Mo Solar Car - an open source electric car to save our cities? [First Look]

  • Full report at www.redferret.net . The Mo solar powered electric car may look weird, downright ugly even, but it could be one of the ways we try and combat the problem with over-crowded, over-polluted, congested cities in the future.
    It travels at around 25km/h, which clearly keeps it well away from Tesla territory (the S model probably reverses at twice that speed), but then again, it's clearly going to be better than a bicycle in the rain. And you can carry a child in the back seat, plus some shopping. Try doing that on a motorbike.
    It's in prototype form now, with plans to release later this year, at a price of around 4000 euros. The open source plans mean, however, that anyone can build their own for less if they have the skills. Which is interesting.

    best open source project in recent times

      Word is that the project is stalled with only one guy working on it full time. If it's open source they should just release a version 0.1 to the community, then they would have hundreds of people working on it all for free. :D

    A Spanish company is selling these in flat kits for export. The price is competitive if you have somewhere the width is not a hindrance.

    5000 Euro is way too much for what is essentially a DIY hack. You can buy a 2-3 years old economy car for that or a brand new scooter/motorcycle. For this to work you need to bring the price way down to 1000-2000 euro range.
    I don't see where 5000 euro would be spent. I would calculate, 2x150W solar panels + charge controller 350 Euro, 250w motor + 10-15ah lipo battery + controllers 350-400 euro, wheels/brakes drive-train 200 euro, plywood 150 euro, acrylic for windows/mudguards etc 200 euro, seats 100euro, lights running gear 60 euro, around 1500 Euro total without labour of course.

      Nobody is going to give it away to you just because you are a cheap skate. Materials are high due to the need for light weight and labor is not free. Do you volunteer to work for free and pay the bills for operating the factory?

      Someone is China will then, that's just the reality. Its not that I am especially cheap its just that this is approaching the cost of a budget car. My figures were certainly far too conservative with some of the parts costing but regardless the cost is still too high.

      Not too high for Europe. No good for Asia due to the wide body. No good for Europe due to the wide body. No good anywhere except small islands and private estates.

      they pocket it out with a cnc now. My guess is 70% of the wood is removed in their latest versions.

      Why bother? Too wide for bike lanes and too slow to stay with traffic.

      "Too wide for bike lanes and too slow to stay with traffic."
      LOL, you know the same applies to your oh so precious ELF, right? So why bother with the ELF.
      edit: sorry for the snark. I just found it the height of irony that someone who champions the ELF, which constantly gets the same criticism, would use the same derisive language.

    • @popeyegordon
      @popeyegordon 7 років тому

      Shinduru -absolutely does not apply to my ELF which is a full two feet narrower! I never have a problem using bike lanes and bike trails safely and courteously but this thing is so wide there is no choice but to use it out in the primary lanes where it will piss off drivers, can't easily pull to the side and let others pass. It is doomed to failure from inception.
      The only derisive language here is from you. The ELF is not even close to being as wide, not comparable at all, in any way, shape or form.

    • @Shindinru
      @Shindinru 7 років тому

      First, the Mo is 55 inches (1.4m) wide the ELF is 48 inches, that's only 8 inches not two feet. I'm tired of being nice. Learn math.
      Second the standard set down for bike lanes/trails is 36 inches per lane, a full foot narrower then the ELF is. So by definition the ELF is too wide for bike lanes and trails.
      Once again you are all bluster, misinformation and exaggeration.

    • @Shindinru
      @Shindinru 7 років тому

      And apparently I can't type that 8 is a mis-key and should be 7.
