  • Our guest this week is Lt (Rtd) Joseph Sabena, a soldier who fought and was gravely wounded during the Liberation War (1990-1994). He joins us to discuss his life growing up as a Rwandan refugee in Uganda, surviving the camps, joining the Ugandan army in 1987 and later the RPF-Inkotanyi in the Virunga mountains. He also takes us to the fateful day that he lost his ability to walk and how he has managed to live with his disability.

As a Ugandan Munyarwanda i really appreciate these great men who went back and reclaimed their homeland and stopped the genocide against Tutsis and ushered in a progressive nation for all Rwandese regardless of their ethnicity. My grandparents with their 3 children also fled Rwanda but luckily enough they didn't end up in a refugee camp and they got their life together outside the camps where one of grandfather had stayed for years before 1959. Our family would occasionally go to refugee camps to check on our people and in the period of when Rwakasisi was chassing Banyarwanda in western Uganda, some of Banyarwanda friends stayed at our home untill the situation normalised.

Then it explains why most of my friends when i was growing up they had kiganda names, but now they have Rwandan names. When i was growing it never crossed my mind that they were Banyarwanda, cos they belonged to various clans of Buganda and they new all the details of those clans they belonged too. I must say they were all bright guys.

You got a point…actually that is kigandenglish…but the journalist is fluent….I wonder why you talking about liberation war when you were killing each other between negroes of the same tribes, language and culture…in fact you liberates from foreign, colonizer so on…but finally you fkn exterminated between your similarity…try to find the right name of those tribalism wars…
Other…99% people speak kinyarwanda..you got better use the language minority understand..thanks
