While I understand that she speaks from the viewpoint of a woman, to me as a man, this is perhaps one of the most relatable love songs any rapper has ever written. The reflection. The admittance of naivety and the "hurt people hurt people" vicious cycle. The finding of self. The acceptance of scars. Thank you, Jean.
Seriously. I honestly like her more than most Male rappers .that's not saying much though, rappers are like twee indie pop bands; they're a dime a dozen and most of em are unremarkable. This one is special though imo
@@otherstuff649 she's not just that. I'd say she's *also* that, because both apply. I agree with your sentiment though. A highly underrated artist. It's really a fucking shame how so many female artists (especially in rap and hip hop music) go unnoticed and become marginalized She's such a good lyricist and, personally, I love her monotone delivery.
Oh I was talking to @Marcus Reeves -- it sucks reading through the comments and the ONLY thing is "wow what a dope female MC, nicki who? Cardio who?" Like there can only be one kind of woman who raps. She's an incredible storyteller, rapper, and so to limit what she's doing to being the best for half of the population is so weird. What she does is better than what most MCs do. I agree she's light years ahead of most other male rappers (and in fact last year I started called men who rap "male rappers" just to point out how silly it sounds when we break up rappers by gender. Who would ever call Nas or Tupac their favorite male rapper? nobody! They're simply people's favorite rappers. I just wish things would change in this regard. Lol as u can see I feel very passionate about it.
@@otherstuff649 it's a good thing to be passionate about! I knew who you were responding to, I'm passionate about art in general and what you are talking about as well. I'm kinda just butting in. I apologize. I do refer to artists as female or Male though, at least when they are musicians/musical artists *and* vocalists. Just because there are such big differences in the vocals between most men and women's voices. I tend to prefer female vocals over male but this is obviously not always the case. But I also think of my favorite vocalists in the way that you are speaking of. I honestly think it's partially to do with how much I enjoy making categories and lists lol.
Most "rappers" spit words to a beat. What Jean did here was glide over it. So smooth, so dope. She found a way to make a painful song beautiful. Classic.
It's still a love song. The inner struggles of a hopeless romantic who is trying to find the balance between self love and the fairy tale love. Been one of my favorites for a long time.
One of the most beautifully written rap songs ever. The way she subtly switched from speaking in the third person at the start of the song to first person by the end, which helps signify her coming to peace with all the heartbreak. Amazing. A masterpiece of a record
she better than a lot of these trash rappers out right now.Want a few. migos, lil uzi, young thug, future, french montana, rick ross, who could name more but thats it, for now. This was just off the head.
She should be up there with the greats in terms of exposure, her lyrics and story telling are top notch. Really surprised that no major label took a chance with her and gave her freedom to do whatever to make the record.
@@perrysaunders331 I know this was meant in good nature, but it seems weird if Jean would've signed with Cole. Love his work very much, but people rarely fuck with his artists like they fuck with him and he pushes all of them. That being said, I imagine she's comfortably well off. I do get the sentiments though, of a major label that would ACTUALLY not restrict her creativity.
This lady’s mind is amazing. To even conceive these words put them down and vocalise them in flawless hip hop bar form is just nothing short of impressive!
As a fellow artist, I definitely love how real she is. Tired of the "new" style rap. Not gonna knock all new music. But Grae always comes with stories and substance.... #lesleyg.bandcamp.com #nohiddenagendas
janie johnson Greezy is low-key; other artists already know it would be game over for them to even attempt to. & if she eats them alive, all she'll do is shit out a pebble.
I know right......(jean looks kinda tall....wonder how tall she is.....wonder if my obsession is unhealthy).....jean should guest star on Akward black girl......
Stop saying best female rapper when shes better then most dude MC's. My Top 5 when it comes to the pen. Not saying she can make a hit album. But she unmatched when it comes to her imagery.
Dam THe more I listen to Jean Grae , realised she is truly Dynamic Denouement Eloquence & magical Epeolatry def in my top 10 female rappers!🔥🔥🔥 .. RESPECT.
This has been one of my favorite hip-hop songs for the past 7 or 8 years and I never get tired of it. Such an amazing song. I wish Jean would get more credit for her music. She deserves it.
This is a prime example of how hip hop and its practitioners sit in a strange, special place in between poetry and music. When the writing hits on all cylinders as on this song, shifting perspectives at ease, the creative license she gives herself to contradict, the stark relatability by telling a specific story- this is what this fucking genre is about. This album is a gift to Hip-Hop

ConcaCon Werd up 💯!
I'd go farther than that. its one of the best songs in hip hop history.
This shit was dope. and she SPIT that shit hard as hell.
4 sure 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Agreed!!!!!
DA MOST UNDERRATED FEMALE MC IN DA LAST 30 YEARS.
Seriously. I honestly like her more than most Male rappers .that's not saying much though, rappers are like twee indie pop bands; they're a dime a dozen and most of em are unremarkable. This one is special though imo
Why do you have to qualify it though? She's just one of the most underrated MCs period.

It kills me how underrated Jean Grae is. She is truly one of the best... love her.
One of the most beautifully written rap songs ever. The way she subtly switched from speaking in the third person at the start of the song to first person by the end, which helps signify her coming to peace with all the heartbreak. Amazing. A masterpiece of a record
I couldn’t agree with you more. The best also complements her lyrics so well. It’s a whole vibe in itself.
Jean Grae is definitely keeping hip hop alive

Ugh I hate how I can’t find this version on any platform other than here
She should be up there with the greats in terms of exposure, her lyrics and story telling are top notch. Really surprised that no major label took a chance with her and gave her freedom to do whatever to make the record.
I wish J. Cole had sign her to his Record Label. I would love to see her and Rapsody hook up or Black Thought/Questlove.

Why is she not well known. The music industry is scared of originality,
Her name rings bells

Yes been waiting on a female mc like this
Jean Grae is underappreciated and rated. She, Sa-Roc, Jackie Hill Perry, and Rapsody. Taking a dump on anyone.
