- The Truth About Cheap Motorcycle Levers
www.sportbiketrackgear.com/th...
There are many places to save money on your track bike but levers, and any of your controls in general, are not one of those places. There's a couple of things on this motorcycle that if they let you down, if they fail, if they're a poor quality or poor design and there's an issue with it, you could have a really big problem that could cause serious injury or worse.
This all started when one of our good customers purchased a set of Spiegler brake lines for his 2017 Yamaha R6. He watched my kick-ass install video and installed the brake lines on his bike, went for a ride, and the brakes locked up on him. He left a comment on the install video for help on fixing the problem. After reaching out to him, we were eventually able to determine the cause of the problem, which were the cheap aftermarket levers he installed on the bike. He agreed to send the levers over to us so we could get a look at them.
This video isn't an ad for CRG, we just want to point out some of the differences in a quality name brand lever versus a cheap no-name lever that you find on eBay or Amazon. Let us know what you think. Tell us what kind of levers you use, and if you've had any experience with any of these cheep levers.

Sorry to hear you crashed man. Thank you for taking the time to share the video, this will help others (well at least the ones smart enough to understand we a just trying to educate them) from having a similar experience. - Van
Sportbike Track Gear Sorry I don’t want to mislead you, it wasn’t me in the Video. It belongs to someone called Cory. He put up such a good description of what caused the crash and it’s basically what you are stating! His and your video has stopped me buying cheap aftermarket levers. There is also a crash of someone on a track day, in the UK going flat Out, the front wheel locks and he totals the bike but walks away.If it had been on the streets I’m sure he would be dead.
Lol that dude just grabbed the front brake riding one handed
@@sportbiketrackgear So must this thing move or not, the guy in the vid says he crashed because it was moving ..

HAHA!!!

Bahahhaha stop it
I’ve never had 1 single issue from the eBay levers and I’ve bought like 3 sets for my R6. The only downside is that the black fades into this gold-ish color. I won’t be suckered into spending $100+ for some levers. They shouldn’t cost that much. Everyone has different experiences and opinions about the “good stuff”. I’ll stick with my eBay levers and spend the $80-$90 I saved by not buying ASV levers on something else.
yea, something else like your hospital bills once the lever suddenly stops functioning
Xta-C Dummy. They work fine and will continue to do so.
And that was the last thing RAD Chili ever said before he ran through a busy intersection and got trampled by a semi. According to authorities, cause of fatality was traced down to brake failure.
@@user-cg9vp9bf5d I'll just tag in.. I have these exact levers in the video and unless theres a new design they dont have this problem his speaking of.. no binding the pin lock thing his talking about is free an loose...
@@robzillagarage but now we know what problems could arise from the Chinese levers. Only thing that needs to be done is test it out and see if it binds or not. If it does, tell the seller it's crap and you get your money back (if you buy it on aliexpress). No harm done. You can do this until you get a fully functioning one. That's it.
Thank you for putting this out there. My front wheel almost locked up after installing a set of these cheap levers. There are videos on UA-cam of crashes caused by these levers. Not worth it. Brian is spot on.
You're welcome and thanks for watching! - Van
if your brakes locked up after you installed aftermarket levers, its probably because you installed them incorrectly.
I've installed cnc levers from China on my gen 1 fazer 1000, not an ounce of problems at all, and as to the allowed movement of the pin on the end of the clutch and brake cables, I've messed around with bike ones, they don't move, they're not supposed to move, why would you want them to move??? That's just gives another strain point on the cable, it needs to be rigid

Never had a problem with cheap levers, had them on about 6 different bikes! And will continue to buy them
Me too dude. I actually just bought a set of the mzs that he discusses first, and i love em
I bought the blk& red "ride it" levers and outta the box the blind hole for the pin was "loosey goosey" there was SOME play all I did was tighten the nut on bottom a little and slapped a little grease on it good to go and the shorty size was a little longer than rc2.but other than that they been good to go for 6yrs now.

HI BRIAN,
am going to change the stock break lever , clutch lever. thank you for the info Gosh.
.
I'm glad I watched your video because i bought these levers and when i tested them I almost crashed due to the front brake locking up on me due to that cross pin being in that fixed position with no flex in it. Good thing I was going slow when it happened. I don't have an issue with it now since it has probably "adjusted" are my near miss. The clutch actually sticks a bit and is slow to return to the normal position thus not engaging the engine fully. I will be taking this shyt off and going with your recommendations. Thanks!

Hello B,
I'm a new rider and I broke my clutch lever on my 2016 Moto Guzzi v7ii Racer. I was looking at the Niree adjustable/foldable levers. Besides OEM, I cannot locate a good reliable aftermarket replacement. Any advice on this? Thank you, sir.

Are You able to remove the cross-pin from the lever on the "MZS"? If so, would you use a dremel or sandpaper to free up some space where the cross-pin goes, re-install it and have the play necessary to prevent brakes from locking up?
You should not have to do that, the lever should be good to go out of the box. - Van
@@sportbiketrackgear I understand that 100%. I was shedding some light for the people that don't mind fiddling with their bike parts and would go the extra mile to make the levers work for them. But at sub $50 you should not expect the precision that's present in the premium levers
I deff want to trust my brakes to a home dremel job......
@@clintknowlton4589 .......you're only putting trust in yourself. If you don't trust yourself then, easy, don't attempt it and go out and buy premium levers instead.

Thank you for this video, was just about to purchase those cheap levers and was looking for information on UA-cam. Im a new rider and after watching this Ill be spending a hell of lot more money on my levers. Thanks

First of all I want to say great safety information in this video! You had me worried since I found this video right after installing the Amazon Chinese levers on my grom and z125. I watched this video 3 or 4 times trying to understand how such a simple lever could fail like you talk about. Secondly, I wish you would've talked about the difference between axial and radial brake masters. It took me a while to realize that the grom and z125 levers are axial and don't have that cross pin bearing and that there is literally no way for those to fail, in that manner. Aside from a little up and down play (really no worse than stock) I am resting easy now lol. Thank goodness, there was no way I would've spent $200 on levers for either of those bikes.😄
You will not have the problem described in this video with your Z. - Van
Got a pair of foldable, extendable lever for 25 quid on amazon, I've bought like 4 sets on all my different bikes, absolutely good quality, simple and robust design, nothing to fail on there, on the other hand, my XT600 had a set of ASV levers on it (they are like 80 quid EACH if i'm not mistaken), one time the bike fell off the kickstand and landed on the bars, i pick it back up, nothing special, about 20 mins later when i go to leave at the 3rd or so redlight trying to stop, going to pull the clutch in, lever snaps off and made my bike almost jump into the intersection... I've dropped, hit and clipped my bike dozens of times with these amazon levers on, they never failed or shown any signs of failure.
@Thgt Ggyh so you don't drop your bike when offroading? You are the perfect rider in that case... The XT600 is a dual sport, pretty sure the falls are from offroad riding
@Thgt Ggyh that's because the clutch lever broke and the bike launched forward you knobhead... and in no way it is because of his riding. learn to read but mostly understand
Wow... I just bought a 2017 R6 and these MRS lever already installed on it. I’ve only ridden the bike twice so far but I won’t be riding it again until I replace those lever! This video is a life saver! Going to pick up a set of CRG levers now.
Happy to help out. This is the kind of shit people need to know. Enjoy the new bike. - Van
Well I learned something here and now off to check my modified front brake set up. Thanks.
I'm gunna check my MZS levers Monday.
I haven't had any problems the last 2 seasons.
Thanks for the heads up.
I ended up taking off my $30 chinese levers and put the stock levers back on until I can afford a good set. My brake lever was bound up just like those cheap one's that Van had. I'd rather be on the safe side instead of crashing my 11k zx6r.. not worth it.
Any update? Still use the mzs?
@@krisreeves6242 I actually switched back to my OEM levers, but NOT because the MZS levers failed in anyway.
Honestly, I got tired of the embarrassment of stalling my bike at the beginning of every riding season.
The MZS levers never got stuck, or hung up. I did lubricate the pivot pins with lithium grease.
Hope this helps.
@@huffingfarts hey thanks this is super helpful - I ordered these from whatever province in China they are coming from (not arrived yet) and haven’t installed them yet. It’s good to know there is a chance they will arrive mechanical sound...

Great video...I’ve always known not to buy cheap levers but not the problems or things to look for with them!
Another great video. I’ve come across and watched a few times over the past couple years. You seem to really like the CRG levers, how do they compare to the driven Halo levers? Would you definitely chose one over the other and why?
Both the Driven and the CRG are excellent options. We have been using the CRG because we prefer the full length lever. The Driven Halo levers are a 3/4 length. - Van
Another great video guys. On my R6 race bike I run CRG carbon fiber levers with the remote brake adjust. On my supermoto I'm running ASV. You get what you pay for, and levers are certainly a no compromise part, they have to perform every time. Better to spend $100 per lever than have to pay $1,000 or more to fix your bike when you crash because of crappy cheap levers.
We are 100% on the same page. - Van

My OEM levers dont even have those bushings
Yup ordered one from Amazon. I was scared when I watched this video and never bought them until recently I pulled plug after many recommending for my motorcycle. By that time I remember the watching video but didnt remember the reason not to buy.
Well my break levers are so fucking simple, just a simple lever that can is held by original nut and bolt. No other bearing and stuff.

I appreciate this video. I bought a set of very high quality levers and because of this video ended up realizing a mistake I made installing them. I had sloppily applied thread lock to the front brake actuator pin and it dripped into the rotating bushing locking it into a single position. Went back to check it because of this video and realized the issue.
Happy to hear this was helpful! - Van
One of your best videos I’ve seen you do. Great information, thanks. 👍🏻🇺🇸👍🏻🇺🇸
Thanks man, appreciate it! - Van
ive never had any problems with "cheap" ebay billet levers and ive used them on most of my bikes since i started riding back in 1991. used them on my suzuki katanas, gsxr's, rf900 and now my kawasaki zx14r. love them. i make sure to use synthetic grease on all of the "friction points" to make sure they always operate smoothly and blue threadlock on the nut under the levers so it has no chance of vibrating off.
Happy to hear you have had a good experience using these junk levers on your bikes. Personally I would not install them on a riding lawnmower. - Van
I use to stand by Chinese levers; they can definitely get the job done for the avg street rider. After converting my bike to track-only though, I was throwing the Chinese levers out by noon and putting the OEM ones back on! The play that you showed in this video is important if you're looking for the absolute most precise and smooth lever actuation. For me, with a quick-shifter, the up/down play in the (clutch) lever wasn't very bothering. My problems with the Chinese levers came when I started to heavily brake into the corners. There is SO much flex in the lever when you squeeze the piss out of it. It actually gave so much that I had to adjust my levers another 1-2 clicks, which was uncomfortable, but gave me enough stroke to not bottom out! It was crazy. I'm sticking with OEM from now on... I might do a shorty lever on the clutch side and I do I'm definitely going with a name-brand like Pazzo, CRG, etc.
I got vortex lever for brake and use Chinese for clutch. The vortex came with the same knuckle as the Chinese one
Loved this video. Would you recommend self-installation of these CRG levers? Would really appreciate if you had tips on installation for first-timers! Thank you.
Yes I feel that is a project most can handle on their own. Search our channel for CRG installs, we have several of them on different models. - Van
Brian's install videos and his love of motorcycling along with taking his personal time to respond to comments is why I now buy all my stuff from STG. I actually just bought some Spiegler brake lines and the cleaning kit. I am glad I have ASV levers on my 17 R6, just wish I knew about STG sooner instead of my money going to other companies before.
Thank you for watching, leaving this comment and your support! Reading comments like this feels pretty damn good! - Brian Van
Great video! Thanks :). At first, I was skeptical - "Oh great, another retailer trying to convince me to buy expensive stuff" - but what you said made total sense! Also, it was awesome that you were very respectful and made it clear you had no ill will against China, but these motorcycle levers are just dangerous. Before watching this, I was completely unaware of the axial master cylinder/lever setup, having ridden mostly dirt bikes.
That being said, I believe there is room for some clarification. For this axial master cylinder/lever setup, the Chinese quality control makes these levers DANGEROUS. Even with modification and maintenance to make it smooth and tight, I am not sure how the materials would wear.
HOWEVER, for simpler levers, like those on dirt bikes, without the axial design, Chinese levers should be totally fine IF you check them out to make sure they are structurally sound and don't bind at the pivot point in the master cylinder or perch. Sure, they will have more slop and be generally less refined, but they should work fine.
Thanks for the great video!
Cheers
If you lose your brake lever on a road bike you are in some deep shit. Is saving literally a couple of bucks worth risking yourself and your machine? - Van
Oh yeah, but there's a HUGE gap in pricing between the 'better' ones and the ones that come from China, like, £120 a set of Pazzos versus £14 from China, where they're being produced anyway!
Dirt bike rider here. It's a total waste of money buying the cheap Chinese levers, they rattle apart in no time and the tolerances are rubbish. Did it once, regretted it, now will only buy and install Zeta levers. They might cost more but they are worth every cent. Ride on!
"I'm sensitive" 😂
As always, superb video!

I believe 95 percent of the headaches I have had in my business ( 35 years) have been caused by inferior aftermarket parts. I have had countless issues with lever fitment. I support your videos making the public aware of these poor fitting parts. Keep up the good work. If ONLY 1% of the levers sold were bad, how many people would that account for? Your body sliding across the ground isn't worth saving a buck...
Your a motorcycle mechanic? if you watch the video of the guy coming down at the 10 sec mark just before he goes down the motor soars in revs, whats that got to do with the front brake locking up? sounds like he grabbed a handful of clutch and lost control.

@@kx501 my comment stands.
@@patrickscycleshop It still stands? Without even addressing what @Bike Modder said?
@@sekou3758 irregardless of how this guy crashed his bike. My comment still stands about the poor quality of aftermarket parts manufacturing. I remove a lot of these levers from bikes that cause the brake Pistons to stick in causing brake drag, brake light switches to stick in or in general poor fit. I've seen quite a few of these levers break without ever having contacted the ground. As I said my comment stands about the poor quality of aftermarket parts.
@@sekou3758 he may well be right about the clutch grab, not going to deny that but as I said, my low opinion of inferior aftermarket parts still stands.
Properly working brakes are more important than a working throttle or even engine. Sure, wear happens, but at the point where they don't brake anymore, you better pray you have good enough gear to take that coming impact unless you can engine brake enough to survive.
I been riding for more then 12 years I believe If I am meant to die , I will die now matter if I have Pazzos or CRG.

At the annual BMW motorcycle weekend party in southern Germany, the German Police had a booth and they showed a rack of "aftermarket" stuff that is Illegal for use on German roads. Aftermarket "cheap" brake levers were on their rack. These kill riders in the Alps and elsewhere.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to share this. IMO this is a real problem from hard parts to safety gear that needs to be sorted out. - Van
I'm with you too bro, I believe 100% these are dangerous and SHOULD be OUTLAWED IN THE USA as well!
Exactly how do the German Police identify "cheap" aftermarket levers?!
@@hoomannili My question too.
dude. in germany, anything that is not factory fitted or doesn't have compliance certificate for the specific model is illegal, so even your beautiful $200 levers would be defined as 'Alpine riders' killers' xD
My wife got the MZS levers on her 300 and it was a disaster. ( she got them second hand, and had her friend install them ) I didn't know about it but it was a complete disaster. awesome video, thank you for making this video, the world needs to know about top shelf quality levers for not only their safety, but the safety of others around them.
Thanks for sharing! We just turned this video on a couple hours back and there are already multiple comments regarding issues with these levers. One comment noted the front brake locking as well. Let's see how many more are posted after this video has been up a little longer. - Brian Van
STG - the same exact thing happened to me. I commented on this on this topic in one of your other videos. After my front brake locked up, I reinstalled the EOM levers later that day. As much as I would like to install aftermarket levers, that close-call experience is telling me to stay away and not roll the dice.
same experience ...putting my original OEM levers back on also
this video made me check the tolerances on the mzs levers... hadn't realized how sloppy they were. not going to risk it, I ordered the upgraded OEM shorty handles from Triumph before taking the street triple to a track day. thanks for the advice STG. I even found some that are only $42 for the set, $8 more expensive than the chinese knock offs. No Brainer to stick with OEM.
He is not advising, he is selling...to gullible fools.
I had the same thing happen to my CBR 1000RR when I bought it. Bought some levers off eBay and went for a ride and only made it about 300 yards and my front brake lock up. Each time I squeeze the lever the more it lock. I actually had to Walk home and get my wrench and swap out the levers on side of the street to even ride the bike home. If I would have made it to the interstate which was about 3 miles away it would have been really bad. I pray that I never made it. But I will never buy Chinese eBay or Amazon levers again. NEVER..... So I agree with this video 100%. Saving a few bucks isn't worth crashing a 14000 bike or worse losing my life over it.
Appreciate you sharing this man and happy to hear you did not crash your bike! Amazon has opened the door for poor quality products with crazy low prices. When you look at the listing the photos make the item look amazing, deal of the century. It leaves some people with the impression they are getting ripped off if they invest in a better quality product.
Having the opportunity to compare CRG and MZS Levers side by side is not something most would ever get to do. I can tell you that there is a massive difference between them. - Van
I put some on my buddies 600rr and had the exact same thing happen. Day before a trackday so I told him go ride it to make sure it's good. He called me from the first stop sign he came to and I had to beat the pin out with a hammer and screwdriver lol
Same thing happened to me except I made it to the highway. Luckily I didn’t go down but I came to a complete stop right around a blind turn and there I was stuck in lane 2 with my bike trying to get drivers attention so me and the bike wouldn’t get hit. Shit went on for almost 10 minutes before someone finally pulled over to help. That shit was sketchy and I’m super blessed it wasn’t way way worse.

You are welcome. The MT 09 is a great bike, for sure worth investing is quality parts! - Van
I love STG but I also love my $30 eBay levers which are undoubtedly from China. I also know people who have had $700+ rearsets snap like toothpicks. Quality is important though and you must inspect any part that goes on your motorcycle putting safety above everything else! I think Brian does a great job of trying to educate riders and get people to focus on safety and that is never a bad thing!
Agreed. It sounds like the story was 1 part cheap lever, 9 parts poor installation and poor testing.
I think that's pretty cavalier, considering we're talking about something that could catastrophically fail at any moment. I'll save money by buying cheap chinese made knockoffs when it's a wallet or sunglasses, but when it's something that you need to depend on to keep you safe, buyer beware.
You could apply that rationale to a great many parts on a motorcycle. Don't get me wrong, I think you absolutely SHOULD apply said rationale liberally, as motorcycles are inherently dangerous. But regardless, an aluminum bar is an aluminum bar. The line-bearing-housing interaction needs to be seated correctly, lubed, and obviously to fit with integrity. If that is the case, worry not.
Either way, giving your money to STG is a good decision, so that's another plus to the expensive levers. STG takes good care of us all.
The issue with this particular lever was not caused by improper installation IMO. The tolerance between the cross pin bushing and the lever body was too tight which caused it to bind. Said binding caused the brakes to lock. - Van
Well said my man! If the $4 sunglasses shit the bed you just throw them in the trash and move on. - Van
The end result of the video applies to ALL riders, regarding any new gear. (no matter who makes it) Inspect your new gear, BEFORE you install them, AFTER you install them, do a pre-ride check , and then an "in/on-ride" check. If it works properly 100 percent, include it into your weekly/monthly maintenance intervals. If it does not function the way it is advertised, RETURN THEM, immediately.
Thanks for this video. I contemplated buying those same type of levers, glad I didn't. Could you recommend a good lever for the 2018 Kawasaki z650. I haven't had any luck finding CRG ones.
I did a little research and it looks like Vortex offers levers for your bike. Our listing only goes to 2016 for the Ninja 650 but Vortex shows fitment to 2018 for the EX650 Ninja 650R. Below are links to the brake and clutch levers.

@@sportbiketrackgear Let me tell you, your videos have saved me and my buddies THOUSANDS in labor costs Van!! We love you guys at STG!!!!
Every brake locking/cheap lever problem I've seen so far has been with radial master cylinders. If you don't have a radial master, you'll most likely be fine. If you do have a radial master, there's a pretty good chance you'll still be fine but you have to take a long hard look at your set up and make sure it's working right.
Radial masters are the common denominator for the locking brakes at this point for sure. That said not everyone knows the difference between radial and axial. Let's not forget the horrible tolerances these levers have. Better to leave the OEM levers on then install these MZS, they have better feel. - Van
Agree 100%, people seem to think that they can pay 10% and get 100%. Not how it works! I treat the mods i make for my bike (cosmetics excluded) as if i were buying new tires, i'd not skimp out on those, so neither will i for a lever or rearset, or chain...
@@Patrickisnt ha ha, example, my XJR1300 - front wheel OEM bearing (NSK) 20 Euros, go to any shop and the same bearing is 10, be it SKF, Koyo, NSK :D
with expensive levers you pay 500% and still get 100% at the most ;)

I have a general rule: NO cheap parts on a motorcycle. It's just not worth it.
I also have a general rule, don't crash.
Hi,
Loved your review, and it was right on time before I clicked on that buy-it-now button for these MZS levers, thank you :)
do you have any recommendations for similar CRG levers or a similar sets that are suitable for Honda rebel500 ABS 2021?
Sorry we focus on sportbikes and I am not aware of any aftermarket levers for the model you noted. Thanks for watching! - Van
I got two pairs of those chinese levers because I'm learning motogymkhana so I drop my bikes very often. I got the foldable ones and so far they work fine even after the occasional tip over but man you are right. What would you suggest if you knew you would be dropping your bike often? Nice brake lever guards and OEM levers? Nice foldable OEM levers?
Hand guards do help to protect the bike in a tip over as do folding levers. That said having one of both does not guarantee the levers won't be damaged in a fall. IMO installing a set of these levers on your bike is a bad idea. Better to leave the OEM if you don't want to invest in a quality set of aftermarket levers. Another option for you to consider would be installing a shorty set of levers on the bike. They are far less likely to be damaged in a crash than a standard length lever. - Van
Thank you for this video! It's documented that this has happened to many riders, who knows how many riders have died because of cheap unregulated Chinese parts .
If you had a crash and you suspect it was caused by Chinese levels...change your levers - BUT keep your levers and
purchase receipt, packaging, etc (and document your damage) - we need some kind of legal action against these manufacturers, I'm looking into it, but this type of thing could take years. But please keep your receipts/documents (very important) for going forward with any type of lawsuit. I will be posting in videos like this one with updates and once things get going will setup a formal website.
This is a bigger problem than most would believe. - Van
Yea, but unfortunately there is no way to hold these Chinese companies accountable. So many Chinese companies steal intellectual properties and it is not like the Chinese government is going to enforce any kind of punishment or fine. Best thing to do is spread to word to everyone to not buy cheap knock offs. The reality is, most riders who buy the cheap stuff like this probably do not realize just how much they are gambling with their life. If they did, I doubt they would purchase the cheap knock off stuff.
I don't doubt the level of Quality on a expensive line of levers is excellent. They have gorgeous products. Those are premium features that not even OEM levers have. OEM also tend to have a bit of play. I bought some nice Spiegler lines from you guys over a year ago May 2017 for my FZ1 with R1 front end fork conversion and I run them with Chinese lever and M/C. Zero problems. I also bought a used R1 that also had Chinese levers on them and they had been on the bike a long time with no issue. My brother has a 2015 R1 with them with out issues and my friend has a Triumph Street Triple that he picked used up from a shop with those type of levers already on it. All of them have seen track days and canyon/mountain rides without issue.
Just by looking at the comments on here its like everyone thinks this happens all the time. If this is the cause then shouldn't it happen 100% of the time? Are those the actual levers on the customers bike? Were they tested to in fact prove this is the issue.? R&D is not done like that. And if they are truly dangerous levers why could you see them on an old clapped out bike? Dangerous is dangerous. If they are the true issue they shouldn't be on any bike. Cost of the bike is irrelevant to cost of life. Making statements like clip ons breaking under brake pressure?
Support the products you sell . That's good business sense. You guys are a quality seller which is why I made a purchase from you after seeing your video also. But don't use hearsay and scare tactics and say I love Chinese people "BUT"..
Nothing in this video has been misrepresented, these levers caused the brakes to lock on the R6. I did not do this to scare people, I did it to share something I feel needs to be shared man. You are correct not all of them have issues. That said ask yourself if you want to be the guy who's brakes lock up and you fall because they did? It is also a fairly safe bet these products are not backed by any product liability insurance. While I do not know that for a fact I will say it would be very difficult to cover the expense of said insurance when you are selling a set of levers for $40. End of the day we should all do what we feel is right for us. - Van
It only has to happen once. Someone tells me a dog bites, I dont go pet it because he looks fine.
@@deathwish8339 Porsche and Ferrari break down. We own BMW and Audi's in the family and have recalls. It happens. Nothing is perfect 100% of the time. I'm not saying the Premium Stuff isn't amazing. Ball Bearing in the adjuster is cool. But once you adjust the lever to your comfort do you ever change it? The factory OEM doesn't have that feature , so comparing it to another brand and saying its not as good because it doesnt have that feature is a bit silly. Now looking at the pivot bushing design that Brian Van pointed out IS different from the Brembo design on my R1 and the Brembo RCS design that is fairly common on many bikes. SO with the rotating bushing being tight as BV pointed out he may be right. But that is not every design .And I'm sure that you could free that bushing up fairly easy IF that was a common issue.Should you have to free a bushing? NO, but like any motorcycle maintenance it wouldn't hurt to check an make sure everything is smooth. As I looked at the comments I saw that there was a blanket response that everything NOT from a premium brand was unsafe. Should you support the premium brands since they put in the R&D that is often copied? Sure if you like. But Even the OEM copy each other as well. As far strength is concerned, all levers break in crashes regardless of make. Like I said, this not a knock to STG as I am a paying customer and follow their page.
@@chrisjones7281 Thanks for taking the time to leave this! You could 100% free up that bushing if you had enough knowledge and experience to see the need to do so. The reality is most riders do not have said knowledge nor should they need to, the levers should simply me made to the correct tolerances. I am not saying only premium brands are safe, I am saying these MSZ levers have shit tolerances and have caused the front brake to lock on several bikes (multiple comments in this video already noting brake locking).
I feel best practice when shopping for brake components, levers, handlebars, rearsets and drive line components is to stick with known brands that have proven themselves to perform. Taking it a step further I also believe we should all support brands to invest in the research and development that works towards making this sport better. The motorcycle industry is very unique when you compare it to others out there. You won't find many people who make their living in this industry living in a mansion or flying in a private jet. Sure you can make a decent living if you work your ass off, passion for riding is the real driving force. - Brian Van
@@chrisjones7281 Porsche and Ferrari do break down, as do all vehicles. They also bring a somewhat unique driving exerience with their crazy performance. You are paying for the outstanding performance and relatively high reliability. A better comparison is, would you buy a known brand like Mercedes or a knockoff clone of a Mercedes like a BYD (chinese manufacturer) for 1/3rd the price. Be honest now.
Brian thanks for this information. I was just about to buy some because of a great deal. Not anymore. I bought a 2003 Suzuki Alstare mint 20000 Klm. I wanted to change my levers. What would you suggest for that year?
I would recommend the CRG Spectrum Levers, excellent quality at a fair price. Here is a link to them on our site: www.sportbiketrackgear.com/parts/suzuki/gsx-r600/2003?_bc_fsnf=1&Department=Levers

Another great video, thank you! I recently found your channel and I think I've watched close to everything lol. I'm looking at new levers for my bike, just wondering if you have ever heard of Raximo levers out of Germany?
Sorry I have not heard of nor seen that brand. Often times there are some really good brands that never get distributed outside of their country of origin. - Van
Axial master cylinders use simpler levers than radial ones , that means that a cheap and even chinese levers can be used in relative safety but radial ones need really good ones ! But not just for safety but for feeling!
You are correct, now do you think most riders who purchase levers know the difference between radial and axial masters? IMO they should not have to know the difference, the levers being sold need to be manufactured to proper tolerances. - Van
Sportbike Track Gear you are absolutely right! I have some Chinese levers as spares and the difference between “good Chinese levers” and bad ones is just too much as a gamble if you don’t know what you are doing
To preface, I HATE the Chinese knock-off economy, but I disagree profoundly with the general sentiment expressed here. Drivers, and Riders even moreso because we should hold ourselves to a higher standard, should understand the simple terminology and technology involved in constructing our machines. Knowledge is power and you wouldn't need to make these videos if Riders understood simple engineering principles.
I literally have the same exact levers on my cb919 and they have worked flawlessy since installed. I think I can speak for 95% of everyone watching this video and say that I'd choose a cheap $30 pair of levers over a $300 pair any day.
A 5% failure rate on a brake lever is horrible. These MZS levers are so sloppy you are better off with the OEM levers on the bike. - Van
@@sportbiketrackgear I agree. I would never accept a 5% failure rate. I also would never gamble my life on a failure rate like that.
Hi. I’m on a 2019 GSXR 750. I’m comfortable with the stock levers. Why should I replace them? Honest question. I’ve upgraded the brake lines to Spiegler already. HUGE difference. But the levers, what is the benefit?
If you are happy with the stock levers no reason not to run them. With aftermarket you can typically expect a little more adjustability, better looks as well as having the option to add a folding lever. Folding levers can help reduce the chance the lever breaks in a tip over. - Van
Thanks for this insightful information. Would you recommend the 1FNGR clutch and brake levers?😊
LOL I had to google that shit. - Van
@@sportbiketrackgear I believe they're really well-known in the Stunting community. Anyways, what do you make of them: 'Easy Pull' (30%), 'Japanese Bearings' and a ''Neutral Safety Switch'??
So the takeaway here is: "Inspect your eBay levers before installing them!"
Not really. You now know some things to watch out for with levers (thanks for the great video)! What problems will kill you with other substandard parts? I'd suggest that if you have enough knowledge to reliably spot lethal defects, you wouldn't usually be buying dangerous parts in the first place.
Buying a part that will kill you, then catching that fault at inspection is a 'near miss' - the last chance before you're injured/dead. I've ridden with cheap levers, and I've had a brake lever come off while doing 70+ on a GSX-R1000 on a public road. Somehow managed to stop in time with engine braking & the rear brake, but have since only used ASV levers (DOI: now have a sponsorship with ASV).
The takeaway is: don't skimp on critical parts. Just because it looks and acts like a quality part at inspection (as mine did) does not mean it will continue to function reliably.
@@Mojoissimo So the takeaway here is: "Inspect your eBay levers before installing them!"
@@Ru5te No. But feel free to follow your own advice - keeps me in a job. ;-)
@@Mojoissimo Brake pads and brake cylinders maybe, but a simple lever?
@@canturgan One of my GSX-R1000s had a fully floating front disc with amazing calipers, pads, lines etc. Riding hard one day, I pulled on the aftermarket lever, which came apart in my hand, and I watched the parts fly down the road behind me at over 100 mph. The pads & cylinders were great, but I had no way of using them! I now have ASV levers and HEL lines etc sponsorship - I only want the best for my braking system.
All I'm saying is that there are some parts that are underestimated, but actually critical in a serial system. With enough knowledge and experience you can use any part (that's what the factory do to make the bike in the first place)!
Unfortunately the Dunning-Kruger effect means that those with less knowledge (like me) don't know what they don't know - hence will make critical errors when (unwittingly) working beyond our competence. I try to avoid this paradox by relying on highly-knowledgeable people (like ASV) to keep me safe, rather than unknown internet resellers. Some will have enough knowledge to be able to use such parts safely - but I suspect this would entail buying bulk quantities and testing the parts themselves - so in short I suspect this video is not aimed at them, and they are not trying to save a little money on a single pair of levers!

I'm from China and I hate those made in China crap too. Good thing in the states is that they only priced $40,$50 each, so that way you know you are not buying any quality item.
In China, they put big names on those crap and sell them at high rates. You can't really tell the differences cuz for most ppl we don't know what the authentic ones look or feel like.
I hate to say this, but people can buy good things from China when those things don't require quality material or precision.
Here in China, we have a motorcycle company tear a Honda cb500x apart, copied everything and changed the look a little and they say they made a new bike.
Sad thing is that crap is having endless problems. It's really funny cuz it's just like a student copied No.1's homework and still failed class.
