  • Hey guys it’s Whit with NatureHills.com. The dog days of summer can be unbearably hot but they don’t have to be unbearably boring in the garden. At least not if you have a few daylilies sprinkled in. Daylilies are known for the wide array of colors they come in and their prolific summer blooms that stay showy for months.
While trying to come up with an assortment to talk about here today, I decided I also needed an honorable mentions because 5 just isn’t enough to even crack the surface of beautiful daylilies. So if none of our top 5 fit your fancy, I suggest checking out Little Business, Storm Shelter, Pardon Me, or Strawberry Candy Daylily.
    5. Rainbow Rhythm Orange Smoothie Daylily
Listen, you know this list is going to rock when fifth place looks as good as Rainbow Rhythm Orange Smoothie. Like the other Daylilies in the Rainbow Rhythm lineup, Orange Smoothie has two-toned blooms that stand on strong stems. Unlike some other varieties, Orange Smoothie blooms once at the beginning of summer and again later in the season. This variety is fragrant, attracts butterflies, and works great for mass plantings. #5 Rainbow Rhythm Orange Smoothie Daylily - Growing zones 3-9, salt and poor soil tolerant, and gorgeous orange and yellow flowers.

    4. Primal Scream Daylily
Primal Scream is a classically orange variety with 8-9 inch long slimmer, ruffle-edged petals that helped it bag the 2003 Stout Medal. The blooms sit on top of lush green foliage that’s attractive in the spring even before the flower power really gets going. Plant in a sunny spot out front by the street or along the driveway for an easy-to-care-for pop of color. #4 Primal Scream Daylily - Growing zones 3-9, adept at thriving in many climates, and huge orange blooms.

    3. Going Bananas Daylily
Going Bananas will have you doing just that when it blooms in the summer. This Proven Winners Variety loves the sun and tolerates urban air pollutants and poor soil like a champ. It’ll grow just about anywhere and with its bright yellow blooms, you’ll want to plant it everywhere. Going Bananas blooms almost continuously throughout the summer into the early fall. Pair it with an orange variety to complete a fiery color pallet or with a purple for contrast. #3 Going Bananas Daylily - Growing zones 3-9, sun-loving, fragrant, and attracts pollinators.

    2. Purple de Oro Daylily
Deviating from the oranges and yellows talked about so far, we have Purple de Oro Daylily. Like the name suggests, Purple de Oro is a purple flowering variety with a yellow throat that famously blooms from the beginning of summer to the end in many regions. It’s the sister plant to Stella do Oro and I suggest planting them together for a gorgeous contrasting perennial bed. #2 Purple de Oro Daylily - Growing zones 2-9, extremely cold hardy, and great in containers.

    1. Chicago Apache Daylily
The number 1 spot goes to Chicago Apache for being such a looker while also offering considerable disease resistance, plenty of nectar for the pollinators, and being able to thrive in harsh conditions that would wither other perennial plants. Plant now and in 3-4 years you’ll be able to divide and give to your friends (or keep filling up your own garden!). Thick, ruffled red petals bloom from a green heart and stay vibrant throughout the hot summer days. #1 Chicago Apache Daylily - growing zones 3-9, easy to care for, fast-growing, and has gorgeous red blooms.
