Why you SHOULD NOT hike MOUNT BATUR, Bali

  • In this video I am gonna tell you why you should not hike Mount Batur in Bali. People do not share the reality of this place and I am here to do so.
    This is the most known hike in the island and many people share this as being a magical and life changing experience but they forget to share the problems of this hike. Mount Batur is considered sacred to the locals and they use this as an excuse to treat this place as the most commercial hike I have ever seen.
    They tell you It is mandatory to hike with a guide and pay the entrance fee. If you ask them anything about it or try to hike without a guide they become agressive, sometimes even physically like with my boyfriend (he was just asking how it worked). They will tell you wrong directions of the trail and much more.
    They say they do it because of the sacredness of the mountain but what they are doing is basically turning Mount Batur into a commercial site where you don't see or feel the real sacredness at all.
    The hike is packed. You are with more than a thousand people in an endless line going up to the volcano. The quietness, contact with nature and calm that you usually get from a hike are interrupted by all the groups with loud music, locals trying to sell their stuff and being pushy. Renting blankets, bracelets, food. It is basically a mall on a mountain.
    I am happy to pay for entrance fees, guide if necessary or anything like that if it is being done in a fair and proper way where they actually protect the sacredness that they talk so much about. Where they actually protect nature, clean the mountain which also does not happen.

    Went up mount batur today and it was amazing. Wasn’t busy at all for sunrise, my guide was amazing and made us local food and had a hot chocolate on top. We got given equipment for the climb i.e head torch and walking stick. No one was pushy with trying to sell anything, everyone was lovely. Your guide was young and had plenty of information. A lot of the guides do this to earn extra money before they head off to school so that’s why some go fast. I appreciate their hustling to help their family. Scenery was beautiful. My only tip would be to try and avoid peak summer, get a tour guide and don’t be judgemental about the locals trying to support their families.

    So given your experience, I can relate to your frustrations however it seems to vary on season. I hiked in Dec 2022 and there were max less than 100 people on the mountain and it was a great experience

      Thank you for sharing your experience! The problem is not only being too crowded. It is the mafia around it, the way they treat hikers, there are a few links in the description with other people’s experience. If you went with a pre booked guide you probably don’t see this problem but it’s quite known the mafia around it and that’s the main problem 😢

    We went here today and the views were breathtaking. I agree that they dont allow you to do the hike without a guide. Bali completely relies on its tourist for economy. The way I see this is by hiring a guide you are just helping a person meet his needs. Also, the country was struggling massively during COVID when the borders were closed so no hatm in contributing to boost their economy.

    Yups... you're right. I've climbed last month. Too many people climbing at the same time, sometimes it becomes like a traffic jam, everyone stops walking because those above us stop walking. Sometimes the ways are also narrow and steep, only can walk by 1 person. If they stop walking, so everyone at the back will also stop

    Why is it that people are amazed to see sunrise and sunsets when on vacation? Can't you see that at home by just setting your alarm early. We did the 3 am tourist drive to Mt. Bromo to view the sunrise. The sunrise wasn't dramatic since a ridge blocked the view. The fog doesn't lift down in the caldera until 9 am. I was more amazed by all the classic Toyota Land Cruisers the guides drive, collected from all over the archipelago.

    • @lolopop76
      @lolopop76 2 місяці тому

      We had such an epic sunrise on Mount Batur and the fog moved and swayed as the sun rose above the horizon. It was amazing. The day wasn't hazy yet so we could see all the way to Lombok and the Gilis. The soft lighting of golden hour also makes for the best photos. It is hit or miss though, I've definitely had some poor sunrises here and there, but when they go off, man do they make for amazing memories and muses for photography.

    @travelwithrafa totally understand your situation. We went through the same today. Although the place is really beautiful and amazing, it's completely commercialised. Groups with loud music, trekking guides who are pushy and demotivates you to opt for motorbike. Trekking guide rushed us and we couldn't complete the full length of the crater

    Hiked at sunset in April and there was literally nobody but us and the guide. Guide was funny and friendly. The track was in a terrible condition (probably deterioriated since you hiked it), if you sprain your ankle there is potentially no one to render you assistance other than the guide. As for the people trying to hustle .. welcome to Asia...

    This wasn’t my experience. It was maybe 60 people on my hike. Not that many. I will say I definitely needed a guide. I wouldn’t have made it if it wasn’t for him. He was so sweet and patient with me because I did have to stop and rest a few times. He provided food for free for our group and we took our time. Sorry your experience wasn’t that good.

    Just went to mount Batur, I had an amazing experience, we got lucky and we had an amazing view. Our guide was helpful and we went into our own group pace, we had a lots of stops. I totally agreed a good solution would be to involve the government to have benefits for tourist, locals and the environment. That being said probably Indonesia has bigger problems to solve first, at this moment this seems to be a white people problem. For the time being I do not care to get overcharged if that means locals are getting a benefit.
    PS. I really enjoyed your video, keep going!

    This is the reality of Mount Batur. I did the Mt.Batur hike a month ago. I paid an entry fee of 100k. And the lady at the counter asked for 450k for a guided tour and wouldn't let me do it alone. I told her i was an experienced hiker and i wouldn't pay her and do the hike with a guide and stood in the corner thinking about driving back home.

    • @Arjunkification
      @Arjunkification 8 місяців тому +1

      And after a white couple were allowed to climb after they paid some 500k in total. I went to the lady and told her i was a Hindu and i was from and i wouldn't behave disrespectfully and only then she let me do the hike alone. And yeah the locals living the foothills do give you wrong directions. I took a much harder route and got lost several times, but wading through bushes hiking on the scar made by the volcano was cool and stupid at the same time and eventually i would find the actual path though. I also don't think these supposed guides won't take you on the actual hard trekking route and i say this because it wasn't that easy for me climbing uphill even after finding a proper route. I think i climbed 3 peaks in a row on that day and im one of the fittest at my mma gym, and this mountain had me rethinking my decisions lol. But i made it to the top and yeah sometimes you just try making it harder for yourself ha ha

    Trust me , opt for a guide for your safety over privacy . Opt for commercialization over solitude in a foreign country where chances of being robbed and raped are high. And go to non- tourist trails and places if u really wanna be soaked alone in nature mysticism( provided they are safe for foreigners)

    great objective video but unfortunately since the end of the pandemic what was already a bad trend of overpricing place every where in Bali has just become a nightmare where now even free access to beaches become almost impossible . If they keep on visitor will be fed up of paying for every step they do during their trip and will go to another destination

    I hiked up Batur in February with an amazing guide, who did not rush us. I also made a new friend, a Turkish guy that was in our pickup van from our hotel. I really enjoyed the experience, it is not a technical hike. Sounds like the presenter here chose the wrong guide and suffered for it. Just because you have a bad experience, this does not sum up the experiences that others have, and certainly no reason to make a video that narrow-mindedly assumes all experiences are similar.
