He's the seventh FM. The fourth SNP FM. 3 FMs were Labour. A Lib Dem was twice Acting FM for short periods.
It's a bit confusing but he's the seventh person to hold the position of "First Minister", a title for the person that is head of the Scottish Government.

he's swearing allegiance to the king who technically "rules" over the united kingdom and therefore over scottland. So yes he is.

Just wondering whether or not John Swinney is only stepping in as a temporary measure or if he intends to be there on a much more permanent basis.
I, personally don't have too much of a problem with Swinney because I think that he's perhaps one of the SNP's most intelligent and more reasonable people.
I never really used to like him, but he appears to have mellowed and when listening to him speaking he often talks a lot of sense.
But much more importantly he's always struck me as a real decent person who genuinely cares.

Perhaps, John Swinney just isn't as big a tool as the others.
