I studied private lessons with Joe in the late 70's when I first came to town. He said "you already have too many chops" do you want to work in the studios or go on the road in a bus? I said, I want to do studio work. He said OK then, forget all that crap were starting over :) As it turned out, a few years later, he was the percussionist on my first TV session and that made me relax and do a good job. I owe a lot to Joe Porcaro.
RIP Joe Porcaro... He didn't just gift us with his own music & knowledge, but also brought up, taught and influenced his sons Jeff, Mike & Steve - three of the most influential musicians of their own time. Rest well Joe - reunited with Jeff & Mike. Sad day...
You do realize that makes perfect sense right? you can't teach yourself what you don't already know, plus you might not even know what you dont know...... I took lessons from a guy who had been a drummer for 45 years, probably one of the greatest drummers that no one's ever heard of, he played everything from the Ed Sullivan show to cruise ships to Disneyland and everything in between, guy had played drums in just about every musical situation imaginable......and that's who you need to learn from somebody with real world experience that's applied their craft in multiple different disciplines. I feel like a lot of these drum lesson teachers around nowadays know how to play the drums but never actually applied it to any kind of real world situation, clearly the pocaros are the right kind of teachers.
Calling him a session drummer is such a insult. Toto, as Still Life, was a band he started in high school and his father was already a renowned musician too.
Ladies and gentlemen, here is a true professional drummer. Technique, listening to the other musicians, practice, thinking about complimenting the singer, no ego, no desire to overpower the rest of the band, no showing off with solos, just doing his absolute best to make the song great. So creative. We lost this nice man way too soon almost 30 years ago. You've heard his playing on hundreds of songs by various artists and never even knew it. A true master.
Just too bad he is coked out of his mind here (hence the constant sniffing and constipation). Imagine if he was sober and didn't basically had to swallow his own bile down all the time. Just goes to show that drugs suck (and he died from cocaine, no matter what the Toto camp wants to tell you)
Joe, no joking, is probably singularly responsible for the “sound” of percussion heard from the 70’s through the 80’s and early 90’s. The Artist/band list alone he produced and played for is nothing short of impressive. This guy is/was a legend. RIP Joe.
I remember learning this shuffle before UA-cam and these videos were ever available anywhere I did this by listening to my dad’s Toto album and playing to it on my Cd ghetto blaster wondering who this guy was this amazing drummer? And by the time I watched an episode on tv His wife was explaining how he had passed on some tv show and I thought, bummer! No one knew who I was talking about when I mention his name. Now if you are a drummer no matter what age you are people know who this legendary drummer is thanks to UA-cam and people sharing this. Great lessons all of them Jeff is one of my all time favourite drummers! Rosanna was bloody Epic and it is one of my go to beats to play every time I play drums.
Never heard Joe Porcaro? He was all over the Toto albums, Rosemary Clooney, Pink Floyd, Nancy Sinatra and tons of others and he sadly outlived most of his children, which can only be insanely painful (and live through the Toto royalty drama as well and be dragged into court) The Porcaros were truly a example of "only the good die young"
For me, Toto died with Jeff's passing. Yeah, the carried on with Simon and they were good but the sound changed. Jeff was Toto & to some extent influnced music round the world.
Music is the most favorite thing in my entire life and have been told I have a great singing voice. However, I am completely clueless when it comes to understanding musical notes even though one of my guitar playing friends says it is all about counting to four. Of all instruments I figured drums were the easiest because I can keep a beat but, after seeing this I might have to settle for bongos, LOL. Both Jeff and his father Joe make it look so easy. Unbelievable how they an break it down so much and say "It goes something like this" when they really mean it does go like this.
Its weird, even when he plays the straight eights groove you can tell its him. Its something you cant "learn" if you ask me, its just a natural thing he had that will never be copied.

great to watch him talk about his playing. Does anyone else think he is fighting indigestion quite on some occasions when he talking? :) So he was human after all! ha!
Actually, I thought that may have been a sign that he didn't have a healthy heart. Just a possibility considering what occurred about 3 years or so later.
