    One thing this compilation captures, which I hadn't really grasped, is how much Shaun Diston's personal CBB fandom plays into his energy on the show. He even makes joking references to "Threedom," without naming it. He's one of us!
    Also, I have to wonder if the RUDI NORTH update 5 segment is where PFT got the idea, which plays out on "The Neighborhood Listen," to draw a distinction between ghosts and ghouls.

    • @BabyFaceBren
      @BabyFaceBren  2 роки тому +2

      Boy you are way ahead of me. I totally missed the "Threedom" reference and I haven't heard any of "The Neighborhood Listen", so that reference went way over my head! But yeah, the Shaun fandom is a great motivator. I love how the crowd responds in the later live shows, when his popularity is evident. It reminds me of the last episode in the Big Chunky Bubbles supercut when the crowd is chanting "BCB! BCB!"

      @@k.pacificnw02134 Your comment reminds me of something I was told once by a program director, from the endless research that goes on, which these days might be seen as an example of "toxic masculinity" (and maybe it is): radio listeners (male and female) will more-easily accept male voices than female, which for some reason are very polarising.
      I first started doing a breakfast show as a bunch of characters, supporting a male-female team, but research showed the female was polarising the audience, so I became a co-host (which created complaints about the characters disappearing, people are never happy!), so it became a show with 2 guys and a girl (good name for a sitcom). Anyway, the ratio of female radio DJs to male has increased slightly in the 20 years since I left radio, but it's always going to be WAY more male announcers than female, because female voices tend to grate says the research and may explain that feeling you get from "The Neighborhood Listen".

    I just want to say to the weirdos (thankfully just a few) who say Scott is not funny: you need to either get your ears checked or your sense of humour! I think sometimes the guests are so over the top, or the studio is so busy and the atmosphere so frantic and raucous that we forget hilarious off-the-cuff lines, usually puns, that Hot Saucerman has contributed. I wish I could think of a few myself, but I know there are many in my 4-part Christmas compilation. Even lines that aren't that funny become so, such as in this video when Leo Williams' back story goes off the rails like Thomas the Tank Engine when he retired (a Scotty Auks line to PFT, whom, in a later episode, got a laugh with it from a guest who thought it was his!). Even though the line written in a script would seem nothing, Scott's delivery cracks me up every time I hear it. I'm sure I'm not the only one 1:13:44

      Without Scott, the show would not work at all... he's the straight man who's the King of Antagony

    • @BabyFaceBren
      @BabyFaceBren  2 роки тому +4

      @@harrycox16 I just read this a few days after writing it, in a more "awake" frame of mind and even though I wrote it, I was struggling to read it. I couldn't bear to look at it till now. I remember writing it, but that's it. Pontificating at its most pont. I'm here two days later to clean up typos and i ended up adding more.
      Somebody stop me!
      Take it from an old man and lifelong comedy fan (evident by my video inserts of Hope & Crosby & Abbott & Costello etc): Scott Aukerman is a comedy GOD. The weird thing is (and he’s commented on this himself), no one knows who he is, though he’s packed out theatres throughout the USA, Canada, Australia and the UK and his podcast is one of the most popular in the world. Talk about CBB bump! My channel has just passed 9k subscribers. In January 2020 it had 1.7k. Prior to that I had made a few CBB videos, mainly audio edits and a few “re-imagined”, but early last year I made my Thomas Middleditch video and it took off and I enjoyed making it, my viewers probably enjoyed it more than the later ones, because it's pretty basic, without much contribution from myself.
      Then fucking COVID hit and making CBB videos became a way to kill endless hours of solitary lockdown and the show kept me laughing and the lockdown and the laughing and the grog (Aussie for alcohol) and staying up till way after 4.20 making these videos kind-of sent me loopy and that state of mind began to show itself in my videos and (some) people enjoyed that part of them too and, as they say, you shouldn't encourage, because I did more of that and I'm loving it and I'm feeling at my most creative at a time when I've GOT time and no need for it to be successful, which is the most freeing situation to be in, creatively, but now, this part of my diatribe is a leap into the future, when I am supposed to be just fixing the typos, so I'll get Thomas back on track.
      A lot of people around the world, but mostly Yanks as we Aussies affectionately call Americans (or used to when I was a kid, so sorry if it upsets) who were also needing a diversion during lockdown got a lot from my videos too. And the subscriptions kept climbing, and I was getting comments like “you are doing the Lord’s work” which I laughed or scoffed at and (now take this from a guy who has been up WAY past 4.20 and learned yesterday he has at least another week in lockdown - added 9/4 THREE MORE WEEKS), I started to think recently that maybe I AM doing the Lord’s work. I spent some of my youth as a Born Again (hand clapping, speaking in tongues variety) and though I drifted, I still have a belief and if you've ever noticed my preoccupation with coincidence, that's part of a spiritual side that sometimes (especially around 4.20) feels like everything's connected and when I am putting together, say, a Time Keeper video and find that several episodes reference James Bond, when the music I had chosen for the end credits "Goldfinger" scanned with "Time Keeper", I get a bit of a chill.
      So, I do sometimes get to thinking, maybe in a tiny way, I AM doing the Lord's work, but like any pastor, I am just a conduit between the comedy God and his followers. UA-cam is my pulpit, CBB my bible, Maxwell and Todd and Jarles and Jason books within it. This stuff, this silly, stupid stuff, has really helped people.
      And the common thing in all of the CBB vids?
      Scotty Auks. Of course there would be no show without him and he has a talent that is far greater than being funny, which he is in my book (just not as much as the others WHO ARE THERE TO BE FUNNY, duh!).
      Scott can spot (see Scott spot?) comedic talent in its infancy, long before others find a comic funny and, fucking genius that he is, he created a platform to present that talent to THE WORLD.
      Hello? Australia here!
      So now, if you are still reading (I congratulate you on your diligence) you should appreciate why I call Scotty Auks a comedy god. But I also appreciate him because he's just plain silly and gets off on comedy. I saw someone refer to dedicated CBB fans as "comedy nerds". Kind-of insulting, but I'll take it. I figure that applies to Scott too and I doubt he takes life too seriously and when he's giggling as he waits for Al A. Peterson to tell the clumsy portmanteau story AGAIN, that's great, because that's what we are doing too. Scott is just representing us, incredulous at the crazies taking advantage of his open door policy and finding them just as funny as we do.
      And there are CBB comparisons to comedy greats that have me thinking the classic CBB routines like Bob Ducca's ailments, or the clumsy portmanteau will still be laughed at in 80 years, just like people still get a laugh from "Who's on First", which goes back even further (the 1940's was just the film version). I'm always getting comments about how many times people listen to the same CBB bits over and over, just like the Abbott and Costello routine. Recall the first time you heard Bob Ducca's "Scabies, rabies, Mickey Rooney Sugar Babies". A friend of mine heard that and later on wanted me to play it to his friend. That's two people who had never heard of Seth Morris or CBB or even a fucking podcast. I imagine that's what hearing "Who’s On First" would've been like the first time. The difference is, you can't hear it again. Not back then. You had to wait ans still, that routine went on to become legendary, laughed at (when it became possible) by those forties' folk for the rest of their lives, as well as their kids and their kids. So, how popular, how immortal is something as funny as CBB #300 going to fare if it's accessible all the time?
      OK, you're saying, but that's not Scott, that's Andy Daly or Horatio Sanz or Bobby Moynihan being funny. They'll be the ones who will be immortal, not Scott. Sure there's the obvious answer, no platform, no Bob Ducca, but I also counter with Scott's brilliance as straight man, questioning the weird and wonderful open-door opportunistic weirdos we all love, coaxing their ridiculous stories that gives us the CBB we love. Think of that first Andy Daly appearance. He arrived as Danny Mahoney, with his prepared story, probably nervous as hell and Scott could've just let Andy do his thing and asked questions that Andy expected him to ask and it would've been funny, but Scott, genius that he is, went a whole other way and the rest is history. As he has said, it's that episode, that moment when he threw Andy (for hilarious results) that CBB found a format.
      When improv was a "NEW" thing in the 90s, going to watch "Theatre Sports" was a popular thing for maybe a year until everyone was doing it and everyone ain’t good. So it died and around then the UK “Whose Line is it Anyway” revived improv for wider consumption than (formerly) smoky dives and a few years later, the Yanks stole that format from the Brits too ;-)
      I tired of it when Drew and co were doing it. Not to put them down. Props. Very funny and I have home-made DVDs of clips from the show. Robin Williams was on a few. But after a while it was “same old same old” as far as improv went, until, well, you know! Scott re-invented improv (if someone did it with a podcast before him props to them, I'm not aware) and it's made improv popular.
      I know some fools are still thinking “yeah but he would be nothing without PFT or Lapkus or Zouks”, not true.
      Adomian? Adomian? Bueller?
      I love the CBB fam-ill-ee but I am glad they are making names for themselves in other areas because their CBB success is really Scott’s success and he kind-of owns it. I don't mean he owns the episodes but their popularity on them, because its his show. And if any of those CBB guests were to read comments about them being more important to the show than Scott, I’m pretty sure they’d be unhappy about that, because not only do they respect and love him as a friend and colleague, they know they would be a lot less successful without him (he’s like George Bailey, you old building and loan).
      Whose name do people remember? PT Barnum or the amazing tightrope walker (or illusionist, or horseback acrobat) that the people flocked to see?

Even though Scott would've been planning it, there was nothing from him or Earwolf or Stitcher to let us punters know, which is a shame, because I can't afford the CBB World Stick-it-to-us Plan, but thankfully Stitcher Premium is ALSO worth the money. There's a new Bobby Moynihan podcast that's great and I'm discovering a lot of other great stuff plus the archives of HDTGM and Threedom and the rest and even still quite a bit of Bang Bang, but thanks for the review, glad you are enjoying it and I'm sure it will do well.

Join my Patreon if you want to contact me and I'll refund the five bucks. In case you haven't noticed, I'm something of an iconoclast (and shit-stirrer) myself.

    Dear Bren. What is "A DISTON? SURE!" supposed to mean. Is it some kind of pun. I have enjoyed this video multiple times and I have yet to understand its title at all. Okay thanks. Bye.

    • @BabyFaceBren
      @BabyFaceBren  2 місяці тому +2

      Up till then I’d done a Daly and a Lapkus and a Big Chunky Bubbles and a Jarles etc etc and because a lot of people had asked for a Diston, I made one, so the title is saying to them “A Diston? Sure!” (also, just before I started making this, a novel was published that I kept hearing about, called “A Distant Shore”😉)

      You could, if my Patreon patrons would vote for it. It's been an option for 3 months now, but instead you got - "Would You Rather" and Shaun Diston (and I can let you in on a little secret... they didn't vote for it for September either, but it always gets 2nd place so maybe in October!)
