So many cold cases are solved because someone finally looked at clues and tips that the cops decided to ignore in the initial investigation. It's so frustrating.
It happens a lot when cops zone in on one person who’s not the right person but they all refuse to acknowledge they maybe wrong. Think it’s a huge flaw in the system. Letting ones ego take over an investigation is asking for failure.
I agree. It's so frustrating when cops think that no one from their own can commit crimes or they want to close the case as fast as possible, because otherwise their 'statistics' suffer.
She was a LAPD officer. She was protected by them for years. Hence why these guys had to take her away from everyone to interview her. Her husband was also a LAPD officer
Geez it's been so long.I mean what's this all about? I met her but I never met her, we might have been at a party or I I've never seen her before.....I mean what year is it anyway?
Yeah you can hear where she realised she'd slipped up saying she'd been to his apartment and after that she had no choice but to go with it and tell them where it was too.
She also doesn't remember even the year his wife was murdered, but was absolutely sure that she was "on duty" (Their words, I believe. I think they meant she was on the force at the time?) at the time. Which is... Odd. Like, you don't even know what year it happened but can be sure that you were at a specific job at the time that you can't recall.
Cops: "How long were you guys dating?" Stephanie: "Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty..."
Cops: "Did you know Sherrie?" Stephanie: "Oh gee, In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth and the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. God saw the light, that it was good"
A true stalker thru and thru. Sherri told her dad that one night she was being followed by a person who was dressed like a man but had crazy looking eyes that looked right through her. If you look at some of the photos of Stepanies 👀 eyes then we can almost say for certain who that was.
She is legit freaking out! Can you imagine all years going by thinking you had gotten away with it and then have this happen. I’m surprised she didn’t stroke out!
Even though Observe is just doing research over body language... the murder was performed with a firearm being discharged through a rag. She knew what she was doing.
When she’s lying: “oh jeez! I don’t know - uh, hmm, jeez! it was so *long* ago, y’know? Pfft, I just don’t know!” But when she tells the truth: “No. No, I did not go to their wedding! No. I did not go.” The difference is so telling
"oh jeez! I don’t know uh, I mean I *could* have brutally murdered her, it was so long ago, y’know? Pfft, I just don’t know. I mean, I know when I moved in with my husband we bought pickles from the store on the 15 of August at 8:42pm but wow, it's just so hard to remember things like a murder y'know. It was like 3 million years ago!" She says as her eyebrows raise so high that they float off into orbit.
Not sure how she can be so clueless, after being a cop for that many yrs, "I know how this all works", she says at the end of the video...Ummm...🤣 Shoulda gotta lawyer 😩
Contrast that with the answer she IMMEDIATELY gave about where John lives and the inconsistency with her going back and forth on whether she really kept in touch with him over the years. She knows his address, but can't recall if they kept in contact... Right. She appears to have confounded herself wih the confusion tactic, whoops! She knew, she payed attention to him, quite clearly. That makes the instant recollection of the address a massive red flag, for a guy she just "dated a million years ago" (Not a non-verbal one, so not a focus for Logan, but of interest to her interrogators).
According to Stephanie it was a "casual" dating relationship..."it wasn't like we were girlfriend and boyfriend"...yet Stephanie knew all of his siblings; she knew his parents; she knew his Dad's profession; she knew the names of his friends; she knew what kind of car he drove back in college; however, she had no clue what his wife's (her competition) name was or whether she ever met her.
@@WinterRose-el6nn Yes but the friend would be able to recollect the wife. It’s telling she can’t. She’s distancing herself from the wife because she killed her.
That's why I can tell when people I know-ish pretend not to remember certain things; it's just their passive-aggressive way of trying to make a memory sound insignificant, and also implying that I got a lot of time on my hands to be able to remember said memory as if remembering things is a choice. 😂 It's true that sometimes a memory means more to one person than to the other, but killing someone? Unless you're a hitman that kills people with your eyes closed, there's no way you can forget someone you killed out of rage. Heck, we find ourselves remembering lyrics of songs we don't even like. 😂
Right... I have really unbelievably good memory recall; makes it really hard for people to lie to me because I WILL remember what’s already been said. 😂🤦🏻♀️
I just snorted ice cold water out my nose at this comment, and the pain in my sinuses is still worth reading it a half dozen more times so I can get a good, long laugh in.
If you watch this interrogation all the way through, it's actually hilarious. She can't answer a single question without going on a pointless tangent. She claims to remember nothing, while proceeding to reveal a ton of info with heavy detail, and makes a series of insane faces.
I've seen it. English isn't my first language. So all her ranting and talking but not answering the questions made me lose track. I had the feeling, I was missing the whole story because I never knew what she was talking about. It was really exhausting to watch for me. 🤦♀️

Yes, the JCS Criminal Psychology channel has a really interesting video on this case that shows the whole interrogation. You could tell she was guilty from the moment the questioning started. The interrogators were pretty great considering she didn’t even fully realize she was being interrogated regarding the murder until way later into the questioning and that’s just *cheffs kiss*

Can you _imagine_ the adrenaline that must have been flooding her body during this "interview"? Like holy shit, the panic she must have felt in that moment would've been unreal, to be secure after all that time in the knowledge (as far as she's concerned) that you got away with it, and then to have this sprung on you completely out of nowhere decades later, with no warning? Can't even imagine...
No s***! Its no wonder she didnt have a heart attack. You can practically see her breathing a mile a minute. For a second, her eyes look like they could pop right out of her head!
@@miknmas1301 I know, seriously! I don't envy her having to experience that, but....she had it coming. The dread she must've been feeling would've been all-consuming O.o
25:42 "Yeah, I know she got killed." This wording is really interesting to me. It implies blame through the way the sentence is structured on the victim, who was killed. Not "I know she was killed" or "I heard she was murdered" or something similar. "I know she got killed" similar to "she got herself killed." The sentence insinuates that she got something, in this case, she got death, or brought death to herself presumably through an action of her own. It is the kind of wording seen most often in those who blame the victim in some way for what happened to them, for example: "She drank a lot at the party and got raped" which implies blame on this hypothetical character for drinking and "getting raped" through its structure. Because Lazarus was the one who murdered this woman, this word choice stood out to me powerfully as revealing a momentary possible glimpse into how she viewed the murder, veiled of course behind her trying to maintain the lie of forgetting almost everything about this couple. I believe that Lazarus was trying to phrase it this way to create distance: the victim "got killed" by someone unknown, who cannot ever be known, someone who isn't Lazarus. But in reality, the fact that she phrased it this way when talking about the murder victim reveals more about her attitude towards the murder and the victim than she realized. She also repeats this phrase later on.
I think something really interesting is for Logan to watch an interrogation without knowing the results of the case. Then by the end, reveal what he really thinks about the suspect, if involved or not. Even if he’s completely wrong, I think it would still be interesting.
Crazy how her last name Lazarus kind of means "coming back" as in the Lazarus effect, guess her past came back to haunt her. So glad this psychopath got caught and hope she rots in prison. RIP Sherri
The channel JCS Criminal Psychology does fantastic videos on criminals and body language as well. They did one on Steph Lazarus and it's very interesting. You should check the channel out if you like stuff like Observe.
I love how she’s constantly asking “what’s this about??” and the cops just don’t answer her. it comes up over and over and they just ignore her every time 😂

I think she actually has hyperthyroidism causing the appearance of her eyes (exophthalmos) in some photos and not others, because she also has a goitre in some photos. It is true that some psychopaths have eyes that seem to protrude and/or stare wider than usual and doctors don't know why yet, but there are multiple other medical conditions that cause extreme protruding eyes even much worse than hers, and most people suffering from them aren't psychopaths.

No, initially Sherri was able to get Stephanie in a headlock from behind- this is when SL bit her on the arm, causing Sherri to release her at which point she overpowered her

what sends me is that her whole argument at the top of the interrogation is "how the hell am i supposed to remember this stuff it was a thousand years ago" and then proceeds to recall her entire romantic, professional and educational background
I also would have loved to see the cops ask more freebie questions to see her tell the truth like “got any cats?” “What is your favorite food?” Just to see if she would completely drop the facade or still play clueless!

JCS - Criminal Psychology made a video about her interrogation and it was amazing. I can't wait to see what you will say about her :) Love your videos.
She was so sloppy during the attack that other cops had to have purposely covered it up. She only stole their marriage certificate and the car that her ex gave Sherri. Those are obvious signs of jealousy. The palm print, saliva, etc. Plus a lot of the evidence went "missing". There's no doubt in my mind that her coworkers knew and helped cover it up
Very sad but so true. You already know they know smh! People need to understand that #karma can hit their children or their children’s children etc or so on…
If you’re trying to get away with an outrageous lie (and I’m an outrageous liar) you need to admit to the truth as much as you can without incriminating yourself. For example, Stephanie gained absolutely nothing by pretending she hardly remembered John, couldn’t recall the name of his wife, where the wife worked, etc. If you’d dated someone for several years, and later the spouse was murdered, AND you were a police officer working in the division that investigated the crime, how could you possibly not remember? Wouldn’t you be like “Oh yes, the Sherri Rasmussen murder case!”? But of course Steph’s real mistake was talking to her fellow cops in the first place; she should have said “I remember that case, but unfortunately I don’t have any helpful information about it” (then left the room and, ideally, the country).
I SO enjoy knowing Spazz got up that morning, got ready for work like she has since 1986...sat at her desk, had her coffee...went downstairs to help 2 colleagues....and never went back. RIP Sherri Rasmussen.
I know....THAT was awesome. Those detectives were having too much fun during that interrogation. They hardly had to do a thing, crazy psycho did all the work. They just sat back and watched the show. On a more serious note, I can imagine Sherry and her family are finally at peace. I am just so elated that her parents were able to have justice for their beloved daughter finally. After everything they went through, I hope in some way they were compensated for the 23 years of pain and anguish of not having any answers for Sherrys murder. I am a bit confused by your comment. Sherri wasn't John's ex, she was his wife. And yes, I agree that she didn't deserve to die. Just looking at how John spoke about her, it was clear Sherri was an amazing woman.
I think OP misread the "ex" part in the summary as though they were referring to the victim as an "ex", instead of referring to Stephanie and John's relationship. But I think their point is that the victim, named Sherri Rasmussen, wasn't named in the summary, which feels disrespectful. In a lot of true crime media, the victim is an afterthought to the crime. So OP is asking for the summary to be reworded and for Sherri to be referred to by name instead of being referred to by her relationship to another person. Because that sort of relegates her to this faceless human being, instead of the real, complex, living person that she was. Which I completely agree with.

But when she tells the truth: “No. No, I did not go to their wedding! No. I did not go.”
The difference is so telling

Contrast that with the answer she IMMEDIATELY gave about where John lives and the inconsistency with her going back and forth on whether she really kept in touch with him over the years. She knows his address, but can't recall if they kept in contact... Right. She appears to have confounded herself wih the confusion tactic, whoops!
She knew, she payed attention to him, quite clearly. That makes the instant recollection of the address a massive red flag, for a guy she just "dated a million years ago" (Not a non-verbal one, so not a focus for Logan, but of interest to her interrogators).
I love that she uses terms like "jeez" and "shucks" to portray innocence. She doesn't even swear, how could she possibly murder?

But good point

25:42 "Yeah, I know she got killed."
This wording is really interesting to me.

I think she actually has hyperthyroidism causing the appearance of her eyes (exophthalmos) in some photos and not others, because she also has a goitre in some photos. She thought she had gotten away with.murder for over 20 years and then all of a sudden she is being surprise interrogated about it...she would be in complete panic, flight or fight mode. Unable to control herself and act normal
@@johnnyflannigan136 that’s true
All of those 'gosh' and 'jeez'. I'm so innocent I don't even curse.

@@VirginiaGeorge didn't you get that she's a picture nut? gosh, gee...
She thought she would get away with it for the same reason the cops didn’t look into her initially. She knew the police would protect her until they needed to get another arrest under their belt.
Right 😂 cops are useless
I used to say cops dont stop crime they come in and solve them afterward but hell, theyre just a glorified clean up crew
DNA! From the bite mark she left on Sherry's arm
She knows she’s so screwed and she is freaking out.
I def get the frustration at the initial investigators, but you've got to have some appreciation for how the new investigators handled the case. DNA evidence aside, they were able to plan out and lay the foundation for Stephanie to dig her own grave, and do so in a way that allowed them to use this film in court. Really cool.
Not the guys doing the interview. The guys who solved the case were totally kicked out of it entirely. They had 2 other random dudes do the interview
I just have to say, you have THE best intro on UA-cam. Sometimes I go back and watch it over a few times cause it's so cool!

I feel like she DID in fact go too the wedding, She just wasn't invited and no one knew she was there.
She was probably hiding under the altar or dressed up as a church plant.
That's fucking terrifying.
She was probably hiding in the bushes with some binoculars.
Or dressed as a boy.
Can't express how happy I am that you're covering this interrogation. Watched the JCS Criminal Psychology commentary on it several months ago. This case stuck with me because of how unbelievable and ridiculous her interrogation was.

Wicked timing! I was just talking about this case. She was a close family friend and we couldn't believe it when she got caught; we thought she was framed until this interview footage was released. She's so clearly guilty.

Real nice of Stephanie to remove any of the doubt for you!
Her whole demeanor screams "how DARE you question me!" to me. I kept getting this sense of imperious disbelief even while she was throwing word salad at the investigators. I guess that was her go-to reaction to save herself.
Ya, ew.
Same. My thought: you could tell she instantly knew exactly why she was being questioned. She’s thinking, they KNOW.
This is her brain trying to stall for time to see if she can figure a way to wiggle out of the inevitable.
This interview is infamous in the true crime community, but I am glad to see you breaking it down 👌🏾

I AM pissed that you ‘forgot’ to take out the chicken. Stop looking at my eyebrows!”

LMAO love this 😂😂
😆
In a good relationship you shouldn’t have to be deceitful or lie in any case. And you usually know each other well enough to read them a bit. I don’t think it would be an issue because if you’re good at reading people, you don’t end up with liars and manipulators, you end up with honest people who are good communicators 🤷♀️
"Don't look at my eyebrows or lip corners, look at that chicken! You know what its nonverbal language tells me? It says IT'S FREAKING FROZEN! I TOLD YOU TO TAKE IT OUT OF THE FREEZER DIDN'T I!?"

RIP Sherri 🌹💔
Please use her name in the description box; she wasn't just an "ex" of John's. She didn't deserve to die.
