    That was a pretty solid run-down of grills section off into reasonable price tiers. People are going to get ruffled over your suggestions, but it's impossible to name every reasonable grill in a price range without an 1 hr+ long video. Thanks for the time and effort that went into this!

    I absolutely love my weber smokey mountain. It does an awesome job holding temperature once it's going, and I get much better bark and smoke flavor on it than on a pellet smoker. It's more work than a pellet smoker, but I think it strikes a perfect balance for a beginner.

      My first smoker was an 18” WSM and it started my addiction and I still use it to this day. It’s not as fun as an offset but it definitely still has its place

    Old country gravity feed has become my favorite. After couple of doz cooks can dial it in perfectly each time. Great smoke favor and easy to clean. Great video Jeremy. Thanks for sharing.....

      Same here. I've been fighting off the allure of an offset smoker for over a decade with my 18" WSM. It is so easy to maintain temperature, size is great, easy to put off in the corner when not in use etc...

      Just curious with the Smokey Mountain: how long can you leave it between adding wood? And how long will it maintain temperatures if you don’t add fuel?

      @@fegguary2751 Hard to say with the wood. I usually keep a close eye on the smoker for the first four hours. Seems like that is the window to get smoke onto (into?) your food. I'm probably adding chunks of wood every two hours at most. As for maintaining temps, I've had the Weber easily hold a temp for 5-6 hours before I need to start opening the vents to maintain a temp. Using the Minion method, I have kept it going steady, by gradually opening up vents as fuel gets spent, for 12 or more hours.

      @@fegguary2751 the WSM runs on charcoal briquettes. On a 22.5" WSM with a standard ring, you can fit roughly 20 lbs of charcoal. During warmer months, using the Minion method, you easily can get 12--14 hours before having to add charcoal. I usually add 3--4 wood chunks at the beginning of the cook, which is plenty of smoke flavor for the way it cooks (choked off smoldering fire). You can get larger charcoal baskets and make modifications (better door; lid gasket) to make it more efficient, which will result in your being able to load it with charcoal and run it for 24 hours without reloading. I usually bring mine up to temp, close two vents down, leave the third vent open to the size of a pencil's diameter, top vent wide open, put a brisket on at around 10 p.m., and it will run at a steady temperature all night long. I don't worry about it a bit. I'm sure there is an incremental flavor improvement with an all-wood fire, or maybe more still. But for the ease of use and flavor of the barbecue I've achieved on this big box store cooker, I'm not all that interested in working that much harder at this point. YMMV

    One of your best review videos. Its like BBQ speed dating. I have had the Pit Barrel Cooker for about 7 years now and have turned out fantastic meals. It has its limitations and I prefer briskets on my pellet grill, but everything else I use the PBC. Not very many cookers can fit 8 racks of ribs at a time and is that efficient with fuel (1/4 bag kingsford & 2 chunks of hickory= 9 hours of steady smoke)

    I refurbish old Weber grills as a hobby. I have a couple propane ones from decades ago. One charcoal also. I've thought about getting the 22" WSM. I use to have an electric cabinet smoker, which produced fantastic smoked salmon. I gave it to my brother-in-law when I stopped eating meat for 7 yrs. Now I restarted in 2022. So now I'm looking for a good smoker again. Great video and channel!

    Hi Mate- just to add , with a few simple modification the WSM can be a all round smoker and grill, There so versatile and i use mine to cook low and slow, hot and fast and slow and sear.
    For people just starting out in to smoking meats they are a great way to get into smoking and grilling- there are HUGE amount of mods available for WSM to to tweak it to your own personal use

    I bought a Weber smokey mountain back in 2011 and i always made good food on it! In 2016 I bought a green mountain pellet smoker and I sold it two years later, it was junk that couldn't produce the flavor I wanted. I still have the Weber and it still works great 10 years later!

    Great video Jeremy, as always. Really enjoy your content! I have an 18.5” WSM that I enjoy very much; for anyone who’s wondering, they’re great! I’m curious if you’ve ever checked out the KBQ C-60 before. Seems like a very interesting evolution of the stick burner at a decent price point as well. If you haven’t, it would be a cool pit to consider testing someday; I’m certainly curious about it. Keep doin’ your thing man, love it!

    I know the quality of smoker is definitely proportional to the amount of work it takes to get the desired result but really with a little know how you can get great bbq from literally any fire in a metal box Lol! I love your videos and appreciate your insight and some of the experiments with different styles and techniques have definitely made an impact on my cooking! Keep up the great work and thanks for this channel!

    My weber kettle is honestly my work horse, I have a smoker but I tend to drift back to my weber.

      Once you get your thing down and it isn't too hard you don't want to mess with it. Or at least most people tend to be that way. I'm that way myself. Everything he said about cheap offset smokers is true and I know this because that's what I'm still using. I didn't know much about it when I bought it, I just saw what I thought was a good deal on a cool idea. For me it was a tricky learning curve but I got it down after a few battles. I felt a little better when I learned that much of the learning curve was due to the fact that cheap offsets are difficult. Now that I've tamed the beast and can get results that we're all happy with I don't want to change anything.

    I’ve love my OKJ Highland. Just had a bit of a learning curve. And as my first smoker, it’s fun to learn on, and nobody I cook for complains about the BBQ.
    When I get more space, I’ll get something with thicker metal. But until then, my Oklahoma Joe does great for a BBQ hobbyist like me

    After tons of consideration I had to end up with a weber kettle for now. Next years budget will have a nice offset or vertical such as a Humphreys. This video definitely pointed me in the direction of what I eventually want for sure. Who knows I may just go from old country bbq pits direct, i hear they crate and ship for free. Thanks for the video. Great help. Needed a grill/smoker for now

    Great job as usual on the info you provide. I researched for several months over the recent winter wanting to move away from a reliable gas "smoker" to true wood smoke. My budget and needs kept me well out of the custom bracket. I finally narrowed it down to the Oklahoma Joe Longhorn and the Old Country Brazos. Based largely upon your recommendation, I spent the extra bucks and got the OCB. After my first two cooks on it, I couldn't be happier. There was very little smoke leakage to begin with and the temp control is pretty easy to manage as long as you stay with it. I went with offset because I do enjoy the all day cook and being outside with the pit. Haven't worked my way up to a brisket yet but have done some very popular (with friends and family) ribs and pork butts. Thanks for your guidance!

    Good informative video. One point about pellet smokers that I have found after getting one, I do a lot more grilling/smoking than I used too. Main reason, as you said, it's easier.
    I made due with a $100 off-set Brinkman, that I got at Wal-mart, for 12 years. The wood box finally burnt out. As much as I enjoyed doing a slow cook during football season and stuff, I found that I differed to grilling more often than not just because I didn't have time to tend it. And it was always BBQ that I cooked, I didn't want to risk messing up a brisket or such, BBQ is easy.
    I finally tossed it late last year and started looking at Pellet grills. One of my concerns was that I would miss the "process" of tending the smoker. I got the Recteq RT-700 back in February and am absolutely loving it. I've made ribs, BBQ, Brisket, steak, burgers, wings, and chicken breasts on it. All have turned out great, in fact my wife and kids are requesting brisket about every weekend now.

    Thanks for the review of different types of smokers and what you should look for. I agree with you that an offset smoker is the very best in smoke favor. I have a Lg Green Egg which has done me great and for it size I would buy it again as it is fairly easy to use and once you learn how to use it, you get great smoke taste.

    Enjoyed the video and tips, thanks for sharing, excellent channel. One day I want to get a good quality off set smoker, I think that would be a lot of fun to learn how to use well. For now I use a Chargriller Acorn that I got from Lowes and that kamado style cooker is fan-tastic!. Cooks great food and I love the flexibility to be able to cook a brisket on Friday and burgers on Saturday.

    Excellent video! Five years ago I went from a water tank & a weber kettle to Texas Longhorn offset smoker. I wanted a gator pit but the price and turn around time was over a year, so in two months I got a semi custom offset for $2500 which included shipping from Uvalde Texas to Seattle, Wa. Best cooking machine I’ve ever owned..I want a Gator or Moburg trailer pit next once the dust settles.

    Lots of people like myself have been making award winning bbq on an Oklahoma Joe with a few basic mods. Total cost with mods is about 500 bucks but you've got a very capable smoker/grill. Haven't ruined a cook yet on it.

      Lol, been smoking meat for 10+years and never ruined a cook but started out with a Bradley before my WSM. WSM is pretty much as easy as my old electric with much more flavor.

      Ok Joe, wsm or the old country pecos is the way to go for under $500 if you want that authentic smoked food flavor. Did 8 years with a pellet grill. Sorry but the flavor just isnt there. It should be noted that the offsets are much more tedious, time consuming and a learning curve. But if you watch some of this guys videos (or many others) you can learn it in short order. And the results are as good as it gets.
      I disagree with the video on the OK Joe. I have had tons of good q from those. I suspect hes never used one. Also he should have mentioned the old country pecos, i own that one and its really good for the money.

      Beware of buying a hobbyist a major tool! All too often they have their own ideas and may not like whatever you buy them, no matter how good it is. It might be better to get them a gift certificate or a paid up debit card (which will work anywhere). That way they can get the smoker they want and much embarrassment is avoided.

    I'm one of those guys that has produced some pretty good bbq with a cheap offset, and I'll agree with everything you said about offset smokers. But, my new Rec Tec RT-590 pellet smoker produces tons of good smoke, and I'm also loving the ease of use.

    I got my Joe running pretty good now, that being said I've made a baffle plate, charcoal box and added a 90° pipe to the inside on the exhaust. Now I can turn my intake down to run in the 250 range or if I want to open up and do a hot and fast 350 it's no problem. But after playing with it and experimenting I'm planning my own build.

    Great video. One thing you didn't mention is electric smokers like Masterbuilt. It might not even stand close to anything else, but would definitely be good to hear for people that just trying to get into smoking.

      I'm fairly experienced when it comes to barbecue and I've moved to using a Masterbuilt electric smoker exclusively. It is just so darned easy that it causes me to use it much more frequently than I would anything else. And frankly, the taste difference is not noticed by most people unless you have meat from a proper smoker side-by-side with it (I live in Central Texas, and folks here are happy to give their unvarnished opinion on barbecue--especially brisket!).

    I started with a pitboss pellet smoker from walmart for about $250 on a fall sale about 4 years ago now. I fell in love with smoking using it. I have had lots of problems with my pit boss, I am on my second failed igniter but I it has been amazing. This past fall I picked up the PitBos Brunswick which is a box pellet smoker. I have only done a few cooks on it so far but I think the flavor is much better and it also has the cooking space that is amazing. I highly recommend trying one of the box style smokers if you are going for smoking.

I'm looking for a Kamado type smoker to add to my arsenal but the Kamado Joe and Big Green egg seem to be too expensive. What do you think about the Akorn or something like it?

    I have a WSM and I love it
    Wanted to get into bbq, didn’t have any experience and wanted something easy to use and it fit the bill. Next is to upgrade to an offset.

      I would bet that amounts to cleaning out the ashes and draining the tank on a huge offset. Done! Us backyard guys are into cleaning our expensive toys I dont think commercial guys so that much though. Just look at Jermeys 500 Gallon Fatstack, does it look like he deep cleans it?

    I have an under 500 Oklahoma Joe offset, however, I converted it to reverse flow. As it was temps were all over, no control. I moved the exhaust stack to fire box side of cooker, and welded in a baffle from firebox discharge to within inches of other side of cooking space. After that, I can easily maintain 200 to 250 temps with an actual blue flame fire. Cleaner smoke, better smoke, and less temp stress. I do have a pellet cooker also. Both make great food, but the process is different.

    I was using a charbroil patio grill. And it was just for grilling. I just recently tossed it to the side and bought a traeger pro 22. WHAT a difference. I been smoking spare ribs, full chickens. Talk about night and day diff.

    Ordered a Masterbuilt gravity fed that works like a pellet smoker. Just found out they existed a week ago and seems like a good upgrade to my Weber kettle I’ve been smoking on the past year. Using charcoal and wood but has an electric fan to hold temps. We will see how it goes!

    I'd love to see a video like this that talks about running costs. My CampChef pellet for example will cost around $40 for a bag of pellets (~20 hours of smoking @250F), whereas my ProQ uses about $5 of charcoal and >$5 of wood chunks for a 10+ hour cook, and the Komodo uses even less. Similarly offsets are cheap if you have a property with access to a lot of wood, but if you're buying the wood can end up pretty expensive to run. For that reason I'll use my bullet smoker for personal cooks and crack out the pellet for larger cooks (eg: 8kg brisket or a 6kg pork) simply because I can't justify $20 of fuel for $30 of meat.

    Mr. Mad Scientist, Thanks for the information on all the different cookers, I’ve been on the fence for about a year on which cookers to get, I’m not really into monitoring the fire all day or night, I just want good smoked flavor for backyard family and friends cookouts with minimal work. So I’m going with the Pitts and Spitts Maverick 1250 it’s within my budget and I think it will serve my needs.

    Great video ! I like the offset smokers the best . And the LANG BBQ is the best of the best there from Georgia they ship all over the word the owner is a great guy .the food comes out so much better than the offset smoker I had from Home Depot ( it was good to learn how to smoke meat with and to decide if I even wanted a smoker ) then I got the Lang in 2016 best smoker out there I can smoke meat all year round in Maine I’ve smoked brisket in 0 degrees in a snow storm many times no problem .

    As much as I'd love to get a Franklin Offset like Jeremy just got, the reality of my available space and frequency of use brings me back to the Weber Smokey Mountain.
    My wallet will be happier too! Even with all the upgrades that T-Roy recommends.

    This is the best over view that I have yet to see.
    I do love my Big Joe kamado for its versatility, low fuel consumption, and ease of control . My pellet smoker is easy to use but lacks smoke flavor for my taste. Both can cook with little tending.
    For my taste neither can match my weber kettle fitted with a Slow n Sear. It can be set up and left unattended for hours. I can get the real smoke flavor that I love. The problem is low capacity. If one is going to spend the time tend a fire to get awesome results, well you have the best IMO.

      @@zacharysilver3632 i got the 14" and have cooked alot of meat on it. Problems I have is you cant keep it hot enough for anything above 275 as I like to cook chicken at 325. A rack of ribs won't fit so I roll them or cut them in half.

    I have a weber smokey mountain and a GMG pellet, I cooked the same BBQ beans on both, could hardly taste the smoke flavor in the pellet, WSM tasted much better. I got rid of the GMG, it was a small one, and temps were not even, it would burn ribs on one end, and chew through pellets, I sold it, got a Lang 48 coming in 3-4 more weeks! I've perfected my method on the WSM, I highly recommend it with a BBQ guru, set it and forget it just like a pellet but with much better flavor. Also, get the next size up smoker whatever you choose, you'll be glad you did!

    I have consistently found that I can get a superb brisket result on a Komodo Kamado in about 8 hours. That's for a low and slow not a hot fast. 225-275 ish cook temp. I put smoke wood on top of the bed of lump, set the temp with the vents or a Guru, cook it indirect, wrap it in paper at the appropriate time and start probing for tender once it hits 200 internal. Somehow the airflow and heat radiation characteristics of the KK allow the brisket to become butter soft in a shorter time frame. Once you get your technique down for using the lump plus smoke wood, I would put a Kamado smoked brisket up for a blind taste test against a stick burning offset and feel very confident. Of course a VERY long rest aids in the end result. Many people have told me that my KK briskets are as good as any they have ever had, and these folks live and eat Q in central Texas! So a kamado can be a VERY effective tool for this, and it is super versatile for grilling, stewing baking, pizza, the list goes on.

    So, I will admit I am extremely surprise you recommend a pellet smoker in the low and high end range minus the offset. I would of thought the WSM for low $$$ and Kamado for high with the pellet being in the middle for the average Joe. I have a GMG Daniel Boone and a Kamado Joe Jr, but in the market for a higher end grill. Very good video overall and thank you for your input.

    I was considering a backwoods chubby, but now I'm thinking of getting the more affordable Weber Smokey Mountain 22. I also have a griddle, a camp chef pellet smoker, and a Weber kettle with Slow and Sear.
