      @@ApsaraMenaka I think i read speculation that banging in the flashback was from the ghost boy in the wheelchair. He supposedly does it to get his family's attention bc he can't walk, and thats why we hear a knee level dragging sound around the bedroom. It would make sense to show the ghost for a reason and not for a random scare.

    When Steve and Hugh were talking in the car I got chills when he said that the man fixing the clock wasn't real and the treehouse wasn't real. Besides episode 6, this episode and episode 9 are my favorites. I think people are still forgetting how betrayed Steve felt by his father. He found out that Olivia had bruises and a cracked skull from being pushed by their father. Then young Theo's vision in episode 3 showed Hugh pushing Olivia so the kids had a bit of a bad impression of him. That paired with him not being upfront about what happened contributes to why the kids, especially Steve treats him like this.

    To me, it’s ok to rationalize that Steve didn’t want to have kids bc he was afraid of passing on some bad genes or something. That’s cool. Get that. But the fact that he knowingly married a woman who wanted to have kids and never told her that he couldn’t. He went to doctors appointments with this woman and spent who knows how much money on treatments and I’m sure listened to her cry about not being able to get pregnant. He STILL never had the balls to tell her the truth. That to me says a lot about Steven as a person. Regardless of his fears, he should’ve been honest with her.

      @TheScorpio Vampyre I think they're both pretty horrible. Shirley and her self-righteousness knowing she had betrayed her husband, Steve with his inability to be forthcoming and acknowledge his errors/fears. He hurt so many people because he couldn't cope. Two sides of the same coin, if you ask me.

    • @pennywise6606

  • @CaptainPikeachu

    The thing with Steve and Shirley is they don't have the tragic backstories or the cool powers to make them the relatable sympathetic "heroes" that Nell, Luke, and Theo are. Steve and Shirley are the most like normal real people with their normal real problems and strengths and flaws. If we the audience were a part of this story, we are all more likely to be Steves and Shirleys than the younger three Crane kids. Steve grew up watching what is suppose to be the normalcy of his life descend into sudden madness because of what happened to his mother, and he was the old enough to pick up on noticing her problems, it makes perfect sense that he would see that as signs of mental illness because Olivia's behaviors are very much that, and if Steve never saw the ghosts or believed in it, it is no wonder that he would look at what he saw in his childhood as his mother's slow descent into mental illness. Shirley's childhood flashbacks show the birth of why she constantly seeks control and wants to fix things, her formative moments with the kittens and the body of her mother put her on that path of never wanting to lose control, never wanting to not fix things because to Shirley, losing all of that equates to those traumas of death and horror. Both of Steve and Shirley's behavior in the context of what they know and what they saw doesn't damage them in the sympathetic way that it may have done to how we see it manifest in Nell, Luke, and Theo, but the damages are still there. Remember that the kids were raised for all intents and purposes by their aunt, which meant Steve and Shirley, despite not knowing anything and their father refusing to communicate with them, have left them lost and damage and alone while they tried to fix and keep their families together. Their denial and resentment grow from having way too much put upon them with no one to tell them it was okay to be scared or to let go. Their damage is not so physically obviously or mentally obvious, but they still exist and they cut as deep as the damages that Theo, Nell, and Luke have. You say Shirley should say "I love you" to her husband, but should she just say that if that's not how she felt anymore or if that's not what she thinks she feels or if she doesn't even know what to say? To her, she thought her husband and her sister were cheating on her, and Shirley reacted in the way she reacted as a child to defend herself, by distancing herself and not looking at it, by protecting her heart from pain. So much of how the Crane kids' story is about how their childhood years and emotions continue to define and affect them into adulthood because in many ways, they never were allowed to emotionally grow and develop, that was taken from them the night their mother died.

  • @Syndor12
    @Syndor12 6 років тому +24

    In Shirley's defense, she thought her husband had cheated on her with her own sister, after just finding out that he'd secretly been taking Steven's money behind her back. I think she had every right to be cold and distant towards him, especially since it had only been a day or two since she found out about it.

    • @CaptainPikeachu
      @CaptainPikeachu 4 роки тому +6

      Totally agreed, in the context of the story, Shirley's cold distant behavior in that moment makes perfect sense, and while people might judge her, if they were in her shoes, they'd likely do the same thing.

    • @B-Dad
      @B-Dad Рік тому

      I’d agree except the show says otherwise. The show straight up tells you that the reason she is so angry with him is because she had done it. Hypocrisy and misplaced anger. But her sister had just killed herself days earlier so she’s not a villain or anything. Just dealing poorly as most people do, why should she be any different 😂👍🏾

    Notice how that scene with Theo and Shirley mimicked the exact scene of them as children within Hill House (when the walls were banging unexpectedly). Such an awesome correlation. That jump scare was also one of the few scares in like years that has made me jump legitimately and inch out of my chair.
    *I also don't know if I've said this before but...* (only saying this because it is not explicitly stated in the film)
    The girl that grabs Luke at the very end's name is Poppy. Specifically, Poppy Hill. She was William Hill's (the tall man) wife and also played a protagonist role within the original novel. So amazing that they add those beautiful and secret touches in for people that want to dig deeper. Thank you for the video, brother. =)

    I think Steven has a ghost... and the ghost is his father. When he was a kid, father was a hero, he wanted to be like him, always trying to help, take care of everybody, then father did a "mess".. and a big one. Steven got so angry with him, the hero image died, and now he wants to do opposite of everything father says or was. He doesnt want to have kids, in first place, then father says ghosts, he says "craziness". If father says craziness, he will say aliens,. He is always asking father what happened but when father starts to tell him, he doesnt listen, he cuts his father and.. hey, just like Shirley doing with Theo on the car. Theo starts to say, she "hey, you know, nevermind, I dont want to listen this". Thats it

    What you were pointing out about the eldest being the least mature is so spot on. They’re also the two that the house messed with the least, so it’s like the house forced the youngest to grow up and see things for what they really are (those witness marks the father speaks of)

      Bro...one of them did vasectomy coz he thinks he will pass on his sickness to his children. He took such a big step on himself. How fucked could you be to think that?
      And Shirley? She chose to be a mortician so that she could "fix" everything. Those pro bono cases her husband was talking about coz she couldn't bring herself to ask money from a grieving family like her own. She embalmed her own sister to "fix" things!
      How are these two least messed up. It's just that they couldn't afford to show their pain that easily. Luke and Shirley are the ones who looked after the younger siblings for a long time. You can tell Theo and Shirley are close. You can see Shirley adored Nelly, and regrets not picking up the phone coz she was working. That could happen to any of us! Steve wrote the whole novel which I think is his way of rationalising the events in the past. It's all a story in your hear just like a how a novel feels like. They are the eldest siblings. They can't afford to be weak or atleast show vulnerability. They are all business minded and supporting the family, you can say.
      I think these two are as messed up as other siblings. It's just that they HAD to find a way to rationalize things coz otherwise they won't be able to look after their family. Steve's and Shirley's grief and denial was their "walls" as Theo said.
      They did pay for Luke's rehab again and again. They did look after Nelly while trying to keep themselves sane. They have done horrible mistakes coz they are messed up children who never got to be children.

    It took me a third watch to start to grasp what is actually happening in this episode (and the previous one) and to start to really appreciate it. So now, after it being one of my least favourite episodes, it has suddenly become one of my favourites (probably after 4, 5 and 6). So the banging on the wall is not just a random creepy scene, it actually has relevance to the story. And I start to think it might have been Nell, because the banging started as they were arguing, the same way Nell yelled at them when they were arguing in the car. So the crazy thing is, when they were kids and Shirl and Theo were in the same room, and they heard the banging on the wall, it was also Nell. Just like when she hanged herself and went back in time to haunt herself, she was able to go back in time to haunt them. It's a symbol of Nell wanting their attention. She wanted them to go back to the house to meet them and tell them what she now knows, so they won't have to go through what she went through. This TV show has so many layers, I will definitely have to rewatch it a couple more times, because every time I get something more out of it.

    If you remember, the banging on the walls happened to Shirley and theo in the house, too, when they were together I issued that the first time lol

    • @zolibako4816
      @zolibako4816 5 років тому

      I'm thinking it actually might have been Nell banging on the walls - both times. In Shirl's house it started when they were arguing with each other, the same way Nell yelled at them when they were arguing in the car. And just like Nell was able to go back in time to haunt herself as the Bent Neck Lady, she could have gone back in time to bang on the wall, trying to get their attention.

    If she believes her husband cheating on her with her sister then I don't blame her for being pissed, and if he didn't then he should just tell her that.

    Someone probably told you but the scene where Nell jumps out and scares the two sisters they're still alive was apparently done without the actresses for the living sisters knowing what was going on they were told that they just want to run a few more lines in the car and then she jumped out and scared them and she was hiding in there before they got in the car so that was apparently they're genuine reactions

    I'm loving your reactions (and that jump scare 😂).
    I think something a lot of reactors (especially male, which is understandable) either miss or glaze over is that it wasn't just that Steve lied to his wife about the vasectomy, it was that he lied for that long. From the scene at the doctor, it seems like they were trying for a LONG time, and there is a LOT of mental and emotional distress that comes with trying to get pregnant, doing everything you're "supposed to," and repeatedly not being able to. And then for your partner - a person you should be able to trust more than anyone else, who has watched your stress and shame and pain through the entire process - to tell you he has been lying to you... that's honestly a traumatic thing to thing about. Even if he reverses the vasectomy, the trust would be destroyed. It's really hard to feel bad for someone who would do that to their partner.
    Anyway, glad I found you! You're a really fun and thoughtful reactor!

    I don’t really like most horror flicks. They don’t scare me - but that jump scare was awesome. One of the reasons I like the show so much is that it doesn’t really rely on jump scares so when they throw one in - holy crap.

  • @almasakic1148

    The reason Shirley can't forgive her husband is because she KNOWS that she did the exact same thing to him but worse. Her discovering them like that forced her to look at her own deception. If she says she forgives him, she has to admit deep down that she is a hypocrite. And she can't do this because Shirley is so invested in seeming like she has everything under control and is perfect. So it's the path of least resistance to just stay mad at him and stonewall him, rather than admit it to him.

    Great reaction as always. Did you jump again when you watched yourself jump? LOL One thing I noticed in this episode when the doorbell kept ringing is that, the door has an old-fashioned twist handle bell that would sound like a bicycle bell, and there is no apparent doorbell button on the outside of the door. Those are usually on the side that the door opens on. Yet you hear a modern doorbell. And who has a push bar on the door of their home? Weird!

    • @annetteabma
      @annetteabma 6 років тому +1

      It's a funeral home (their house is attached to it) which is why it has a push bar. I noticed that bell ringer too. Seems strange that the sound would not come from the ringer on the door.

    • @TheOtterBear61
      @TheOtterBear61 6 років тому

      @@annetteabma Yeah, but they seem to use it as their main entrance and exit, even for the home. I just found it strange. I think the hearing the bell on the door would have been creepier as well.
