It's not hard to share food items given as holiday gifts. But my family say I'm hard to buy for because I want and need so little! So finally i started given them a list of suggestions each fall when they asked. Like "I'm running low of coffee and scented candles and warm socks. But i still have several containers of teas and spices. And lots of body lotion. And money is always good too!"😊
I volunteer at a charity shop and have been told to brace for January as last year they were inundated with donations. She said they had so much gifted that they literally couldn't take any more until they had sorted through it all. Well done everyone 😊
Just wanted to thank you for your inspiration from a previous video. I said I was going to set up a whole school food bank collection. Well today we went to the food bank. We had a large trolley full of food and adults at the school gave me money. I phoned the food bank to find out what they were really short of. With the money I bought 300 nappies, 20 selection boxes and 15 packs of macaroni cheese. I took 3 students with me and it felt so good to give x
When we got married 32 years ago we had both been on our own for a number of years. Wedding gifts that were duplicate, or something we already had, we regifted as wedding gifts for those that got married later. We also let our moms each pick a gift of the excess, as a thank you for the help with our wedding. I was very careful not to regift within the same family. I love your idea of the food bank.
I keep notes on my IPad throughout the year of things that I might like as a gift - typically it is baking or gardening item that I don’t want to spend money on - and keep the list in a “shared” list so that anyone in my family can view it year round for any occasion. It’s easier for them and for me than saying “I don’t need anything”. It could be unusual flower seeds, a bread baking utensil, specific whisks for cooking, candle scents that I enjoy, simple inexpensive items that I can make do without but would make like a little more enjoyable. We donate gifts that are unopened and unused to the local charity that helps with the unhoused and low income people in our community and avoid the large scale thrift stores.
My daughter usually ends up with smelly gifts I used to get from coworkers all the time. One year, one of our exchange students gave me an expensive bottle of perfume. My daughter didn't like the smell of it. I ended up giving it to an old internet friend in Florida. People told me to sell it on Ebay, but that didn't seem right. Now I only get gifts from my grown kids. They ask me what I want and so I usually tell them something garden related. I also ask for specifics from them. That way there are no unwanted things given.
Books I pass on to our local library. They have book/magazine sales and the money helps the library. A friend's daughter works at a nursing home. Many residents are alone or forgotten and she likes to have things to give them to brighten their day so I pass gifts on to her.
Thank you for this video, very useful. I personally give immediately to a charity, a hospital, a shelter for the homeless. A small anecdote that makes you smile: my adorable and delicate mother-in-law (who suffered 2 wars ), received at Christmas a large ceramic cannon shell. Her eyes become a little blurry, her pale cheeks are a little rosy and she says softly "it’s convenient". I found the answer strange and my husband whispers in my ear "this word is the code to say she doesn’t like it, the family knows".
For a couple of years after we gave up drinking people would still give us bottles of wine so I would just regift them to someone else. If I get something I know I won't use I take it to my local charity shop.
Oh Jane! I’ve been regifting already recently received food gifts mostly chocolates, candles, and books! I regifted a live plant to an office coworker and she almost cried. Had I kept it - it would have just died anyway. I do pretty well with garden plants but am terrible with houseplants. I am careful with regifting but it has came in real handy!
My friend group never write on labels of gift bags so we can reuse them. We started a tradition last year of writing our name on the gift bag inside, then whoever gives it away next time writes their name. We want to see how many times we reuse them.
As a teacher, I received many items I could not use. I regifted to others or gave to thrift shops. I have lowered gifts to 5 immediate family members and my daughter's long-time boyfriend. I have 2 friends who mailed me a gift. Next year, I will tell one I want to either do a wanted gift card or no gift. One lady is 90 years old and she is like a mother to me so I will exchange gifts her. I have told 2 friends I want to discontinue gifts. One send me a small ornament anyway. I thanked her but do not plan to mail her a gift. I hope she gets the hint. At 70 plus, I do not want to collect more, I am decluttering. I do not wish food gifts as we have diet restrictions and food may go in the trash. Thanks for your ideas.
We drive our elderly friends for free whenever they need to go anywhere that requires highway driving or Doctor appointments. They gave us gift cards to a local restaurant they receive from their pharmacy every 10 prescriptions they fill. We are giving them to our next door neighbors who do not know them and can use a break from cooking.
Thank you for all your frugal advice. I take everything I don't need or use to a local charity shop, if I do buy something, I then return it if not needed again. ❤
My daughter got me a large rice cooker that i would never have purchased myself. I love it now that I gave it a try. I ended up buying a small one to use for the 2 of us.
I do the same with everything I don’t use, new or older, I first ask my friends and family if they want it and if not I put it on the bench down in the apartment building where I live. I live in a big building with about 62 other apartments and it’s Social Rental so there are lots of people that can use it. Normally it’s gone within a few hours. If I buy something in a shop and it’s 2 for the price of 1 and I don’t use it that much I will also put that on the bench, like a sun protector cream for example. I’m also quite allergic myself so it can also be shower cream if they changed the consistency. Someone is always happy with it.
My sister-in-law was going to be called Gigi when she became a grandmother so I gave her a large tumbler that said Gigi. Then her son, the baby's dad, was opposed to that name. When I became a Grandma, I became Gigi. So my sister-in-law regifted the tumbler to me and I use it on a daily basis. I really appreciated the regifting!😃
the schools in our town accept our unwanted gifts that people in need can go shop for free at the schools. kids get to work hard and with earn points to get gifts for their family. and people in need can come get for their kids. there might be programs like that around you.
I usually offer the gift to someone in my church's whatsapp group, but if I get anything that I could sell, I will try to do that and put the money towards something I or the kids need.
My brother gave me a lovely jar of vintage sweet shop sweets last year ,I was never going to eat them so I gifted them to my sister but told her to keep them in a cupboard 😂
Strategic regifting is a wonderful way to handle unwanted/duplicate gifts!

I generally give away or donate unwanted gifts so that someone will be able to use the items.❤
I always ask my mom or sister in law if they want items like scented candles , body cremes. I do not want to waste it. Usually they want them

A very kind and thoughtful process to share with others 😊💜
Absolutely!!
Thanks, good ways to deal with it. I am enjoying and getting spoiled, getting to see you all everyday.
Our pleasure!

We often get given wine, neither of us drink it, we donate it as raffle prizes
I donated or garage sale any item that I did not want in a past life. A list is our go in family. Makes life easier. Thanks.

I love that. When my family still did gifts, we used to reuse the gift bags for years, we just added a new tag on a piece of string

Everyone is a winner
Have cleared most of the loft out ,many gifts not used so gone to Marie Curie and as you say someone will be able to use them
It'll be useful to someone

Re gift. Lol but not relatives that may show the one that gave it to you to begin with😂😂😂
I'm sorry, this is off of the subject. However, I'm curious...I see three doggies! I thought you only had two. They are so adorable.
