  • Propagating pyracantha is easy. I know the temptation is to go to your local garden centre and purchase a “ready to plant” Firethorn, but wait, you see this plant growing everywhere. Taking cuttings (with permission) and getting a plant to grow for free is much more fun.
I will show you step by step how simple it is to propagate a Pyracantha, from cuttings and present the results I got after just 45 days.

I took 16 cuttings from my Pyracantha last year and had 3 lovely plants with roots :)

Well done. With all cuttings, you need to take as many as you can, so three successes out of sixteen cuttings are about right.

Had about the same success rate using just peat moss, no scraping just cutting on a bit of an angle. Same goes for the seeds. Either I haven't found the ideal procedures or this is a bit of a stubborn plant. Worth it though, just do plenty of them for assurance.

Yes, take plenty cuttings in late summer on new growth that is just starting to harden.

Extra work is involved if you root the cuttings and then plant them, but they may become overgrown and fail if they have no light, also they will fail if they dry out before sufficient roots have time to form. I took large 50 cuttings, 500 mm to 600 mm long and scraped the bark from the first 150 mm from the base. I cut some side branches off and stuck them in the ground. In a damp area they all succeeded 😊, as despite this summer having been very dry the ground in question is on a north facing slope and well sheltered. Others where the ground dried out failed. I'm going to try putting in new cuttings now so they will have the winter to root.

Hi Brian, you are right pyracantha does root very easily. What time of the year did you take your cuttings?

Thanks for the video. Taking cuttings today from existing plants I've been training to climb up the walls at front of my house and across the top of my bay window. Soil is extremely well drained (lots of brick rubble) and I feed during summer and slow release feed Autumn time. I've never seen as many flowers and subsequently berries in all my time (and I'm a landscaper). Must be doing something right!

I must be the weather this year, the pyracantha in this video that I shot last year looks twice as good one year on. Thank you for the comment.

Thanks for the video! How well does it propagate with winter cuttings? Thanks

Late summer or early autumn is the best time to propagate pyracantha, having said that it is a very robust plant so a winter cutting might work if you can find a branch that is still semi-ripe.

@@gardengrowgood thanks I’ll give it a try but looking forward to the warmer weather and giving the summer cuttings a try!
