I found this video by luck...and being a drummer myself, I was intrigued in the beginning by the tone of Butch's drums...full, fat and deep...unlike most big band - jazz drummers. So, that got my attention and then as the song progressed, I became more and more impressed with his skills. He gets creative and keeps things interesting for everyone concerned...including himself. You can tell, he loves what he is doing~and he does it as good as any Ive heard. LOVED IT~~!!!
Butch Miles - The greatest post WWII big band drummer, best one I heard from the late 1970s to today. Great version of this song! Somewhere Benny, even Gene are smiling.
There is no doubt that Butch Miles is one of the top drummers of our time. I have never met him but I have seen many videos and he is always smiling. I have some friends who know him and they all say that the smile is an honest reflection of the man, whom they say is one of the most friendly, good natured and nicest person they know. It really shows in his playing.
I'm an avid percussionist and sax player and I have to say this is one of the best videos I've ever seen. As always hats off to Butch. Always tasteful, never overpowering, but can kick like a mule and show off with the best of em' when appropriate.
Buddy Rich often had acerbic comments about a lot of drummers. There were a few he spoke well of but one thing I found funny was that the ones that hung on his every word, Kind of creeped him out. Despite that, but he still recommended Butch to count Basie because he could clearly see that he understood the area like few others. Buddy would never touch sing sing sing in deference to Gene who he loved. Hearing Butch’s approach to it makes me think of how Buddy might have played it. And this is the 90s here… Butch’s hands never stopped improving. Magnificent big band drumming here. I’d love to see this with all the ensemble parts intact. They are part of the fun, you know.
Thank you for posting this. It is a great rendition. All of the fellows are excelent. I don't remember hearing a better version. All the fellows blend to make this very good. Again, Thank you!! .
I had the pleasure of seeing Butch live with the Count Basie Orchestra in New Orleans back around 1978-ish. Fantastic player. That same concert, the late, great dancer Gregory Hines actually sang a couple of songs with orchestra that night as well.
Wow! That's fantastic ,especially you are a woman!? I have never seen a lady music engineer ( live music), I remember Jane Child ( music recording engineer/ singer/ performer).
Absoluteluy wonderful. a first class personel and a magnificent drummer, Benny you have nothing to worry about whilst these guys are around, a magnificient tribute.
Butch is a exllent percussionest that does not get a lot of mention when all the big names are tossed around but can hold his own with any of the top names Rich,Bellson ,morello (r-i-p ) Joe Ect Ect he is very fulid around the kit and makes it look effortless. t
Louis Prima's version of this is not as good, but his version of "That Old Black Magic" is the best. Sometimes a different version is better and some times, it's not.
Awesome performance by the Master, Mr. Butch Miles! (he even put in that cowbell lick at the end of his solo, ala Krupa - I loved it) Thank you for posting this
Butch put the 'stank' on it! That's when your face is set in a way that you know you know you are grooving to the beat! And everyone who loves jazz knows that face!
Great phrasing, swing, timing, accenting and style. A master who clearly loves his instrument. I'm a huge Buddy fan but Buddy's bag of tricks gets a little predictable where Butch creates more on the spot. Great stuff.
Butch is one of the best , I got to see him play at Wooster Oh. this year . Talk to him a shot time , his a very friendly and love to talk about drums. I think he's as good or better then Rich was.
@SwingCla: Is there somewhere where I can the Butch Miles' complete performance of the song, including the parts you deleted? And why did you delete them?
what's the name of the band.... cannot be Butch Miles band.... Butch Miles plays with the band. He is not just makeing a lot of noise like lotsof other drummers....
I knew both Gene and Buddy each was great but each played certain songs there way for the smooth feeling Gene was the best and Buddy was the power house. Both men admired each other totally. Butch Miles used to slip into the music room at school and practice. All beautiful drummers.
Gene Krupa owns this song , but the best drumming , is Buddy Rich, playing with Harry James. Unfortunately, audio only. The vision would have been brilliant.
Drago Kovac - The Harry James version is a medley of several songs which has a bit of Sing Sing Sing in it - but is definitely isn't sing sing - and Buddy Rich's tom tom backing is quite a different vibe to Gene's now immortalised 'swung jungle rhythm'.
I agree. However, this is not to say that Butch is not as good as Krupa. It's just that he took a proven recipe and tried to improve on it. This is one of the songs that should not be changed. Can you imagine a different version of "Take 5" by Joe Morello? Some things should be left alone.

Butch Miles fantastic , world class drummer, loved him with the Count Basie band.
I cannot ask for more...all these great musicians and Butch, my favourite drummer, all united in one band!!
There is no doubt that Butch Miles is one of the top drummers of our time. I have never met him but I have seen many videos and he is always smiling. A great sax player ! A wonferful trumpeter! A Fantastic drummer !
I really love this song , this is one of the better versions . Buch Miles is just fantastic . Thanks for posting .
The best version I've ever Heard !!!
It is excellent but it is not the version I fell in love with as a kid. Don't try to change the recipe!
I agree. I love Gene's 1972 version with Lionel Hampton but this kicks!
Es un baterista con estilo.y muy creativo.
Buddy is the King. All hail Prince Butch! Great stuff. No wonder he was a thorn in Buddy's side for years.
Buddy Rich often had acerbic comments about a lot of drummers. There were a few he spoke well of but one thing I found funny was that the ones that hung on his every word, Kind of creeped him out. Buddy had great words for Pa Pa Joe Jones, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Joe Morello, Philly Joe Jones
Butch was always a definite percussion player He will always be recognized as an elite musician in every way.
Thank you for posting this. It is a great rendition. All of the fellows are excelent. I don't remember hearing a better version. All the fellows blend to make this very good. Again, Thank you!!

Excellent interplay between Butch and Randy Sandke! AWESOME!
Love watching the great drummers on a 4 or 5 piece kit.
Butch could absolutely "kick like a mule" but was so smooth in doing it. Great deep, rich sound from his Ludwig's.
Love Butch Miles - great player and a cool guy! I'm a fan for life!
I was Walt's live sound engineer for a few years right before this, had to move away in 1991. Loved working with this band.
Wow! That's fantastic ,especially you are a woman!? I have never seen a lady music engineer ( live music), I remember Jane Child ( music recording engineer/ singer/ performer).

Great interpretation of a classic.
Louis Prima, classic - so great it is still a great piece of music today. When you hear that drum, you just want to get up and dance :)
Louis Prima's version of this is not as good, but his version of "That Old Black Magic" is the best. Sometimes a different version is better and some times, it's not.

very much appreciated.. thanks for finding this one.
fantastic !!!!!!!
Great playing and sounding drums.
Ludwig, of course.
Just needed a 4 piece kit.
トランペット、抜群のセンス!!!!!☆
Can you imagine doing this for a living !!!? Wow
What a tenor solo !
Brilliant
Butch, you're so tasteful (one drummer to another).
Classy. Put up the whole song. I'd love to see it.
Excellent!!!
Butch put the 'stank' on it! That's when your face is set in a way that you know you know you are grooving to the beat! And everyone who loves jazz knows that face!
Good, very good, great!
Butch is his usual self. Very musical and tasteful….note for note.
Butch miles? What more could be said about a natural talent?
Robert Delich He is my all-time favorite drummer. He makes every band he's in that much better.
SO GOOD.
very good band! And Butch of course!!
Ma786sai Dua a drummers drummer. Pure class. Effortless sticking.
buddy recomended butch to basie when basie was looking for a drummer , he can't be all bad
Butch is not bad. He's just different.
The dummer is... amazing
The Best.

R.I.P. Butch
@SwingCla: Is there somewhere where I can the Butch Miles' complete performance of the song, including the parts you deleted? And why did you delete them?
they play real good
Apart from Benny . the greatest version I have ever heard, I need more info on this great band, feeling a bit pissed, time for bed. goodnight.
Listen to those trombones...wow
Anyone know where i can get the sheet music to the trumpet solo? I'd LOVE to learn it
it's great but did they skip the clarinet solo? or is it just me because that is (or would be) the best part.
Steve, It begins around the 7 minute mark. Norm W.
muy impresionante waoooooooooooo
I didn't know Fred Couples could play golf AND trumpet! lol
Nice version, but falls short of the 1938 Carnegie Hall epic.
So do most things in life.
can anyone tell me what instruments are used all of em i mean not saxophone not clarinet not trombone something else
What snare was Butch using with those Ludwigs.
Right? That snare sound is to die for
can someone write down tenor sax solo ?:)
i want to play this solo but im not so good with teory
what's the name of the band.... cannot be Butch Miles band.... Butch Miles plays with the band. He is not just makeing a lot of noise like lotsof other drummers....
Who is Butch signalling to at 1.40? And why?
He is saying "Part 2". Since it's the second part of sing sing sing
To the audience.
@maynardwaltrip
Hi old sport... nice you caan hear it... ;o)
Rich Little on trumpet solo?
Randy Sanke plays the trumpet solo!!
Lol, ;)
Lol, looks like Rich Little.
Aussie Murray Wall on bass?
Yes.
waoooooooo
this is jazz :D
Rande Sanke on trumpet.
Beast.
Butch was every bit as good as Rich and Krupa.Very interesting soloist.
idk why the drummer looks like that one worker at the hotel from home alone 2
wow
I prefer the version with John Williams conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra.
BUTCH HAS KRUPA BEAT SO FAR HERE IT'S NOT FUNNY,HOW SMOOTH HE GETS OVER THE DRUMS LUDWIGS SOUND GOOD TOO!
搖擺少女我百看不膩。
Sorry. I was spoiled by Gene Krupa's version. He was more basic and earthy on the drums. Gave it a more tribal sound and not as fluffy as this.
I knew both Gene and Buddy each was great but each played certain songs there way for the smooth feeling Gene was the best and Buddy was the power house. Both men admired each other totally. Butch Miles used to slip into the music room at school and practice. All beautiful drummers.
Um, what dUmbrella, "earthy" mean?
Gene Krupa owns this song , but the best drumming , is Buddy Rich, playing with Harry James.
Unfortunately, audio only.
The vision would have been brilliant.
the version of Gene is the best , Buddy is amazing but not in this song.
Drago Kovac - The Harry James version is a medley of several songs which has a bit of Sing Sing Sing in it - but is definitely isn't sing sing - and Buddy Rich's tom tom backing is quite a different vibe to Gene's now immortalised 'swung jungle rhythm'.
Yes! I'd had loved to watch that! I just listened to that audio one yesterday!
Clumsily edited.
Great...but missing Gene’s Slingerland sound.
しかしラディックのドラム、いい音するなぁ…
Jim Grodnik What's the meaning of that? ^^;
Jim Grodnik Thank you. I understand. But… I think his beat is like a big wave. So as a result he keeps the beat. Anyway his sound is very pleasant!☆
Katsuya Takazawa
I understand your point mister :)
Arnold schwarzenegger playing saxophone :D
BUTCH HAS KRUPA BEAT SO FAR HERE IT'S NOT FUNNY,HOW SMOOTH HE GETS OVER THE DRUMS
benny would give his ok
The Gene Krupa version is SOOOOOOO much better.

As much as I like Butch's version ... Kruppa's is better, cause he did it first
BUTCH HAS KRUPA BEAT SO FAR HERE IT'S NOT FUNNY
So far I have seen numerous vids of sing sing sing. Not one drummer gets into it
like Gene. they are so bland, and mechanical.
Pas nul le batteur!!!!
