My son and I took up the mandolin last week and I've been surfing youtube for tutorials as neither of us have ever strummed a chord on a mandolin before. It is quite apparent that your tutorials fits our needs the best. Very direct and simply taught. Neither of us have any musical teachings in our background so playing by ear is the way to go for us. Thank you for such a large selection of classic tunes. I grew up listening to my grandpa play these on his fiddle. Makes for good learning and good memories. :)

Highly recommended! These lessons almost always teach the better versions of traditional tunes for beginners so that they learn 'em right. The slow versions are very good if you're trying to do a harmony part. Well worth donating just ten or twenty dollars to make the work worth their while.

Would love to see an update of this lesson. Your newer teaching methodology is a lot clearer I find. Thank you, you're a treasure

These lessons are great. Best mando lessons on Utube. Simple clear and gets right to the point. Just found them after picking up my mandolins after a while. I like that you don't waste a lot of dead time talking about nothing and over explaining. You just start showing how to do it.

Baron, think you are absolutely right about planting. Think most players who plant with fingers lose speed and one of my big faults (one of many)is planting with my wrest and tend to dampen the strings. Continue to practice to correct that. Thanks

I'm practicing this with my metronome, starting at 65 bpm. What is the "common" metronome speed for this song? I know it's certainly faster than where I'm starting out! Thanks.

Generally playing for a contra dance somewhere around 115 is where you will want to be, but if i I am playing for myself or with friends and not for a dance, I tend to play tunes slower, so wherever it feels exciting and isn't going to do any damage. Good question, thanks for asking!
