I'm sure there was a few scratches. Looks like Brad got 'em. Just be aware of the same on-air gremlins we all face in this wireless world we now live in. These amps are giant receivers/amplifiers to all that stray RF.
I'm an amateur radio operator (as well as a musician) and we're constantly fighting stray RF getting into our transmitting and moreso, our receiving signals. It can drive you crazy. Neon lights, dimmers, cheap switching power supplies, cellphones, bad connections on power poles, fluorescent lighting, wireless kw meters, it never ends.
Sweet sounding amp! Very versatile but it really cooks when you push it. Nice job!
Man that does sound great. I am about to start building a Bassman from scratch and might have to consider your mods you did to this one.

Nice example of standing behind your work, Brad! I loved the bit where you say "Its not perfect, but better than it was'' and a godlyTone screams from this little Fender head. I'll be honest, i don't play hardly enough but if i wanted to get inspired (yes, some bar gigs in the past), THIS tone would be what i would look for. CT, pedals and such don't seem like they'd nail this. Sorta a Leslie/Schenker thing. All i'd need!! Killer work!!!!

When working with any kind of glue, I like to work on top of wax paper. Glue won't stick to it.
I thought of that after the fact. Does that count?

good 'un , I started using the wax paper during my radio control aircraft building days. Super glue didn't stick to it and neither would epoxy. I've used parchment as well though.
Also, a putty knife, old butter knife, etc. instead of finger, maybe? Not being sarcastic. Love the channel.
Count? Yes, start with the 1 on that burnt finger...SFDR is still working great, btw.
I bought a 1969 bandmaster chassis without transformers and Dukane 1U460 transformers in it. Was having trouble of oscillation. I had to turn it down to stop it . I saw a video of a tech talking about oscillation happens in those 68s and 69s. He said you have to take all the pots, jacks and switches out and pull the brass ground plate back gently and scrub it clean with a piece of scotch bright. Mine was black with tarnish and fixed it. Those Dukane transformers work great.. They use a 5U4 rectifier and has a negative bias supply.
My God Brad, only because I have done similar things many times, I couldn't stop myself from cracking up at the "lack of an implement" portion of the video!! I was fearing the output transformer was bad, as they can produce the rustling sounds heard as well.

Yep . I regularly make mistakes , miss stuff and mess up . I'm kind of OCD too , so don't like it when it happens . But there we go . So good to see you have similar experiences . Fault finding is hardly ever straightforward . .
I used work at a vintage guitar and amp store this is by far one of my favorite amps I've ever played through, if I ever had the budget id use one with the mods you did for clean and crunch sounds
Thanks for the tip about getting the straps off the amp. My biggest issue is getting the screws on the back when reassembling the unit.
Good result , that amp looks and sounds way better in fact sounds great , and presumably the clean channel provides a solid jazz option. I guess the customer is very pleased with the amp!

dude, I am sorry but your painful hot glue FU was hilarious...LOL love that you don't edit out your screw ups I would have done the same thing with the hot glue...or 3m spray adhesive...it would have permanently adhered to the desktop. Of corse I was just waiting for you to hit your fonger with the hammer....

Thanks Brad. Now I know the proper spelling of Gitalijust. Mr. McKnight gave us the proper pronunciation a while back. Just a friendly suggestion Super 77 spray adhesive works great for such applications. it's a little smellier and takes a bit longer to tack up (not necessarily a bad thing). Much kinder to the fingers.
Good thing you reused those staples for the grill cloth, that's where most of the tone lies.

You should look at getting a capacitor tester like a Heathkit IT-28 or IT-11. Cap testers are looking for leakage current, not voltage. The voltmeter method is ok, but it will lie to you and make you believe bad caps are good and some good caps may be bad. Or, build one of Mr. Calrson’s new low voltage cap testers... those things are the bee’s knees. I bet a cap tester would have condemned those old blue caps. I enjoy your videos and thanks for taking the time to do them!
I used to help out with a band where the lead guitarist used one of these amps. Ah the memories...
I'm sorry Brad but when you burnt your finger on that hot glue and vented those obscenities I laughed and laughed. Not at your expense mind you but the situation itself you stuck your finger in the exact spot that you put that HOT glue.
Ummm....Here's my "know it all comment"...Leave a little extra grille cloth next time? You can always trim it off after the trim goes on. :) Anyway..great results!

Maybe your soldering iron is pulsing to keep the tip at a precise temperature and that may be what you are hearing fantastic video by the way

I don't trust that switch. It took too much effort to clean up. I'd be afraid it would oxidize again in a few days/weeks.

Kudos for that mod, Brad! The tone reminds me of a 1964 Vox Imperial Guardsman. It would have that nasal tinged break-up that was so sweet! Not a bad job on the front grill. I normally use 3M contact adhesive. It tacks and sets immediately. That way you can stretch the grille cloth taught. I then apply upholstery staples for sharp corners. But the caveat is that you have to be exact on the fit or suffer a cemented crooked grille. I don't blame you for not wanting to send it back. But customers tend to frown on that kind of thing. Please pat yourself on the back! That was an expert use of profanity when you burnt your finger. I mean, you could teach a college level course on expletives. Nevertheless a great job on the corrective servicing. I hope you popped that blister. Enjoy the week.

I think your first attempt at the grill would worked if you had put wax paper on desktop as a anti-stick. It might not be a bad idea to use nitrile gloves when working with the hot glue - hopefully the glue wouldn't stick to them. The sticking is what really burns.

Had to rewind the bit when you put your finger in the glue...funny stuff..
keep some peppermint extract/essential oil around for burns like that... elevates the pain almost instantly and guarantee you will NOT have a blister the next day!!! it is natures miracle for burns and bee stings too
but the peppermint oil is something that should be in everyone's solder/craft box!!! it is amazing what it can do with burns!!!
DO NOT hot glue your fingers together!!! just get you a little bottle of peppermint oil extract and keep it with your hot glue gun or soldering iron and the next time you " ACCIDENTALLY " burn yourself you can use it and verify what is well documented but rarely know to happen... just my $0.02
Peppermint oil... Better keep a glass of cold water at hand. It cools the blob of hot glue on your finger instantly, so you can peel it off. Then, apply peppermint oil, if it is still painful.
Put you finger in ice right away,it will keep the blister from getting bigger.Your going to use a pick for a few days and let it heal up.👍Bet you touched a frying pan as a kid too.Lol,don't touch fire it hurts like hell.Have a good Sunday bud.That amp is sweet.🎸😂👍

I didn't even notice you'd stuck your finger in the glue. I thought the glue gun had toppled over onto something sensitive. I've had weld slag land on my sock and literally travel into my shoe. Nothing I could do but twitch and swear while it burned me and cooled down. The burns with no escape suck

Put ice or cold water till its numb. No scar. Why didn't you pull the top and bottom cloth towards you like the ends? It seemed easier. Live and learn I guess. Another great sounding amp and demo. I wish 90% of the demo guys would listen to you so they know how to demo an amp.

Nic Thomas Not for the aluminium, but for wrapping the fabric. Upholsterers use them and they'd go into the wood.
It might go through the ally, but not without distorting it.
When was the last time you visited an Upholsterer? The two I know use pneumatic and electric tools, which are not cheap! Brad's method is to repair, reuse and spend when absolutely necessary which he did.
An alternative would be double-sided adhesive tape
Quite recently, actually, Nic, and they use a mix of tools depending on the materials they are working on or the access they need to work in.
There isn't much difference between the cost of a manual or electric stapler these days, in any case. I recently bought an electric version of a manual one I have used for six or seven years and it was a couple of quid cheaper. The normal price is only a couple of pounds more. Even a pneumatic one can be had for well under £40 these days, though of course you'd need the compressor and hoses.
Anyway, I wasn't criticising Brad, but merely asking a question and then commented that he had mentioned just such a comment arising immediately after I had typed it. Based on this evidence, he would indeed have been better off with a simple manual stapler.

Well, hot glue is not the proper adhesive for that in the first place. 3M spray adhesive is the right thing to use just as you would applying tolex.
I have had similar interference to what you thought was from a cell phone, from an air traffic control radar sweeping my area periodically. Just a thought

I'm tellin ya that switchin to 1K screen resistors sterilizes the amp. Replacing with 470 5W ceramic is a better choice.
Observation question. A few weeks ago you had a Mesa amp that was crackling & rustling. You immediately checked the tubes. Did you check the tubes first on this amp? Video looks like you went right to wiring
Hot melt glue and hot vacuum tubes. Good thing staples finish the job........ I recall the hot day a friends custom car audio started sounding bad. Opening the doors, we found all the hot melt glue holding the crossovers together had melted. The amp does sound nice..Very much so👍

A good alternative to hot glue is Kwik Grip contact cement, it's great for re-attaching tolex to guitar amp cabs.

Hey Brad, I have a question, is it a common thing for a late 60s silverface Fenders to have a black cloth on the front? Because on mine at home there is a black one and it is not painted, looks like it came original like that but I know that's not true(probably). Soon I am going to shoot a video of it and rip it open to see what's it all about 'cause it seriously looks like it came from the factory, no sign of mods except the small ones I made so that really bothers me because it looks damaged and I want to replace it, is that a wise thing?

That's probably the best sounding amp you've ever laid your hands on.
There's this great invention maybe you've heard of it it's called contact cement, spray the face of the board let it get tacky and stick the cloth down to it that way the face is smooth and tight then let it sit for a bit then apply the brush on type contact cement to the edges and wrap the rest of the cloth around it.
I'd definitely do that with tolex.

Contact glue was uninvented?
When I see an old the amp like this that has rustling and cracking, my 1st go to is the plate load resistors for the pre amp section. That is usually the problem 60% of the time period they're usually 100 K resistors
.......may i suggest thumb tacks as a cheap and less pain in the ass alternative to the hot melt....
This amp does sound damn good. Brad, if you get a chance, would there be any way you could draw up a schematic to the changes you made? I've been wanting to build a hot rodded bassman from scratch for a little white now and I think this would be just the ticket.

wax paper on the desk is good for hot gluing.
You should have use spray-on contact cement for securing the grill cloth. Just Sayin'
When I was about 12 I was in the garage with my Grandfather, he was hot gluing something back together. I noticed a bead of glue about to drip and I decided to catch it. I'll never forget what my Grandpa said "how did that feel stupid?'
