That definitely didn't make Diantha look any better, that's for sure. I also didn't care for how the episode had much of it's focus on things other than the Diantha vs Leon battle, and I have to wonder if she would've been portrayed as doing better against him if we got to see the whole battle play out instead of prioritizing a plot line about 2 random kids
@@matthewkuscienko4616 well Leon's Rillaboom defeated 5 of her pokemon It was just like leon vs alain Ratio of both them taking Down Leons pokemon remains 1/3
Why would that be "plot armor"? You being a Champion doesn't mean you compare to other Champions. A Champion is only the strongest trainer in their region, it doesn't really mean anything outside of that region. I bet many(if not the majority) fans wouldn't complain about it being "plot armor" if it was someone like Cynthia sweeping some other Champion.
@@speedsterx3059 The Same Rillaboom that took a Fire Blast to the face and then went on to take out most of Diantha's Team was defeated in two hits a few episodes earlier by Alain and little time for training has passed by.
To be fair, you can make the multiple cases with the anime giving characters some much need flair. Take Brock and Misty for example. If it weren’t for the anime, they would have been a bunch of easy (or hard if you went with Charmander) one-off gym leaders. That being said, Diantha probably got the biggest glow-up in recent memory thanks to the Masters 8 tournament. Unfortunately, said tournament also gave her the biggest disrespect in history. Her match with Leon totally did her dirty. We knew that he would win but I still say she was horribly treated in that episode.
Honestly that battle against Leon doesnt even count. Alain 2 shotted that Rillaboom and Diantha gets sweeped? Make it make sense. Diantha thrives against hyper offensive opponents, this was showcased with Lance, and Leon is just that, so she giving him a challenge would be understandable. Make him struggle and use every small opportunity and outsmart Diantha, maybe even make her get cocky to mirror Lance and that is what makes her loose, i always thought she had a bit of ego to her. It would have given Diantha respect and hype up Leon more and organically at that, something Journeys cannot do apperantly. We all know Leon is strong offensively so showcasing his strategy prowess would have been great, it would also give the idea that strategy and brains are more important than muscles and simple power.
@@jpmedina8328 pretty normal since Rillaboom has a wall breaker moves and pretty much agile, while Chesnaught has a pretty good defense, better than Gorgeist but hey, look at the positive view, she at least damaged Leon’s Charizard with Thunderbolt and controled its Gmax Wildfire, also she took out 2 of Leon’s Pokémon that’s a pretty good one tbh
It would have been cool to see banners of Diantha’s face throughout the region and had strangers raving about how cool she is. Something that can be viewed differently on the first playthrough (oh, she’s really popular) than on later runs, since that would all be recontextualised with that foreknowledge.
If memory serves, they do actually do that... if only just once. Something like a giant display screen in Lumiose featuring her in an ad, and two NPCs looking up at it while making a comment about her. Hope I'm not misremembering it, though :P
I don’t think in game citizen perception affects how strong champions are viewed by the actual player base because it’s assumed a champion is some level of celebrity
In Coumarine city someone says how excited she is to have seen Diantha at the train station. There is a hotel where someone will tell you about Diantha, as well as some cafés. Then we have the billboard, and honestly Pokémon XY have so many people to talk to, as well as a TV in the Pokémon center with actual shows on it (though they're just dialogues) She probably is mentioned on other places as well.
It sucks how ridiculously easy X/Y where with and without the experience share on, but on a side note even though you don't encounter her very often Diantha has a certain charm about her that I love which makes her one of my top favorite champions.
My favorite part about her is her teams theme Hawlucha showing action movies Tyrantrum and Auroras showing prehistoric movies Gourgeist showing horror movies Goodra showing medieval movies Gardevoir showing romance movies Really nice tie in
I really love Diantha for her aesthetic, she deserves better than what she got. Obviously, her fight is considered easy due to XY being easy, but it would have been good if she had more of an impact in the story/world at the very least, so she could have a stronger presence.
Problem with the Leon vs. Diantha fight was that the writers want him to be "unbeatable" but they made him "untouchable", which is even worse. He's a hardcore Gary Stu, and then he disrespected Diantha by saying he "just got lucky". What a way to spit on her efforts man.
Honestly, even in the games I disliked how the made him sound like he was the best of all champions. Leon's design was something that I never really liked either, rather his clothing style since he looked better in the post game battle tower.
@@masterprick1 Tbh, I really liked Leon in the games. Haven't watched the anime but the game Leon is the only responsible adult champion in the games. He actually tries to keep kids away from conflict and dangerous situations, protecting the region himself as he feels that's his duty
Honestly I didn't have a hard time with Leon. I had my Drednaw set up stealth rock at the start and when Charizard came out the rocks took out half of it's hp my un-dynamax boltund took it out with wild charge. It was so anti-climactic that I had to closed the game, load the previous save file and rebattle him again with my gigantamax Cinderace.
@@warlockboy3864 lmao thats any champ u prepare for. Lets be honest nobody uses rocks/hazards in story battles. If you do otr even try to play competitively, you just sweep any fight
I feel like X&Y’s focus wasn’t on the actual battling the whole time. The EXP share made the game really easy anyway but honestly it felt to me like they put all their effort in the beauty of the game- the new 3D aspects, the massive city, the camera angles, the music, the new models, the effects, the customisable clothing. I loved X&Y because of this relaxed feel, it was a nice break after Black and White 2. It was a smooth introduction to the new generation of 3D pokemon games whilst adding that emphasis on the beauty over battle, the extensive clothing customisations even gave you special discounts and boosts too! I think Diantha deserved more screen time in game though, I would’ve loved to see her intellectual brilliance and battle flare more often. I remember her being quite happy that you won the battle, it’s possibly she’s just so busy from being a celebrity actor as well as the champion of Kalos that having champion taken from her provided her some relief.
as someone who thrived in black and white 2, it felt like I was a champion exploring kalos, like the game rewarded me for my past deeds and didn't take me as some kind of novice who was "just entering the world" The fight with diantha felt more like a "we're 2 champions seeing who's best" rather than "she's so much better than me and I'm a scrub" The EXP share being on even let me customize a "champion team" for the big fight, so I felt like kalos was a celebration rather than a war. It made X and Y some of my favorite games, and diantha my favorite champion. Just because it felt like the game finally recognized the battles from red and blue, gold and silver, emerald, diamond, black and white, and black and white 2, and said "ok, no, you're a champion many times over, now your goal isn't to get to the top, but to learn about building adventure, learn about what gives you meaning and joy. To me it was a game filled with light. Thus was a good memory. Though I could be putting way too much emotion and feeling into a 3D video game made by a corperation...though a small part of me, wishes for just a minute, we didn't need to be that cynical. I think that's why it resonates so much, the game itself makes you not see the world through a bleak light. From fairy types being a very joyful typing, the game focusing on 3D the camera customization and a beautiful world, and diantha having such an ornate battle entrence, it was like the game itself was reminding us all to take just a small moment, to truly enjoy just how beautiful the world can be.
Putting strength aside, she's arguably the most interesting champion. She seems more fit for the non-competitive themes of pokemon like empathy, friendship and even morality. I feel like you can tell many intriguing stories with her, like have her be this moral paragon that goes around Kalos and makes sure everything is right, or even introduce some moral ambiguity about her. All while keeping her mysterious.
Wholeheartedly agree with you on the Leon vs Diantha battle. I mean..it's obvious she prefers skill and strategy over brute force in the anime..she could have used those tactics against him and at least taken down half of his team.
Theyve established diantha to use tactics in her battles. But since the studio thought that showing that in her battle against leon is too much effort so they wrote the kids subplot. Makes you wonder how she end up being sweeped. Where did her tactics go? Did leon use superior strategies this time? Too bad we are not gonna show all of that.
I personally enjoyed everything but the battle, if you’re going to be an undefeated champion, at least have the believability and be well-written to make the result acceptable from Leon’s perspective in which is not and his Charizard isn’t much better either, just because the popularity is high, doesn’t mean it should be the most likable and I like Charizard but I personally don’t like its overrated popularity and marketing; not to mention I personally prefer trainers with skill and strategy like Diantha but that disrespect is atrocious and it saddens me a lot!!! 😖🙁🥺
... Okay... Confession time: First playthrough of Y... I had a team around her levels... And I lost to her because I actually didn't use a Fairy type because I didn't know who was a Fairy type at the time
It boggles my mind that Diantha in a vacuum looks strong, she has the highest level ace out of any champion.. yet that is not really saying much when the rest of the game is easy anyways.. Removing the EXP share also makes X and Y a bit of a slog since it was not made for it being off.. tried once and was very very slow going, just turned it on and had a rotating roster more than other games, at least these later games with the mobile PC box helps, and I just feel like they have balanced the EXP better Also I remember the first time I faced Diantha I had forgotten you met her earlier and was like "oh cool a unique character for the champion fight, I am alright with that" but I also didn't pick up that Malva 1) was the newscaster lady and 2) was part of team flare.. neither mattered anyways but like.. looking back.. there was potential that was never followed through with
X & Y really were thoroughly shafted by the lack of a third version ironing out its kinks. Gen 4 imo wouldn't be half as beloved if Platinum didn't hard carry it.
Such a shame really as she is supposed to be based on Audrey Hepburn herself, and we know how of a timeless classic and iconic she was, while Diantha really didn't get the half of it that she deserves, except for the time she had on the XY Anime... Still one of my faves though despite of it all...
In Gen 6 if you defeat a Pokemon you get a lot more exp than in gens 4 and 5, add that with the exp share and that's one of the reasons why Kalos felt easy. The amount of exp you gain per defeat was fixed in the Alola games, so you don't get as much exp as in Kalos.
There's also the fact that switch training gives all pokemon who were sent out the full Xp for the fight, instead of dividing it between them equally. At least the Exp Share still only gave half to any that didn't get sent out. So if you are smart about it you can easily get your entire team to get full Xp in plenty of battles. Even once you are very overleveled you can still abuse this in Terminus cave to level an entire team up very fast, with little threat. Especially when you throw in the O power giving you a trade level boost on top of that. If you are using a traded pokemon you are getting 4x the amount like that. Adds up extremely fast.
In gen 5 they boosted the base exp gain, but made it so that it scaled with your level vs the opponent’s. In gen 6 they kept that higher exp gain, but got rid of the scaling. And then they brought the scaling back in gen 7.
@@CaptainObliviousV Yeah, it's hilarious that they kept the boosted base exp yield, but then got rid of the scaling, made the exp share stronger, gave you the lucky egg early on, gave you o-powers and made it so you gain exp from catching pokémon. It's nearly impossible to not be hideously overlevelled just by playing the main story.
I think Diantha is strong In story and alright in game and I do think her team is underrated and I do feel Diantha’s battle against Leon was done dirty on her but atleast she got to show her stuff In her battle against Lance unlike Alain was shafted in the first Round I mean it seams the Anime Creaters have something against Kalos Trainers like how the two strongest trainer from that Region both got Swept from battling Leon.
Diantha needed a deeper story and involvement within X & Y. Her team should have been M. Gardevoir, Goodra, Hawlucha, Aegislash, Aurorus, and a protean Greninja along with items. She would have been a tougher champion.
Leon has a Charizard and a Rillaboom and although Flint's not a champion he is close and his ace is an Infernape. So it's not so farfetched for a champion to have a starter Pokemon on their team.
@@futureDreamer4 Not to mention that Blue and Kukui (since he is the final battle before becoming Champion) also had starters as well, so it is possible for Diantha to have a Protean Greninja.
I think they did Diantha and Gardevoir dirty in the anime I mean look at goodra's special attack stat how can rilaboom survive that also how can a gmax wildfire from charizard knock out a stab psychic powered up gmax wildfire combo with max airstream and due to mega evolution with 165 special attack to dish out and 135 special defence also to take the hit
1. Stats are non canon game mechanics. I mean they put a faster than sound dragon slower than a chubby cat. 2. Even if I were to go with you using non canon game mechanics(I'm not, plus for the anime nonetheless), then you're forgetting about levels. You're here acting like they're the same level or something. 3. They did Lance dirty by making him make bad plays and fighting nothing like he did in episode 12 against Leon when facing Diantha, just so she could win and move on. Even when facing Lance they straight up nerfed the first G-Max Wildfire(I mean tell me when did the move start to circle the target instead of hitting them straight on?).
@@luisfillipebeserra2108 Nah, I would of been fine had they not nerfed him and Diantha won, but no, they nerfed him just so she could win and she got destroyed even when they decided to nerf G-Max Wildfire and made it act in a way it never has in the series just so she could have a moment in the final battle.
The problem is the really overpowered pokemon you have with you. Of course the game is easy when xerneas or yveltal (doesn't even matter which one they are both absurd)+ mega lucario act as essentially auto win buttons for you. Then you still have things like the new friendship mechanic from amie that basically grants you the effects of a focus band, bright powder, scope lens, and special ability shed skin while still having a free item slot, Don't forget having access to both full restores and X items as usual.
@@petelee2477 Pretty much. Her team also is just... not good. She somehow manages to have a varied team... that still has weaknesses like a mono-type champ like Lance or Wallace. 4 Pokés weak to ice, 3 weak to steel, 3 weak to the new fairy type... Especially considering that you got a starter, a second starter, a Lapras, a Mega Lucario for free and could catch a Snorlax and get a Steelix for a Luvdisc easily, all of it in the first half of the game.
that she uses the evolved mons of the second gym leader was an odd choice, especially since Aurorus has such an awful typing. They didn't even have it make use of it's Refrigerate ability
@@dewott3754 Blue doesn't use fossils. Lance uses an Aerodactyl as both champ and E4. Wallace doesn't use fossils. Steven famously uses both fossils. Cynthia doesn't use fossils. Alder doesn't use fossils. Iris uses Archeops. Diantha (in)famously uses both fossils. Hau and Kukui don't use fossils. Leon doesn't use fossils. Trace in let's go doesn't use fossils. Nemona and Geeta don't use fossils. I was gonna agree with you, but looking at it, it's actually way less common than one might assume. Only 4 out of 14 champions use a fossil, but imo it feels like more because 2 (Lance and Steven) are very famous for using one, and Diantha also is (in)famous for it. One would also think champions would use pseudo-legendaries constantly, but actually... Lance (Dragonite), Steven (Metagross), Cynthia (Garchomp), Iris (Hydreigon), Diantha (Goodra), Leon (Dragapult) are the ones, which is less than half the champions. Tyranitar doesn't get used by any champ, Salamence and Frigibax get used by the final E4 member, and Kommo-O Imma guess didn't get used because it's a totem pokémon.
Funny thing is that Aurorus, despite its abysmal typing, actually is less of a problem. Tyrantrum is weak to ice, steel and fairy, the three types at least half of Diantha's team is weak to. Same with Hawlucha, who is weak to fairy and ice and cannot counter steel types because of its flying press only doing neutral damage.
I recently did a nuzlocke of Pokémon X with no overleveling turning the exp share on and off depending on when I needed it. Her Gardevoir alone took out half my team so she got more respect from me after that.
I think Diantha is pretty strong and very much underrated. She can knock your block off if you let your guard down around her, although she prefers not to resort to violence. Diantha is a great character that deserves more exposure/ screen time in the anime. I'd love to see some of the movies that she stars in! That would be incredible! Very awesome!
She was really done dirty in Journeys. In the X and Y series, she was shone to easily deal with challengers by simply giving her pokemon head-movements I don't even think anyone was able to land a hit on her aside from Ash. Then in Journeys, her awesome Annabelle-like fighting style was completely retconned, she then gets completely swept by Leon's Rillaboom which Alan handled decently. I get they're trying to show how powerful Leon is but they easily could've just done that with his Aegislash or Dragapult.
During my first playthrough, I actually lost against Diantha due to my entire team being destroyed by her Gardevoir (in addition to a misclick when I tried to Revive 😐). Greninja: Moonblast + Thunderbolt Vivillon: Thunderbolt (also frail) Venusaur: Psychic Tyrantrum: Moonblast Lucario: Frail Xerneas: Inadvertently powered up Moonblast with Fairy Aura I wasn't ready for it.
Why didn't you just set up a Geomancy against aurorus or goodra? Throw in a full restore and maybe one X special defense for good measure if you find yourself needing to stall out light screen before gardevoir shows up.
@@petelee2477 Didn't think about it. I was destroying the rest of her team. Gardevoir straight up wrecked me. Also, I wasn't as good at Pokémon back then. I wasn't a noob, but I didn't use Geomancy much.
She along with Iris is my favorite champion, basically her team has 3 Pokémon that are in my top 10 of favorite Pokémon (Gourgeist, Aurorus and Gardevoir respectively), besides I love her aesthetic, it's so soft and different from the rest of the champions , it gets to be artistic in a way. I think she was underestimated in the anime, being sweeped by a Rillaboom is so revolting that it makes me extremely angry and sad, she as a champion deserved more demonstration of her true power, as her battle with Lance gave only a small taste of it
"Easiest game in the series" is an understatement. I love pokemon x and y. They have some of the coolest pokemon as well as a story, while weaker than most, has a lore richer than even Unova in its entirety. But its ridiculous on how easy it is. You can have level 100 pokemon as early as Camphrier Town. The Battle Chateau can be upgraded to the max as soon as you go inside, making it the ideal place to train and as soon as you do upgrade it, no trainer can hope to match you. Its insane.
XY are prob one of if not the easiest games. That’s why people say she’s weak. Her team is pretty good and after seeing her in the masters 8 she is by far one of the most tactical champions and uses her brain a lot more(looking at you Lance and Steven) Amazing character design and she’s top 4 so Diantha haters can stay mad.
@@Bolt38877 gimmicks are mid, they serve no purpose other to be a flashy cash grab to attract customers. Gen 5 acctually had plot and iris was involved with that. She also had the biggest glow up in history, going from a gym leader to a champion.
I would have loved to see diantha and the elite four around kalos more. they put a lot of character into their design and pre/post-battle banter, and I really think they were wasted potential
I feel XY as a whole emphasized more on beauty and expression than the strength of battle. Being the first 3D main-title Pokemon game, they really tried to sell on the appeal of the Kalos region, in its environments, characters and Pokemon. Diantha has a lot of style and I love her aesthetics, she's definitely a very appealing character to me. I feel she could've been shown to be a bigger challenge had the game not made it so easy to defeat her.
I personally think comparing the champion to the player with their infinite choices is a mistake in deciding if a champion is the weakest, I could’ve gone to victory road in DPP and just grinded myself to level 100 and breezed my way through the league calling it the easiest because I didn’t do the same with those leagues, no matter how unlikely my scenario it’s still a possible scenario as such a much better way to determine which champion is the strongest is to determine it like with the strongest teams, determine at what likelihood one champion would best another and the one champion that can best the most other champion’s teams.
Eh, comparing how each champion *feels* to fight as a player given the resources each game gives you is a worthwhile exercise. But so would be, say, building their teams in the latest generation with a pokedex comprehensive enough to do it with and pitting them against each other in a number of AI-vs-AI battles.
@@MrMonkey2150 none of them have as the only level 100 Pokémon we’ve seen is optional post game content which canonicity is questionable and other player characters.
I feel so much of x and y goes into undermining the challenge of the champion fight, the exp share rework, mega evolutions, the very popular and powerful gift pokemon you receive, etc. I'll argue though she does have a lot going for her all things considered with a well rounded team, lots of coverage moves, and a fairly strong ace pokemon. It really is a shame we never got to see her true potential.
I’m gonna be honest… I didn’t even recognize her when I walked into the final battle. I was like who IS this..?? I obviously missed some story stuff, but yeah… wish she had more time to shine prior.
When I first played X and Y I was only using new gen pokemon, which meant no megas, and I also turned off the Exp Share. Diantha's Gardevoir almost sweeped my entire team, I was left with only my Florges in a semi stall battle where I had to rely on Moonblast's sp atk drops to win lol Probably my most memorable champion battle, which made it really jarring when I realized the consensus on her was that she was laughably weak
Gen 6 were my first Pokémon games, so having no prior experience with other champions I actually enjoyed how the game portrayed her. I never once thought maybe she’d be champion, so to reach the end of the Elite 4 and step into that chamber, only to see the movie star I’ve heard about all game standing there, was a nice surprise.
For me the biggest problem with Diantha, is that the other gym leaders and league itself is incredibly weak. I was really hoping that at least the Champion would give me a challenge. Buuuuut MY DELPHOX WAS ABLE TO TAKE OUT HER ENTIRE TEAM. It's why I love Delphox so much; she singlehandedly TOOK OUT THE CHAMPION. I had her run Shadow Ball, Mystical Fire, Power Up Punch, and Psychic. I didn't need to switch her out at all because my move set was so diverse. Her name was Azula and she was just a POWERHOUSE. XY were fun at the time, but I can't remember the last time I played them, cause they're just disappointingly easy. What a joke. And yeah, the anime made her and several other game characters into cool characters; Leon, Diantha, Misty, Brock, even regular non League people like Gladion went from just being there to a REALLY interesting character in the anime...The anime made Diantha into such a cool and interesting character, the anime gave gym leaders MEGA EVOLUTION FOR THOSE WHO HAD IT why was the anime for X and Y a better XY experience THAN THE GAMES THEY'RE BASED ON? Not to mention Ash is such a chad in that anime. God he was so cool.
Possible that the anime writers saw the opportunities to expand on and improve the Gen 6 ideas, in the way that we never got a third version to do. There was a ton of room to improve on X and Y, not hard to see ways to make it better, especially given that the anime has time to flesh things out where in the game every major event felt rushed and underdeveloped. Plus after they dropped the ball so damn hard with Ash in Unova, they just learned from their own mistakes and didn't do that again. Making Ash actually as competent as he should be by his 6th region, that alone was a huge credit to the X and Y anime. So maybe they learned from and corrected both their own and GF's mistakes with this season?
Honestly, I think Diantha in the games suffers from a pretty underwhelming introduction scene where she gets overshadowed by the game's main villain. Lysandre: Don't you wish you could remain young and be an actress forever. Diantha: Nah fam I'm good. Anyway, toodles. I've got a scene to get back to. (Skips away with her little purse.)
So I recently played Pokémon Y with the intention of beating the champion in the battle Chateau before making it to the Pokémon League.... Turns out I can't do that, so by the time I faced Corrina, almost all of my Pokémon were fully evolved and pretty overleveled. So I didn't really bother to train them that much and by the time I arrived at the Pokémon league my Pokémon were around the same level as Diantha's. She almost beat me with her Guardevoir, because I underestimated her. She nowadays is easy to beat, because I'm not a newby anymore, but we shouldn't make the mistake of underestimating her. 9yo me was struggleing way more in the Pokémon League, and while I forgot how exactly the fight against her went, I remember clearly how rewarding it felt to even get to battle her, and how suprised I was that she is the champion of Kalos. Something else, if you really take your time and try to take everything in Pokémon XY have to offer, the games are really great, after years of doupting that due to their "too easy" reputation I can savely recommend them with all of my heart.
Another way that Journeys did her dirty in her battle with Leon was that they only showed bits of the battle cause the episode was too focused on random kids
Honestly, I think Diantha is a fine champion. She may be weaker compared to Steven, Leon, or Cynthia, but She's still strong. And actually, I remember beating her with relative ease in X and Y, but it was always with me being worried about if my attacks would KO Diantha's Pokemon. And Gourgeist has given me trouble when it comes to the times when I'd use Charizard sometimes and she'd inflict massive damage with Phantom Force after using Trick or Treat. But otherwise, other than Tyrantrum and Goodra, the rest of her team was relatively easy to beat. And I've used her team(In a more improved way) in Pokemon showdown, and it does a pretty good job. But my only question is what would everyone's picks be to make Diantha's team stronger and possibly make it easier for her to beat Leon or Steven. But I'll say this, NO Champion is an opponent to be taken lightly. And I think that she definitely didn't deserve being swept like that. The only Pokemon that deserved to sweep her team anyway is Leon's Terrifying Ace of Aces Charizard.
As someone who beat X and Y without experience share, with two completely different teams. I must say: she can be a decent challenge, but it depends on the team. In my X try, I used a bulky tram which wasn't very fast, and her battle was kind of hard (conaider I don't use the backpack during battles) Meanwhile, the Y try was much easier with a fast all offensive team, except for Floregess, and I had a much easier time with her. She definitely put more of a challenge to me than Lance and Green (gen 1, 2, 3 and 4), but still wouldn't put her next to Steven, Cynthia, Alder or Iris. She is decent, but the games did her dirty with the experience share.
This has nothing to do with Diantha, but the lucario given to you in X and Y is my favorite partner pokemon of all time, I have transferred him to every game since (no exaggeration, he went to Alpha Sapphire, Moon, Ultra Sun, Shield, and now PLA) and he is my best friend, the reason lucario is my favorite pokemon. I got him to level 100 recently, maybe within the past 2 years, and I can't imagine a game without my Luke
Funny enough, Gen 6 is one of my favorite Pokémon gens. While I never stopped playing Pokémon games (I was 16 when Red/Blue came out), Pokemon X/Y is when my son got into playing the opposite game from me…so those games will always hold a special place in my heart…and they tend to be the games I revisit the most
I can say that this fight between Leon and Diantha was ruined... Ruined by filler. And that's no good, especially in Champion vs Champion fight. Also, Diantha should've knocked 3 or 4 Leon's pokemon. At least that would've been logical. But Leon is Gary Stu, so...
Flying Press’ coverage is so weird to me. It loses Flying’s effectiveness against Bug-types and Fighting’s effectiveness against both Rock and Steel-types. If anything, it provides less coverage than it would as two separate attacks.
Fighting coverage- rock, steel, dark, ice, normal (5) Flying coverage- bug, grass, fighting (3) Flying press- dark, ice, normal, grass, fighting (5) Hmm... neat. Same amount of coverage. No one's really stopping you from having flying press and a regular fighting type move though. Besides, unless you wanna do competitive, do you really wanna take out a signature move?
I feel like gourgeist is another weak point on her team. There are 4 starter Pokemon you can choose in game that have a type advantage over her gourgeist. Gourgeist isn't also that fast (exception is the small size, but hers is average size).
Diantha suffers from XY syndrome. If she wasn't in XY she could've been much more formidable. But, I don't think she's the easiest. Alder & Leon just feel much much easier then her when you account for how the difficulty scales.
If I was to develop an EXP share, I'd let the players choose from 3 different options like, Low ( Lower distribution of exp among party mons) Medium (A normal distribution of exp) High (Higher distribution i. e. I'd say maximum) Off setting for the players to change as per their requirements even mid-game.
I think X&Y just gave use really overpowered pokemon to fight with. Outside of getting 2 starters you also get mega lucario as well as either xerneas or yveltal. All of these pokemon being incredibly powerful even in ubers
Yup. You got a starter, a second starter to complement the starter, you get a high-BST powerful Snorlax thrown your way story-wise, get a fossil pokémon with 521 BST, can trade a Luvdisc for a fucking Steelix... All before the second gym with minimum effort and deviation from the main plot path. After gym 3, it gets worse since you get a mega lucario and a Lapras for free. Even putting megas aside, your average BST for pokémon you either got for free or had to take absolute minimum effort (catch one Luvdisc and trade, catch the Snorlax literally in your way) is a staggering 527.5. Combine that with the busted exp share, no scaling, exp for catching, o-powers, an early lucky egg and whatnot, not being hideously overlevelled became a huge challenge.
GF gave players a crapton of tools to make X and Y a complete cakewalk and didn't balance the game around them at all. In theory, the only way to make Diantha challenging is by actively not using these tools (free OP Pokemon, Exp Share, Mega Evolution), but that's something I've never tried myself.
Like, you get a free Mega Lucario by end of gym 3. If it wasnt for hms, you could prob solo the game with him much easier than usual. Gyms are a good matchup, E4 is a joke, and Lucario destroys Diantha. Kalos is foolproof easy.
She didn't get enough representation for sure. I remember things about every champion, from some games more than others, but with Kalos I genuinely couldn't even remember her name. My first thought when clicking this video was "who is that?"
She deserved better cause her team isnt that bad. I have to say tho that i love kalos but i agree that the difficulty is below ground, i spent 2/3 of the game with my starter more or less 💀💀 Such a shame because its a beautiful region with an incredible story
They really just need to bring back challenge mode from B2. Especially with how they continue to shove mechanics like friendship boosts, exp share and stuff into your face without being able to turn it off. Just... have it in the option menu "friendship perks" "exp share" "set/shift battle style" (at least the last one isn't as detrimental since even shift style being forced just means you have to click B one more time per pokémon).
Idk man, as someone that played without the EXP Share on, and still wiped the floor with her without too much grinding iirc, I really don't think that all of the problems with her amount to the free exp the game gave you; I'd say it would be more because of her dumbed down AI honestly (and, as you mentioned, the multiple options for coverage that Kalos had available)... Cause she had a solid team with great coverage! (Even with the fossils, which even with their lame weaknesses, are both pretty good Pokémon) I think she just wasn't given a 'brain' to use it, contrary to her anime counterpart.
Geeta has entered the chat. Matter a fact she is the chat. She created the chat and labeled it The Shittiest of Shitbox trainers and top of the list is Geeta. Makes Diantha and Trace look like Cynthia hypertrained them in her school of Massive Meat Thunder Clappers.
It really is a shame that X&Y pulled back on the Trainers' life outside battling, B2W2 actuallly had more acting representation in the side-mission for Pokestar Studios. The Kalos Elite four and Champion is really the most underwhelming for me, personally. Feels like squandered potential as I liked their designs.
Honestly, she feels like a run-of-the-mill champion. I remember struggling against her because my team somehow was weak to Psychic, Fairy, Electric and ghost bar Lucario, yet somehow Delphox was able to deal tons of damage with fire blast. I was around level 60 at that point. In retrospective it was the fact every other battle was easy after getting Lucario what made me not play with strategy, and overstimating the bulk of Drifblim.
It also didn't help that the exp share was based on the pokemon that fought the opponent pokemon instead of personalized like Sword and Shield. You were better off fighting with a weaker pokemon of it meant that the pokemon in front gets an exp boost for defeating a stronger pokemon while the other pokemon gets half of that experience, regardless if it was a lvl 1 Pidgy or a lvl 70 Goodra. That Goodra alone would have gotten less than what the weaker pokemon gave it. They finally balanced it out in the later games, seeing how experience gain is now based on how much the pokemon would have gotten if they fought it which is then divided by two if they didn't. That Sword and Shield exp example actually showed that with how Corvinight got only a measly 10 exp compared to the rest of the low level pokemon.
In hindsight i think the lucario thing could have been solved if it was a newly hatched riolu that bonded with Calem/Serena and that why korrina give it to and later on in the game you take the same riolu back to her a lucario to get the mega stone. it wouldn't solve the power balance issue but at least you wouldn't be handed a tank pokemon in the first third of the game right after being given a mega capable starter.
The rules I follow for every Pokémon game is - Only Pokémon from that generation If none exist, use a Pokémon you didn’t use before No repeats from previous games (regional variants don’t count) Since I used Lucario in Gen 4 and the Kanto starters I never used the perks XY gave… and still beat Diantha on the first try.
Ever since I've watched the XYZ anime, Diantha was and always will be my favourite champion. Mainly because she's super cool and she's a part of my favourite Pokemon gen 🥰
I will never be convinced otherwise that AZ wouldn't have a better champion for Kalos. He had so much build up and legitimately interesting backstory, that I thought he was going to be revealed as this ancient seasoned trainer at the end of the journey (I did not read ahead on the identity to surprise myself when I first played). Only to be unimpressed with a character I entirely forgot existed/meeting in the early game. Also, in regards to ease (and I know this is entirely subjective based on team comp, movesets, and stuff): even with my levels being lower than hers (I switched off EXP share a lot), and using a less optimal Mega (Charizard X instead of Lucario) for the fight, she still only took out one mon on my team (My Goodra after fighting both hers and the Mega Gardevoir). I can't quite explain what makes her so easy, maybe her typings have too many exploits in general, maybe her movesets aren't as strong as they could be, maybe the game just offers too wide a variety in pokemon you can use in the game. But even me being someone who does the "use my favorites, strategy be darned", she certainly lacked in challenge compared to others.
Diantha is the only champion where you can set up in front of their first pokemon and sweep. Aegislash alone can solo Diantha if you Swords Dance 3 times in front of her Hawlucha and her entire team just folds because of how broken it is in gen 6, how exploitable her team composition is and the AI not being smart. (She's not the only Kalos trainer that loses to the Honedge line effortlessly *cough cought* Korrina).
@@artimist0315 oh absolutely, but very few Pokemon games from prior gen 6 completely fold to 1 single Mon that aren't legendaries during a normal playthrough. Most pseudo-legendaries are balanced around being mid/late pokemon that have a low growth rate and take a while to evolve. Some games it takes a while to get good moves as they might limit on what good tm's are available before the post game or have a average movepool through leveling up until the high levels. The honedge line are easy to catch and raise and can be caught during the early game. Doublade with evolite is almost unkillable so it's easy to set up SD and sweep. Korrina has no moves that can hit them for even neutral damage, grass doesn't do much damage so free set up, fairy gets KO'd easily, Psychic folds, ice gym doesn't even have a full moveset so easy win. The AI struggle to deal with Aegislash as they make very dumb moves such as keeping a pokemon in that is hard walled against Aegislash and allows you to set up for a sweep. The only pokemon that breaks the game of their respective gens that comes to mind for me would be the Krookadile line in gen 5 because of how easily you can snowball with moxie
Gamfreak did surely messed up with this edition since every fight is super easy and the items like exp. gives you on top of that a huge advantage. 1. They just put some attacks in every pokemon and didnt think about a battle style whatsover. For example one pokemon of the 8th gym leader had a pokemon with only 3 moves. 2. you can set up on diantha with almost any pokemon, you can pick a lvl 40 aegisslash into the team and run her down. 3. Shedinja locks down almost every pokemon of her
I often think of what could of been in a third Kalos game. Specifically in this case: how would Diantha been different? The teams always change a little in the third version, usually a little tougher. The story could of been tweaked a little too... who knows.
Diantha needs a more balanced team. With such an expanded Pokédex, I don’t understand why she only used kalos pokemon. Having two fossil Pokémon was absolutely stupid.
If there was a Z version, I'd have Diantha be a post-game boss and Korrina as Champion. Also, Diantha gets a rematch with Pangoro replacing Hawlucha and Arcanine replacing Tyrantrum.
Love yourself first and most Believe in yourself Quitters never win and winners never quit Don't give up and never give in Ignore those who try to discourage you Hang on to your dreams Take control of own destiny Take care of yourself Keep moving forward Stand up for yourself Stand tall and be brave Stay strong Act of kindness people
Her team comp is decent but the biggest weakness is def their move pools. Hawlucha is extremely easy to set up on and just sweep her entire team. The exp share can be a factor but is not at all the reason why she was so easy
I honestly think when it comes to the discussion of difficulty especially these days when there are a lot of mons to choose from; for well seasoned players who have been playing since at least gen 3 who fully understand type advantages and coverage there isn't going to be a battle that is just hard unless you go in under leveled or if the opp is using a lot of held items which hasn't happened really since Gen 4
I really feel the creators should have created more pokemons in Kalos which should've been competitive considering a Champion Also good stats And Also some useful ability for Mega Gardevoir
A way to make x and y harder is to change teams out between gym battles etc. if you stick with only one team of course you’re going to be over-levelled but with alternating teams, not so much.
During my first playthrough of Pokemon Y, all of my Pokémon were between levels 65 and 70. She was the easiest for me to defeat: 1. Greninja took down Hawlucha and Gourgeist 2. Garchomp took down Aurorus, Tyrantrum and Goodra 3. Mega-Charizard Y took down Mega-Gardevior.
I really wish trainers would hit 6 pokemon more. Its something that varies from game to game but I'd love to see a somewhat standard formula where the first gym leader is 2 pokemon, the second has 3, and then after that every other gym leader adds one to their roster, which would give the 8th gym leader a full team, and then some of the victory road trainers and all of the elite 4 could follow up with their own full teams. I also think you could ramp the difficulty of elite 4 more if you let the trainer heal between battles. Currently you can with items but I think some players wont always do so and I'd imagine gamefreak accounts for that with balance.
I will have to say that I didn’t use the free Lucario cause i found one early in the game without knowing I was gonna get a new one later. That Lucario has followed me even to Sword and Shield. This is when I found out Lucario was my favorite, not cause of its hype but cause it’s my pikachu.
The gift Lucario is actually the worst possible Lucario you can get in X and Y without trading or modding the game. Baby pokemon in X and Y have guaranteed max IVs in at least 3 stats, and you can only catch wild Riolu, not wild Lucario. The gift Lucario, meanwhile, has an IV spread of 6/25/16/25/19/31 every time, and a guaranteed Hasty nature, both of which make it a speedy but frail mixed attacker.
@@zimmerwald1915 yeah I found a Riolu, I was so excited when I saw him. Yeah X&Y & Sun and Moon were the first games I played coming back to the franchise since Gen 3 so I didn’t know anything g about IVs and natures.
I really hope it does. In her first battle, Diantha should use her current team but make better use of Moves and Abilities. For example, Tyrantrum should have Rock Head to compliment Head Smash and both Aurorus and Gardevoir should have Hyper Voice for Refrigerate and Pixilate respectively. Heck, in Legends Arceus, Gardevoir can even learn Aura Sphere, so she should have access to that in the Kalos remakes. In the rematch, Diantha should replace Aurorus and Tyrantrum. Blissey would suit her but I'm not sure what her other replacement should be. Maybe Eelectross since it has no type weakness, or perhaps Arcanine to Intimidate Pokemon and provide Fire coverage. Another change should be that, instead of the useless Attack boost Mega Gardevoir gets right now, her Defence gets boosted by Mega Evolution.
Can we talk about how Leon's Rillaboom took a Fire Blast head on in that fight with Diantha and it was barely affected. Gotta love Plot Armor.
@@matthewkuscienko4616 well Leon's Rillaboom defeated 5 of her pokemon
It was just like leon vs alain
Ratio of both them taking Down Leons pokemon remains 1/3
Assualt vest? Plus non stab low roll fire blast on let’s say above average iv and ev rilaboom
The battle against Lance was actually not bad though.
@@MysticUmbreon Indeed. It really showcased why she deserves to be a champion.
Leon is a Gary Sue with Plot Armor.
Hard to enjoy him.
@@jpmedina8328 pretty normal since Rillaboom has a wall breaker moves and pretty much agile, while Chesnaught has a pretty good defense, better than Gorgeist
but hey, look at the positive view, she at least damaged Leon’s Charizard with Thunderbolt and controled its Gmax Wildfire, also she took out 2 of Leon’s Pokémon
that’s a pretty good one tbh
It would have been cool to see banners of Diantha’s face throughout the region and had strangers raving about how cool she is. Something that can be viewed differently on the first playthrough (oh, she’s really popular) than on later runs, since that would all be recontextualised with that foreknowledge.
If memory serves, they do actually do that... if only just once. Something like a giant display screen in Lumiose featuring her in an ad, and two NPCs looking up at it while making a comment about her.
Hope I'm not misremembering it, though :P

In Coumarine city someone says how excited she is to have seen Diantha at the train station.
There is a hotel where someone will tell you about Diantha, as well as some cafés.
Then we have the billboard,
and honestly Pokémon XY have so many people to talk to, as well as a TV in the Pokémon center with actual shows on it (though they're just dialogues) She probably is mentioned on other places as well.
It sucks how ridiculously easy X/Y where with and without the experience share on, but on a side note even though you don't encounter her very often Diantha has a certain charm about her that I love which makes her one of my top favorite champions.
I’ve always liked her too. Infact, her champion theme slaps.
My favorite part about her is her teams theme
Hawlucha showing action movies
Tyrantrum and Auroras showing prehistoric movies
Gourgeist showing horror movies
Goodra showing medieval movies
Gardevoir showing romance movies

I had my Drednaw set up stealth rock at the start and when Charizard came out the rocks took out half of it's hp my un-dynamax boltund took it out with wild charge.
I know what you mean...honestly I loved how relaxing XY is...and as my first ever Pokémon game it's pretty nostalgic.
I am glad the EXP Share was how it was in these games and ORAS I prefer easy games
as someone who thrived in black and white 2, it felt like I was a champion exploring kalos, like the game rewarded me for my past deeds and didn't take me as some kind of novice who was "just entering the world"
The fight with diantha felt more like a "we're 2 champions seeing who's best" rather than "she's so much better than me and I'm a scrub"
The EXP share being on even let me customize a "champion team" for the big fight, so I felt like kalos was a celebration rather than a war.
I feel like you can tell many intriguing stories with her, like have her be this moral paragon
that goes around Kalos and makes sure everything is right, or even introduce some moral ambiguity about her. All while keeping her mysterious.
Wholeheartedly agree with you on the Leon vs Diantha battle. I mean..it's obvious she prefers skill and strategy over brute force in the anime..she could have used those tactics against him and at least taken down half of his team.
I would say she prefers acting over battle.
Not saying she can't battle well. But, I couldn't see Leon vs Cynthia ending the same way.

Can you please tell me how to play Pokemon Y in Android?
It boggles my mind that Diantha in a vacuum looks strong, she has the highest level ace out of any champion.. yet that is not really saying much when the rest of the game is easy anyways..
Removing the EXP share also makes X and Y a bit of a slog since it was not made for it being off.. tried once and was very very slow going, just turned it on and had a rotating roster more than other games, at least these later games with the mobile PC box helps, and I just feel like they have balanced the EXP better
Also I remember the first time I faced Diantha I had forgotten you met her earlier and was like "oh cool a unique character for the champion fight, I am alright with that" but I also didn't pick up that Malva 1) was the newscaster lady and 2) was part of team flare.. neither mattered anyways but like.. looking back.. there was potential that was never followed through with
X & Y really were thoroughly shafted by the lack of a third version ironing out its kinks. Gen 4 imo wouldn't be half as beloved if Platinum didn't hard carry it.

Diantha's theme in X/Y slaps so hard she automatically becomes top 3 champions. This fact is irrefutable.
X/Y are also the first games where you gain experience by catching a Pokémon other than defeating it.

Kalos's league was the last that gave Ash trouble, so of course its representatives were going to job.
Still harder than Iris
Diantha needed a deeper story and involvement within X & Y. Her team should have been M. Gardevoir, Goodra, Hawlucha, Aegislash, Aurorus, and a protean Greninja along with items. She would have been a tougher champion.
_Game Freak doesn't like to give starters to the champs so Greninja isn't really an option._
Leon has a Charizard and a Rillaboom and although Flint's not a champion he is close and his ace is an Infernape. So it's not so farfetched for a champion to have a starter
Pokemon on their team.

Every trainer can be weak if you are over-leveled. To really evaluate Diantha's team (or any other team), you must be the same level as her team.
The problem is the really overpowered pokemon you have with you.
Of course the game is easy when xerneas or yveltal (doesn't even matter which one they are both absurd)+ mega lucario act as essentially auto win buttons for you.
Then you still have things like the new friendship mechanic from amie that basically grants you the effects of a focus band, bright powder, scope lens, and special ability shed skin while still having a free item slot,
Don't forget having access to both full restores and X items as usual.

@@youtube-kit9450 Modern Champions don't but when looking at just the Champions that were around when x and y came out it was a common thing
I recently did a nuzlocke of Pokémon X with no overleveling turning the exp share on and off depending on when I needed it. Her Gardevoir alone took out half my team so she got more respect from me after that.

Even after doing this my swanna took out half her team
Greninja: Moonblast + Thunderbolt
Vivillon: Thunderbolt (also frail)
Venusaur: Psychic
Tyrantrum: Moonblast
Lucario: Frail
Xerneas: Inadvertently powered up Moonblast with Fairy Aura
I wasn't ready for it.
I enjoy dark types and i also lost to her mega gardevoir😂
Yeah, I beat her entire team multiple times but lost at Mega Gardevoir.
It took a few tries before I finally succeeded in defeating that beast.
I do love seeing a pokemon use it's strength as a weakness (the whole fairy aura situation)
She was.. then we met Geeta.
I want more Diantha and Cynthia moments.
They seem like they would be very close friends
She along with Iris is my favorite champion, basically her team has 3 Pokémon that are in my top 10 of favorite Pokémon (Gourgeist, Aurorus and Gardevoir respectively), besides I love her aesthetic, it's so soft and different from the rest of the champions , it gets to be artistic in a way. I think she was underestimated in the anime, being sweeped by a Rillaboom is so revolting that it makes me extremely angry and sad, she as a champion deserved more demonstration of her true power, as her battle with Lance gave only a small taste of it
Hm, interesting, I think she has potential and I’d like to see her be presented more.

While I agree with you there is a clear difference between strong champions and weak ones and I think it’s safe to assume not every had a lv 100😂😂.

I’m gonna be honest… I didn’t even recognize her when I walked into the final battle. I was like who IS this..?? I obviously missed some story stuff, but yeah… wish she had more time to shine prior.
Same for me. Completely forgot about her.

Mmmmm
Naming fire types after characters from the ATLA fire kingdom is a classic move
Why would you run Power Up Punch on Delphox when your other moves are Special?

In my X try, I used a bulky tram which wasn't very fast, and her battle was kind of hard (conaider I don't use the backpack during battles)
Meanwhile, the Y try was much easier with a fast all offensive team, except for Floregess, and I had a much easier time with her.
She definitely put more of a challenge to me than Lance and Green (gen 1, 2, 3 and 4), but still wouldn't put her next to Steven, Cynthia, Alder or Iris.
She is decent, but the games did her dirty with the experience share.
We should be able to see some of Diantha's movies. I hope we get to when or if we get more Kalos games.
I'll be Diantha Stan forever so underrated and disrespected
This has nothing to do with Diantha, but the lucario given to you in X and Y is my favorite partner pokemon of all time, I have transferred him to every game since (no exaggeration, he went to Alpha Sapphire, Moon, Ultra Sun, Shield, and now PLA) and he is my best friend, the reason lucario is my favorite pokemon. I got him to level 100 recently, maybe within the past 2 years, and I can't imagine a game without my Luke
Funny enough, Gen 6 is one of my favorite Pokémon gens. While I never stopped playing Pokémon games (I was 16 when Red/Blue came out), Pokemon X/Y is when my son got into playing the opposite game from me…so those games will always hold a special place in my heart…and they tend to be the games I revisit the most
Boi that title be fightin words
I can say that this fight between Leon and Diantha was ruined...
Ruined by filler. And that's no good, especially in Champion vs Champion fight.
Also, Diantha should've knocked 3 or 4 Leon's pokemon. At least that would've been logical. But Leon is Gary Stu, so...
Flying Press’ coverage is so weird to me. It loses Flying’s effectiveness against Bug-types and Fighting’s effectiveness against both Rock and Steel-types. If anything, it provides less coverage than it would as two separate attacks.
Fighting coverage- rock, steel, dark, ice, normal (5)
Flying coverage- bug, grass, fighting (3)
Flying press- dark, ice, normal, grass, fighting (5)
Hmm... neat. Same amount of coverage. No one's really stopping you from having flying press and a regular fighting type move though. Besides, unless you wanna do competitive, do you really wanna take out a signature move?
I actually made a Diantha team that balances types a little more, so one fairy type won’t absolutely curb-stomp her

Diantha suffers from XY syndrome. If she wasn't in XY she could've been much more formidable. But, I don't think she's the easiest. Alder & Leon just feel much much easier then her when you account for how the difficulty scales.
If I was to develop an EXP share, I'd let the players choose from 3 different options like,

Medium (A normal distribution of exp)
High (Higher distribution i. e. I'd say maximum)

Diantha isn’t the weakest Champion. That title belongs to Geeta.

The most underrated and overhated Champion.
Also that megaLucario would be a solid counter to megaGardevoir, so that's half of her team with just 1 pokemon, that you are guaranteed to get

Keep it up on your work and this video and channel
Diantha is the only champion where you can set up in front of their first pokemon and sweep. Aegislash alone can solo Diantha if you Swords Dance 3 times in front of her Hawlucha and her entire team just folds because of how broken it is in gen 6, how exploitable her team composition is and the AI not being smart. (She's not the only Kalos trainer that loses to the Honedge line effortlessly *cough cought* Korrina).
I mean Aegislash was completely broken anyways, there is a reason why it was the first banned mon from gen6, and it's typing is absolutely fantastic.

Considering how much gen 4 was hard-carried by Platinum, Pokémon Z fixing so many things definitely was absolutely needed.
I wonder if her getting whooped so hard was a reference to her insanely easy battle
Il ike XY casual approach. A minor note: after Diantha you have to fight a 2nd boss without redrawing your moves, which adds a bit of flavour too.

Her team comp is decent but the biggest weakness is def their move pools. Hawlucha is extremely easy to set up on and just sweep her entire team. The exp share can be a factor but is not at all the reason why she was so easy
This analysis was good enough. You did well.

IN-Game yes! but not the anime plus Pokemon are making the games easy nowadays....
A way to make x and y harder is to change teams out between gym battles etc. if you stick with only one team of course you’re going to be over-levelled but with alternating teams, not so much.
During my first playthrough of Pokemon Y, all of my Pokémon were between levels 65 and 70. She was the easiest for me to defeat:

Its something that varies from game to game but I'd love to see a somewhat standard formula where the first gym leader is 2 pokemon, the second has 3, and then after that every other gym leader adds one to their roster, which would give the 8th gym leader a full team, and then some of the victory road trainers and all of the elite 4 could follow up with their own full teams.
I also think you could ramp the difficulty of elite 4 more if you let the trainer heal between battles. Currently you can with items but I think some players wont always do so and I'd imagine gamefreak accounts for that with balance.

Love the thumbnail!
Cant wait for a X and Y remake to give Diantha the respect she deserves
