1) is called a "perspective projection". As you can see it gives you the illusion of a 3D object only for a certain camera position and angle. It's done in every 3D game you've ever played, i.e. every realistic 3D-box is a perspective projection of a real box. You can experiment with it in photoshop or gimp with filters called "distortion".
