Thanks for the overwhelming response to this video, as well as our other videos on The Real Gunsmith Channel! We appreciate your comments and questions. Due to the volume of the comments and questions, some which would take some time to answer, we just don’t have the time to respond to them all. However many of the questions will be answered in future videos.
Our first priority is to our paying clients. Writing out long answers would take time away from that, and I won’t put them “on hold” to post long answers here.
If you have questions about getting gun work done or a custom rifle built, contact us at randyselby@randyscustomrifles.com. I have a wide range of prices for custom rifles so even the “average Joe or Josephine” can get into a custom package, just as accurate as the higher end rifles.
For our detractors, we appreciate your difference of opinion, too, but I stand by my decades of experience.
To all of you, thanks again for your overwhelming support. Stay tuned! God bless you all. Randy and Cathy
What ever happened to the old Cone-Trol patent? Those worked pretty good I heard,Mr. Selby
As a younger reloader and a gun enthusiast I really enjoy what you teach. The world needs more true people as your self. KEEP BEING AWESOME
We hope UA-cam keeps your channel for us to learn about what you show. Thanks good show
Finally a real gun maker. From start to finish. A rare and honest man.
I continuously watch your videos when in travel for work around the country, currently im in the process of developing my first load its for a rem 280. Thanks for all the time taken to share with us what youve learned over the years, cheers
This man knows his craft. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. It’s helping me to develop loads for my rifles.
This month is my sixtieth anniversary as a handloader. I started in August 1963, just before starting the third grade, a few months before they shot Kennedy. All those years but I am still learning, thanks to Mr. Selby!
I do hope people are thanking you for this information you just can't get this knowledge any more. thanks
From Cathy, his wife: They are, MD_Outdoors. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Oh, there are some naysayers, but there always are. The views, subscribers and positive comments far outweigh them, though. Randy and I are honored and flattered. He had a call early this morning. A man that had been shown the videos but doesn't have a computer. He had one question of how to do something which Randy answered. And then the man told him how much the videos meant to him. His feed back, a long email of appreciation the other day from a viewer, your comments and more are, truly, uplifting and encouraging. [The email can be seen on testimonial page of our website, randyscustomrifles.com or therealgunsmith.com] Thanks! Also, a quick, much deserved thanks to Bryon Worthen of Ravenhawk Media who said, "We need to get this knowledge out there!" For believing in Randy and for having the know-how and talent to make it all happen we both thank him. This wouldn't be possible without him. And we have a new friend. Finally, Randy gets a bit chocked up about all of this. and I know he thanks you and all from his heart! It's been a few crazy days and he's not been able to answer much of the comments, as he has to take care of paying clients. But he has conveyed all of what I said, above, to me about how he feels. Thanks again!
There are certain truths in the shooting world and the world of reloading that always remain the same. I enjoy your videos because they bridge the gap between knowledge and wisdom. Like many things that are changing rapidly these days, it is not only knowledge gained from experience that is being lost, but the wisdom of how to use that knowledge. I hope a great many younger shooters and reloaders find your videos so they can benefit from your insight.
Thank you for these video's. I've been reloading since I was 11 years old(40 years ago). I've never mic'd cases to determine pressure...but I will start. Thanks again.
I very much enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for taking time to make them.
Thanks Randy, for the info being shared.
Wow, what a nice rifle. Pretty much my dream rifle.
Thank you for another excellent video.
That B&L spotting scope is a jewel too !
Voice of experience.
Sir, I learned much of what you are teaching from Jim Carmichael. Your presentations are excellent, and I am learning much more from you. Thank you.
You had a good teacher.
Very nice
I have the same spotting scope setup!
Thanks again for your videos.
some good info on your process. im currently workng a load for my vangaurd in .300 whby mag 30" mcgowan barrel 1:10 twist using 200 gr. eld-x and retumbo
I wonder about a 7mm bullet in a 300 win mag case? I'm sure someone tried it long ago. I had a Model 70, 300 Win mag that took me several loads and years to learn how to shoot well. What a rifle. Thanks again. Gerald.
The 7MM-.300 Win was done years ago, it's a good cartridge. I've done these for clients over the years. Thanks for your comments. Good shooting!
Legend great vewing
I've went from 300 elevation to 1900 elevation and with a 308 winchester firing a 150 grain bullet at 2800 fps has a point of impact difference of 2 inches. I've seen a man trying to hit a mule deer that was trotting off at only a touch over 200 yards downhill 4 times at 9500 elevation after sighting in at 1900. It pays to always check your zero with your new elevation environment that you are hunting.
Years ago I worked up a load for my 270 that would drive nails at 300 yrds I thought that was great but after shooting the first deer at 360 yrds I was not impressed the bullet blew up like a hollow point so back to the drawing board I went. I settled on a little less accuracy but I have a bullet that has pennatration
Excellent
Gosh! Wish I found your chanel a year ago, I could listen to you all day. What's your thoughts on Browning actions? I've always had good luck with Browning rifles. I'd so love to have one of your rifles. Great video content, thanks so much for sharing.
You said that those were the first three rounds out of the rifle. What is your opinion on barrel break in? Very nice rifle I own winchesters and I like the looks of them. I hope there is a follow up with that rifle to see what your final discovery was/is.
First 3 shots from a clean barrel to point out that the 1st, 2nd and 3rd round were inn the group. In developing a load I may shoot many rounds. A good barrel, with load work up, proper cleaning will be properly broke in.
Another terrific video. Thanks so much, Randy. Please continue these as your schedule will allow. One quick question. What is your experience with the long action belted magnums (264 WM, 7 RM, 300 WM etc.) as far as primers go? Do you usually use magnum primers or start with the CCI, Fed or Remington non-magnum?
Thanks Gary O'Neal. For these three cartridges standard LR primers are sufficient, as well as the 215 Federal and 250 CCI. I will always try several of each to arrive at what works best. Good shooting!
I shoot a .264 winchester and a 30-338 Win mag. I personally use magnum in them because it gives you a hotter spark to ignite large amounts of powder. In my 30-338 I even use Federal Match Magnum primers. I have found that changing primers change accuracy of the round. Some people even use magnum primers in non magnum rounds. That is when you have a compressed round. If you worked up a load with a non magnum primer and want to change it to a magnum primer drop your grains of powder and rework the load. The primers can give different pressure readings. This is what i have found in my experience. I hope he answers your question I'm curious on what he says.
Guys who’s watching this video Mr. Randy rebelled my 300 weatherby Mag and develop a load for it that shoots in same hole all day long.
Thanks! We appreciate the comment. Good shooting!
Good morning Sir, on the micrometer , do both ends have ball attachments? Thank you for your time.......
Jim
Randy, do you recommend glass bedding a rifle action on a HS Precision Stock which already has an aluminum block?
Yes, Bobby Mat. Always properly bed for top accuracy. No bedding block mates properly to the barrel, only a bedding done correctly.
Thanks for your response, Randy.
Mr. Selby, great video.. I’m loading a 338 win mag. I’ve found my 225 gr loads. Could you recommend a great powder for 250 gr loads. Hoping to reach accurate 2700 FPS in 24” barrel. Thanks
Go to any good reloading manual and start there, work up gradually. Always try different combinations. As I have said, just because a certain load combo works well in one rifle, all things the same otherwise, does not mean it will work well in the next. So it is a matter of patience, trial. Write down each combo and the results, use a chronograph.
Good luck and good shooting!
TRG have you ever built a barrel tuner for any of your big bore rifles? I have been testing with them from my rimfire to .223, to .308 and they all will react to weight movement at the muzzle. Just a thought... G.
Where exactly are you measuring the case with your ball micrometer on say a 25-06 case? On case just above rim? My eyes are not very good and I cannot see exactly where your measuring for .0005 expansion. Thx
The solid portion of the head, immediately ahead of he extractor groove by 1/32 of an inch.
Thanks for watching.
@@TheRealGunsmith Thank you for that
Would you please explain barrel cleaning when working up loads. Just a friendly argument between me and a buddy.
I clean every 3 rounds. Who wins?
Thanks for watching.
He does I clean after 5. Appreciate your input
Hi Randy. Do you start working up a load with new brass, or once fired?
New brass. Good shooting!
Me, Selby I have a Remington model 700 varmint special made in 1975 it shoots 1/2 to 3/4 inch groups with the best groups I have worked up for it but for some reason they always want to horizontal string. The Rifle isn’t bedded , by a any chance could you give me a couple of hints to what might cause this? I am sure the groups would tighten up if I could find what’s causing it to do this. Thank you for all of your knowledge.
It needs bedded as the recoil lug is not square in the stock. And barrel free floated.
How do you feel about these new ultra light rifles? When we sheep hunt up here in alaska ounces count and some of these new production rifles are 5.5 pounds. Can you make something like that?
Or do you feel like that is beyond the threshold for shooting medium hunting cartridges?
I can make most anything rifle wise. From experience the barrel needs to be a contour that does not sacrifice weight for accuracy. Rifles below 6 1/2 lb without scope are too light in the barrel area.
Send an email to me at randyselby@randyscustomrifles.com and I'll be glad to discuss this further with you. To keep YT from getting cranky, I don't discuss individual builds on this forum.
Thanks for watching.
Have you built any rifles on a Howa action? Very similar to a model 700, with a better extractor. Any opinions on the Howa's?
Yes, I have. Howa actions are excellent actions, far above Remington actions. They make a great custom rifle build base.
Thanks for saying that. Some people just about lose their mind if you say something bad about a Remington. lol
You are welcome. LOL, you may have noticed that I'd rather be honest about my experiences than worrying if I've hurt someone's feelings.
@@TexanUSMC8089 I'm not a big fan of the Remington 700, and I don't mind saying so.
I have an 300 whby mag with a lilja mk 13 1:10 twist barrel at 26 3/4" long chambered fairly standard saami with action squared and trued. I am shooting 185gr juggernaut with 85.5gr H1000 for target. Would you think that the 180 190 or 200gr nosler accubond would be good for deer and hogs out to 4 or 500yds? Or whould you think another load would be better I would like to know what you think
All that you mention wold be suited for your need.
Good shooting!
What is the brand of shooting bag rest are you using.?
Caldwell, front and rabbit ear rear bag.
Thanks for watching!
Randy, for a 6.5x55, would you recommend RL 22 as a good starting powder? Or do you have a tried and true that you would recommend.
Thank you.
RL 22 is the best.
Thanks for watching and Good shooting!
44 hrs of RE 19 140 Sie bullet shoots unreal in every Swede that I own.Start with max O.A.L.
Any load recommendations for the 300 H & H with 180gr bullets? Thanks!
IMR 4831, work up 1/2 gr at a time until you get accuracy.
Good shooting. May you and yours stay safe and well.
@@TheRealGunsmith Thanks IMR 4831 is what I've always used since 1993 in my 300 H & H. I recently tried RL 22 and had even better precision with 180 gr Nozler E-tips compared to IMR 4831.
You mentioned extending the COAL. My Vangaurd won't let me extend it.
After trying 2 different charge weights, you switch to a different bullet? That is not "working up" a load sir. Some of your info is very poor..
My 6.5 creedmore can shoot better then that
There is ONE in every crowd!!!!!
You are correct sir.
You are correct Scott in Ohio.
