This is a rare and heaven-sent performance...like snaaptaker, I always thought of Clifford Curzon's recording of D. 960 as the "gold standard", along with Clara Haskil's, but after hearing Myra Hess' version I think hers may top all the others. If only the sound quality were better--but it is still such a blessing to have this!
OMG!!! What an absolute treasure! I had no idea she recorded this, although I've hoped she might have. Until now, my favorite recording of this has been Curzon's, but Dame Myra is my all-time favorite pianist, and this has just become my favorite version. Also, her recording of the A-Major sonata, D664, (which you've so thoughtfully posted) has been my favorite for about 40 years. Thank you so much. A very Happy New Year and God Bless.
Funny to think that Myra had to slow down Toscanini for their Beethoven third concerto; he respected her enough to comply, somewhat. Here her tempo seems so natural while sacrificing nothing to more “profound “ players (and I do love Yudina, but this works equally well). Like the Dutch, we Americans always cherished Hess, even before the war when she finally became a British icon. Thanks for posting.
pianist played at the Koscuisko foundation at a Bohemians recital. I neglected to get a program but will post his name. He is 25 years old, Julliard Grad, now at Curtis (same teacher - u know who that is). His abilities rival Hess' in that he shows in such a poetic way each note in a chord and unbelievably has a pp that is so soft and clear and projected, and then is able to get even softer. By the way he has a great sound! THANK YOU GULLIVIOR.
s u b l i m e : the piece being recreated and sounding as Schubert and not 'Mr. This ' or' Mrs. "schubert' , the cult of PERFORMER and composition secondary.... composer s creation f i r s t , the player in his, or here, her proper role! privileged to have heard and met Myra Hess on many occasions........ Myra Hess with Artur Schnabel and Wilhelm Kempff great players of Schubert's creations!
One of the most sensitive pianists we have on record . Hear Yudina in this - it should be famous. It is a revelation ! Haskil gets the character of everything she plays.Chaplin knew her and said she was a genius! Schnabel's rec has even worse sound and every note doesn't always seem part of a philosophy of Schubert . But who amI to talk about the highest .Ill reserve my judgements for the local student's recitals . lol
The taffypull thing seems a little bit much sometimes, but anyone who likes this should seek out the rendition of her chief student, Stephen Kovacevich
Divine -- and sublime playing. Listening to Ms Hess warms my soul and spirit, and suffuses me with a feeling of completeness.
I'm four years late, yet Myra Hess is a poet. Each and every note has meaning and color. Last night a fantastic

Very few pianists capture Franz Schubert's spirit. Here is certainly one of them. Wonderful interpretation ~ thank you!
