish are in perfect condition. when people see all this elaborate stuff they are told they have to get it puts them off, and just fills them with disappointment because they now think it will cost a fortune! sitting by the pond watching the fish do their thing is meant to be enjoyable and relaxing not a chore!
there are three big lakes near where I live, the smallest is 1.5 acres, there are dozens of big koi in them all and lots of fry. the biggest weighs 19 lbs. they love living in the wild.

Here is how I see it... Kois in artificial (plastic, concrete, metal, tarpaulin, etc.) ponds need "artificial" oxygen supply in their water hence the need for pumps and filtration system. Kois in big natural ponds like the one in this video, doesn't need those equipment because nature does it all for the fishes - plants, insects, mud, wind, etc. balances everything for the fishes health.

I don’t have any substantial land to work with. So I make due. My koi are getting bigger & becoming friendly. I love them. They were inside last winter. Growing so fast this summer. I live in rural area in southeast asia. Abandoned-ish murky ponds like this r just a nightmare . Huge pythons love to live in them. If you release any fish , monitor lizards as big as alligators and giant otters family will come for a feast unless we watch over them 24/7. Lets not forget predatory birds that feed on fish fry .
In conclusion, the idea of having kois roam freely & thrive in natural ponds are just not possible lol.

The classical koi pond is mass animal husbandry what is ok but for this koi ponds have massive filters that contains around 10% of the actual pond. Your pond looks very nice but you miss the actual point of koi keeping what is not bad at all but Kois do better in bigger numbers and and let say you pond keeps 16000 Gallons and you would keep 15 to 20 adult koi between 2.5 to 3.5 feet what are regular sizes for adult animals so that you have to feed around a pound of food per day. Without propper filtration, oxidation, airiration and circulation a pond like yours would fail in a couple of weeks because it could not handle the stocking.

    • @billforigno
      @billforigno 6 років тому

That's my general understanding of how all the "natural" pond or aquarium methods succeed; very low fish stocking to water volume, or huge water changes to keep up with all the decaying organic matter. In point of fact, animals like these survive in nature because of the relative abundance of water to lifeforms they support (i.e. _very_ low stocking), and this attribute can contradict the objective shared by many fish keepers; to house an abundance of life in a relatively very small _and_ clear water volume. That means more nutrients per volume than any "healthy" natural water body, and a greater need for human intervention via filtration methods to export those nutrients.
