Waiting for that day as Black people where we would stop seeing "Are you fully Black?" as a compliment.
+Tee Jay me too. try not to blame the person receiving or saying the statement. look at the media, all the black women commercials have thick rough looking hair that looks like it hasn't been combed. so to see a black person with different hair, people get curious. I'd always say, yeah I'm fully black. it isn't a compliment but i understand the curiosity behind it. i wouldn't get nasty or aggressive if someone asked me that, they're just curious and ignorant to the fact that black people come in all shapes, sizes, tones and hair textures.
+Jaelah O'Neil I hear you. However, not to elongate the discussion, not to waste your time. However, we need also to be deliberate in our stand. For too long we have been justifying subtle racism and ignorance. We live in an age of information, we can't still in 2016 be explaining our Blackness or excusing people who refuse to acknowledge it.
Thanks for the reply, regards, can't wait for your update.
I never understood why black people take it as a compliment if someone think there mixed smh. But it's good u corrected them, I remember I had a ex friend that swear she was mixed, nobody even assumed she was mixed she would just tell people she was mixed with Spanish, Chinese, and black. Her mom and daddy was black, girl was a little crazy
RIGHT!!!! Same here. It's like in order for me to be this attractive I could only be mixed?? Our people are brain-washed... slowly we are becoming us again.
That bothers me too. I mean, there's nothing wrong with being bi, tri, or whatever, but it makes me upset that some of us see it as an insult to be called black or nappy headed. I will never understand why.
Embrace your Natural Beauty Mexican Man here saying hello to all the beautiful Dark Skin Black women out there 😘
Stuff like this makes me want to cut my hair off and have cute little baby curls
+Shanell Porter that's why I can't do it. I really wanna tho. But I'm so scared imma end up looking like Lil Bill.. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I'm sorry but "my head was shaved like a meat loaf" 😂
Kamryn Shadie omg that was so damn funny i had to pause the video and read the comments to see if anybody caught that meatloaf part
wow this is the best natural hair journey video that i've seen. very well put together w/ the music & editing and such. can't wait to see your 2 year update. i'll be here for it 😊😊
i know your husband thought you were absolutely breath taking with your short hair! i know i do
i just chopped my hair off yesterday. I've had long hair all my life, but I didn't cry(surprisingly). My had is the size of a UFO, but i love it! I called my mom, sister, husband and posted it of facebook! I have NO regrets! i can't wait til it grows and I see how my curls look!
Lmao at ufo! You sound like me! I want to big chop but I'm like damn my head is huge lol
LMAO not UFO..my head is huge too but im really thinking about chopping mine off today
Your hair is GORGEOUS!!!
+Jaelah O'Neil thanks for sharing I did a1 yr video too my date was Feb 17, 2015 when I big chopped too we both came a loonnnng way :) #struggle is real
When you were explaining how cutting your hair made you feel, i began to cry because I experienced the same horrible feelings during my first big chop. I couldn't BELIEVE how much of my self worth had been wrapped in my hair and a perm box. I had no idea that I would hit such a low but I am SO THANKFUL that I did because my sense of worth in now wrapped in WHO I am and no longer WHAT I look like. Thank you for sharing! #USAFSistersTho!
I love it when you said, 'as the months went by it became impossible for me to regret it'. That is the moment you saw the true beauty of your hair for the first time! That is the moment that many 'naturals' look to attain when they have to reluctantly cut their hair off. I truly love your story. Black women have the most beautiful hair. Thank you for sharing
The picture at month 10 was so pretty to me 😍😍😍
Your hair is absolutely stunning!! It honestly looks like you individually curled each and every piece with a teeny tiny curling iron and used all of the oils in the world. I don't think I have ever seen curls as beautiful and healthy as yours!!! So glad you kept with your natural hair because it is gorgeous!!! Can't wait to see next years update!!!!
we where here with you from the very 1st vlog when you where so upset and you never once took a bad picture when your hair wasn't done up your hair was and is beautiful still
Her genetics on point.
Your positivity grew with your hair!!!!!! congratulations! I could tell the way you spoke that you are a different person..... congratulations!
I've decided....I'm gonna start again
Definitely needed this! shaved all my hair off two weeks ago and still getting used to how much I relied on my hair >.
I can tell you've grown so much as a person in one year. You're such a beautiful inspiration!!! I watch all your videos, Love you Jaleah!!!!😍
Lady this is the BEST hair journey that I've seen. So honest, with great time-line pics. Ur beautiful! Thanks
I'm 53yo and my husband sheared me like a sheep twice in the 90s. Super strength relaxer burned my scalp so badly and a curl perm disaster (so-called stylist didn't have the neutralizer, started the Wave Nuveau on me anyway, sent for the product by taxi = overprocessed).
Anyway, last Summer I mistakenly thought relaxers were improved and called myself texlaxing my hair with Straight From Eden.
Big chop this year on Feb 1.
I learned my lesson, you look fabulous sis!
Salute our husbands too! That's love.
Yes girl I know how you feel! I shaved all my hair off a year ago aswell ( I was bald and felt so god damn uncomfortable) and my hair is legit the same length as yours i love watch your videos because I can really relate to it finally founding someone who has the same length and felt the same about cutting their hair off! Your hair looks great and I'm glad you made this video!
I love your story! You are beautiful with or without your hair! Thank you for sharing and being a light for those that have or are currently going through the same.
I don't know if you'll even see/ read this but I love your story . You are such an inspiration to me. I recently big chopped about two months ago & I too misread all the happiness that people spoke of behind the big chop. I thank you so much for speaking on your experiences with the big chop. It felt really good to see someone go through the same emotional fall & make it through. I leave for basic training in 5 days & up until watching your videos I was really scared about being judged but you've really helped me with those fears . Thank you so much !
This was so beautifully done Jaelah! Keep going! You're definitely one of my hairspirations!
I met you one day when you came to my job, I worked at Cream in MacArthur mall. and all I could think about was how amazing your makeup looked then when I approached you about it you were so chill and humble. now I'm just finding your UA-cam page and I just really cut all my hair off. I watched almost all your hair journey videos and they just gave me so much comfort. finding your videos have really helped me and accept my hair and how great it is.
I'm one year officially after my big chop. I subscribed to you alittle after I got of the hospital after I had abdominal surgery. That's when u were rocking your natural in August 2015. I'm just glad to see that your not depressed anymore. I had to big chop due to the meds and aesthesia that made my hair thin and break, just blessed to be alive. But, my 4c hair, after one year is beautiful. I want to thank u, again. Ur very inspirational😍
I absolutely loved this video. I can relate to your experiences in many ways: 1) With questions about being 100% black just because you have what some may consider "good" hair and 2)I, too, was in the Air Force stationed overseas at varies times where you just have to figure your hair situation out. This is a wonderful message for anyone and everyone trying to just accept themselves for who they are since "hair" is such a huge part of a black woman's life. Thank you for your openness and candor!
9 month and 10 month cute as a chocolate baby bottom. So adorable 💜💜
I always watch this video for inspiration! I literally just did the big chop April 30th from bra strap length to ear . With the help of protective styles and my oil mixture I am now to the bottom of my neck 5 weeks later!
what protective styles did you use and what mixture? does your hair just grow really fast?
So far I've done crochet braids, faux locs and cornrows. And yes, I made my own mixture of oils (jojoba, sweet almond, baobab, vitamin e, coconut, olive) and shea butter. I also do the aztec hair mask about every 3 weeks. My hair grows fast that's why I didn't hesitate to big chop but it's never grown like this before. I can emal or instagram you pics of where I started and where I am now
+Markeeta Davis How often do you use the oil on your hair and scalp?
im so happy you came out of that.. Hair dont make a person its in you period .. You are a queen with or without
Wow! Those literally have to be the MOST die hard BEAUTIFUL curls I've ever seen! Omg, what do you do?! 😍😍😍
Absolutely beautiful and I appreciate that you shared it with us.
Those curls omg YES 😭💕💕💕
"Shaved liked a meatloaf"
Gave me life this day!
I love your honesty and upfront attitude about your hair journey and everything else you talk about in your videos.
Keep on!
You are absolutely beautiful and your story will help so many young girls and woman because we all at times define ourselves by our hair, but because you have went through this journey and found out who you are and have regained your self esteem. I believe that this will help many regain their self esteem and to let them know that you are beautiful no matter what skin you are in. May God continue to bless you in your future hair journey and your everyday life.
You look SO gorgeous before and after girl 💕💁🏻💁🏻
My nanny put me in a adult perm once I was 5 and I just got my big chop last year once I was 12 I LOVE my hair and everyone want me to back to a perm but my hair grew on me and it's so big now
Wait! Your nanny decided what to do with your hair? If I came home and I saw that my kid got a perm I would fire that nanny immediately.
I absolutely loved this video. I just recently did the big chop and I feel like my story is a lot like yours. I remember the horror of getting my hair done and I know I use to cry because my scalp is so sensitive. I was also privileged to be able to get my hair done every two weeks after my mom had enough. My aunt is the only one who does my hair and I recently moved out of the city to start my life and I don't have access to her, so wasn't being texturized anymore. 8 months later... I did the big chop. It's been a week today and i'm loving it.
Your hair looks amazing and I can't wait to see your two year update!
That was simply beautiful. Each month you got prettier and more confident. I loved your journey sista, and please, keep us posted. You have a beautiful soul, face and hair!!!! Come into acceptance of it all and there will be YOUR power!!! God bless you young sista, keep on keeping on. You're a winner.
I'm actually thinking about a sec. big chop and this inspired me even more.😍😍😍
My gosh, you are so adorable with short hair
I love the way you've gone on this journey and embraced and learned to love your natural hair. It to did this year's ago and feel more black women should do the same!
The best.....the absolute best hair hair journey video I've seen. I can identify myself soooo perfectly with this story....it is like we live parallel lives....
Thank you for this ❤
what a great video and your hair is beautiful. new subbies!
i must say I find it baffling that black people think curly hair = you can't be full black and short hair = you must be lesbian.
our people need to get some education and information.
nonyameko afiya black people ask what I put in my hair to get it to curl 😒😞smh...o and when they advise me against products for natural hair that's been working for me😴
MzYumYum69 I've literally gotten told im not fully black by my own black friends 🙃
beautiful... just beautiful story thank you for sharing
Beautiful! I appreciate you being so candid about the ups and the downs. I just cut off my hair after being natural for 16 years and I am NOT quite comfortable with it yet. It's not always roses and rainbows and you were honest about that... I loved your hair shaved. Love it now. Kudos to you!
Literally this video made me fall in love with how real and lit you are. You're my fave youtuber!
Damn you are the best by doing those amazing curls!
When you big chop because Jaelah looked so beautiful with her TWA, but instead five months later I end up looking like Norbits twin sister. :( Love watching your self growth and hair growth over the year. Xx
OMG..I almost slid off of the couch laughing so hard!!! Yep, that description would fit my 4c(xyz) type hair best!
I am so proud of you. Can't believe the year went so quick. Absolutely beautiful! Well done x
Yesss! Thank you for a timelapse showing the inbetweens! Thats what most of us are looking for..
you have beautiful natural curls and short hair looks really nice on you
I've been procrastinating on cutting my hair because I feel like people will talk about me especially at school any advice?
Yaya Gang you have to do what makes you feel better! Just remember your hair is not going to stay short...it's going to flourish into a beautiful fro. Just keep in mine that not everyone is going to accept the your hair in its natural state. Just embrace your hair. There are lots of protective styles you can do. Hope this helps luv!
I was the same way. no lie I cut my hair on thanksgiving day and the first time I walked outside my house without a hat on or a head wrap someone gave me the nastiest look I ever gotten in years. I feel like if I do go out I have to look girly so people wont think I'm gay. but I snapped out of it quick people are going to talk about me throughout all of this but I really don't care anymore. my guy loves me and my family and closest friends love me the way I am and most of all "I" love me. so I think you should go for it.
I transitioned in box braids and twists, then I cut it a couple months ago. My hair is long enough to wear out and it's been almost a year.
Yaya Gang When I wore my natural hair out for the first time (I have a TWA) I went to school, and I kid you not so many people judged me and gave me looks. I even had close friends stop talking to me because my hair was shorter and natural (Im glad though becaus3 those people were not real friends) but you know what, it is fine because I know I am on a journey to healthy hair. Its funny because the ones who judged me the most all didnt even have hair and only wore weaves
Yaya Gang Just cut it off. I shaved my hair off (buzzed it) a few months before my 9th grade year (sophomore this year). I'd say if you're worried shave it in the summer. That way it can grow a little and you can get use to being around people with it. Over all I've been happier. Just do you cuz at the end of the day no matter what you do to your hair, there's always gonna be someone that doesn't like it.
You are truly an inspiration. I'm cutting my hair today. I'm so glad I watched your video. I feel very confident about cutting my hair now.
Your hair is BEAUTIFUL! Just the same as your personality! Congrats on your 1year anniversary!
I can't believe that any mother would put hair cream on this soft hair.
You are so damn gorgeous with or without hair.....bye Felicia
Best hair journey I've ever seen!! Love it! I did the big chop 1 month ago and it's the best decision I've ever made.
After watching your first video I decided that I was not my hair and although it had been long all my life it was time for a change. I just wasn't into the process of relaxing anymore. Now I couldn't be more confident. After your puff tutorial. I tried it and what do you know my hair was long enough. So thank you.....I love your spirit always positive/tell it like it is. Keep up the good work.
I'm not gay but why you so damn cute...😂😂😂
How can anyone dislike this vid..smh
it is so amazing to see how beautiful and healthy curly hair can actually look and be with the right maintenance. thanks to all the girls who have the braveness to just cut the dead, unhealthy unmanageable locks of and show how wonderful a new start can be. Thank you too. you look fantastic
you are a huge inspiration , i have been looking at for hours and your channel is the best !! ii love love love your hair girl
You're natural hair pattern is so beautiful! you were uniquely and beautifully made in the image of god! Jesus loves you and he personally died for you!
You're actually so beautiful 😍
Such a BEAUTIFUL video, simply BEAUTIFUL! This is truly inspiring, i cut my hair about 5 months ago. Almost 6 now (on may 2nd) and i dont not at all regret cutting it once i have seen the really beautiful and potential my hair have. Thank you for sharing this video 🎀❤️
I love your videos. I'm glad you shared and that you've come so far in your journey to a place where you're happy and confident. Your hair is beautiful and so are you.
I'm working on myself. My big chop was yrs ago, but I've gained a lot of weight due to medical issues and shy away from taking pictures, but now I'm updating my Instagram and going to be documenting my journey through weight loss, hair journey and coping with Fibromyalgia and Osteoarthritis. Thanks again for sharing and good luck on the rest of your journey.
I recently just did the big chop and my curls aren't as beautiful as yours. Your blessed
Why is it a compliment if people think youre not a 100% black? As a kid i was actually really jealous of the black/mixed kid with this awesome curly hair and the braided styles they got which i couldn't have. Her curls look really pretty i don't get that hate for natural hair in the US at all.
Of course you don’t get it. We’re dealing with a larger colorist scale that has been idealized to people of color their whole lives. We have been taught to hate ourselves. Being taught and told looser hair or fairer skin was more desirable. We didn’t hate natural hair. We just didn’t have any reason to love it. But over the years and thank god POC have flourished and are now finally basking in the glory of being a beautiful textured hair woman
I loved watching this video!! Your hair texture is beautiful! I have decided to go natural and I am definitely following your journey! Thank you!
This video/testimony brought tears to my eyes. Until I saw this video I was feeling the same way but seeing your happiness and growth made me smile.
you are so pretty.and what kinds of products did you use on your afro? Jaelah O'Neil
Wait Minou Melanin, good hair is healthy hair, that means "all hair types... our community have enough to deal with without added misconceptions.....
By far my FAVORITE natural on UA-cam!
I loved your hair the moment you cut it and I love it now, the way you style it is so unique from every other UA-camr.
You are so beautiful! You inspired me so much by watching at your videos to big chop about a month ago and not care what other people got to say. Thank you 😩❤️🙏🏼💕💕
Please do a vid about you going to marry your husband in another country. I am in the process of that.
Not that it's a bad thing but just curious, Why'd you choose Japan ?
Just did my big chop three days ago & you were definitely one of my inspirations especially since we have the same hair type! Thanks Hubby! Please keep them them coming!
Never complain about those curls !! They so beautiful
I mean most black People aren't 100%
most African Americans you mean? And yes true. But we are black. That is majority of our DNA, I have probably 25% white and I will always say black, because that's what I look like IMO. Black is beautiful. 😊
I hate when people say smh you've got some African American and Caribbean get their dna results back in the 90% range but no the 10% makes up the difference why you are pretty or have nice hair
***** It actually isn`t. More blacks are mixed with red skinned natives than european. There are plenty of people who can and have traced far back enough to see 0 european ancestry or like i said 5%
Daisia williams yea bc of the history but most mixed comments are from asking about genetics from parents or grandparents not 6 generations ago.white folks aren't 100% but nobody is asking them about mixed looks nor or they claiming any other blood.black ppl just need to take pride in blackness and that we are versatile.
What's happening in the third picture at 3:05?
+nicolerenee7 thats how loose the skin was on my head. it wad really bumpy and meaty.
lol thats just how some people scalps look under their hair. she was just squishing it up to show her loose scalp. But nothing wrong with it many people scalp is like that under their hair, yours may be like that.People just dont know especially girls because girls dont normal keep their hair bald.
+Cher Cher Ik a person whose head is naturally like that. You don't even have to squeeze his head
Loved this video so much, I am sharing it in my subscribers' newsletter. Thanks for have the courage to bear all concerning your journey.
This is the true essence of a natural hair journey - it's as personal as a journey can get.
This was absolutely beautiful and spoke volume to me. It's exactly what I'm going through now. I cut all my hair off to a pixie cut went months without a relaxer and finally two weeks ago asked my husband to take the clippers and cut it all even and remove all remaining relaxer. I am a mother of three very honest boys so when my husband cut my hair and my 8 year old walked in as I was almost to the brink of tears he screams "mommy I love it, your are beautiful!" That one comment was all it too for me to go from great sadness to being queen of the world. Like you I was at the salon every 2 weeks and in between that was 4am wake up calls and kneeling in my moms bathroom with her doing my hair before she was off to work. Although I'm still adjusting I'm enjoying the adventure and seeing more curls pop daily. Thank you so much for sharing your journey.
You are an inspiration, I am going to go ahead and get all my hair cut off and start over. I have watched other youtube videos, but yours gave me a little more hope for growing hair back so quickly. I am going to get every product you used and we will see what happens. Thanks for the video!
Those curls are absolutely GORGEOUS...beautiful hair on a beautiful woman, nothing to be ashamed about!!
I love your natural hair journey. Your hair is beautiful. Be blessed Queen!!
I watch this video for inspiration every single time. Month 3 and I'm still trying to get use to this. Thank you girl!!
This was an awesome presentation/ recap of your natural hair journey. I've seen some of your other videos before. You and your hair are beautiful! I'm glad you found a way to believe that.
This is the best natural hair journey video I’ve seen so far! I can relate so much to your hair story!! 💛
Thanks for being so transparent! Your hair is gorgeous! You, my dear are beautiful!!!!!
oml I am so happy I seen this video, I recently just did the big chop and I am so nervous to see what it can look like so short. Your pic from month 11, I've seen before and I absolutely love it. you seriously helped me. Thank you thank you.
Yay! I'm so happy this has worked out for you. I've been following you through most of your journey and I think it's very great. You showed a very real response to something people don't often think about. I'm writing because I am now natural for 4 years and I could not bring myself to do a big chop even though I knew logically my hair (and scalp) would thank me for it later. I was trying to hold on to as much length as possible. Still am actually, lately I've been thinking about cutting it all or most of it off. My hair has been shedding and breaking a lot due to stress. So that's something I'm dealing with again.
Thank you for sharing with us!
I enjoyed your hair story, your transparency, beautiful...Beauty does truly come from within.
That's how I felt about my weave. My mom never understood why I was so obsessed and particular about it, but it made me feel better about myself. But that was a year ago. Ya girl is natural now .
Congrats👏🏾
Yayyyy! I'm happy for you!
