  • On Christmas Day 1944, near Chaumont, Belgium, Private Paul Wiedorfer risked concentrated small-arms fire to destroy two enemy machine-gun nests, allowing his platoon to advance with the rest of the company. Wiedorfer received the Medal of Honor on May 29, 1945, while recuperating at Walter Reed Hospital for injuries sustained during a February 1945 mortar attack.
