Reducing standards sounds like a way to destroy world class universities’ reputations

They should take the best. And if they have to help kids of working class parents, they need to do that. And that needs to happen, regardless of the color of the child's skin. It HAS to be merit based.

All the hard work in the world will not earn a working class child entry to Oxbridge if the school they are attending is basically a failure factory. More resources must be put into state schools to ensure that all children have a level playing field from a very early age to compete with private school-educated children.
Entry into Oxbridge should not be dependent largely on how much money one's parents can put into a quality primary and secondary education. That is less about merit and more about privilege.

They don't have a clue what they are talking about. If the 7% who are applying from private schools make 25% of those who were admitted, private school kids are at a great advantage. There is a huge discrimination against public school kids. I don't understand how they can discuss this without checking the numbers.

Sorry but the differences in opportunities that State and Private education provide are just massive. We need to fix the primary and secondary education system first

It should be based on academic accomplishment.

Have you actually tried getting a decent job without a degree nowadays. Its not impossible but its a heck of a lot harder especially when so many have a degree.

@@lone8869 have you tried getting a job with no experience?
I think it depends on your definition of a good job, or how many degree holders have jobs that don’t require or reflect any degree.
It’s a big debt now, and not such a great return.

This isn't about racial diversity for those of you up in the pants.
This is about Income diversity, children from lower-middle or working class backgrounds.

As long as everyone gets the same opportunity when applying then its ok, if they meet the requirements, but what we end up with is a population that only the better off get the best education, the best opportunities, so the
People at the top of society come from the same classes over and over again but restricting anyone from any background who can meet the best should be able to attend

If all the bright students choose a different university to aim for it'll eventually become the new Oxford. If woke Oxford starts to take less gifted students its reputation will eventually get trashed, let them get on with it.

If Oxbridge aren't very careful with this their standard of students will begin to drop dramatically leading to a downfall in their reputation. If private school students stop believing that Oxbridge take only the best based on academic merits then the other good universities will be upgraded by these students whilst Oxbridge will plummet

well...if you don't choose each application on its merit....you have just sown the seeds for mediocrity. Being global centre's of excellence, meritocracy must be the only qualifying criteria. if the qualifying applicant comes from the lower income families, supplement his admission with full fee waivers.
