- Aimi playing the first movement of Beethoven's Waldstein sonata at the 16th M&P's Tea concert, Nagoya, Japan. The recital was given on 25 October 2009, a month after her 14th birthday.
Sorry about the poor colour quality of the facing camera. The original image is almost entirely pinky-rose (mis-set white spot), so we did the best we could to bring it round the colour wheel.
2nd and 3rd movements:

Very well played! The best recording of Beethoven that I’ve heard on UA-cam (To my taste)
Beautifully nuanced playing. I like how Aimi never seemed to lose sight of the "big picture" of the piece. Thanks for sharing this.
Aimi, you bring beauty and passion to all the music you play - thank you for sharing it with us
She is incredibly talented and plays with great beauty. I enjoy watching her motions as well :P
What an amazing play! Aimi, you already are a pianist of great sensitivity and emotional depth...
Thank you so much dear Christina for sharing this wonderful performance with me. It is of course vintage Aimi and what more needs to be said on that score. Thanks also to Romilly for making this clip available.
Love

October 25, 2009 Nagoya, the first movement of Beethoven's Waldstein LV is quite splendid, dear Romilly a great accomplishment for this first movement. Waiting impatiently Following this outstanding performance. Thank you for this wonderful sharing.

Aimi is our future! Such greatness is within her abilities!
Aimi, you continue to grow and develop as a pianist! I have heard you in NYC in concert live and you are such an inspiration!
Much love to you from New York,
Diane
Beautiful performance , a lot of the good for art ツ
She always brings out a very nice interpretation, even when she was very small.
Beautiful performance!
Thanks for sharing this wonderful performance by Aimi with us. Listened many times as usual. Many thanks!
I love Aimi Kobayashi.
I prefer to see her play, instead of hearing her play. Pure emotion.
Amazing pianist! Wonderful!
How wonderful to stumble upon these beautiful quality and recent clips of Aimi performing my favorite Beethoven sonata! She has matured the performance about a year before this one - I think there is better concentration and more restraint in appropriate places, without compromising her unique sound or expressiveness. I hope I will be able to attend her Carnegie Hall performance!
@FailedViolinist: I don't understand those comments either... Aimi's unique interpretative skill are her strength!.
Fantastic!!!
bravo this great performence
Fabulous, Aimi.. Can't wait for the NYC Carnegie Hall recital in the Spring.
Particularly like the dramatic build up, and interspersed lyrical sections.
Elbows in and out, over all technique what I advocate and admire.. Amazing, expansive, big motions.
How splendid! She will surely a name to the history of music.
Very talented young girl. If, at that age, she already plays that well, I see great things in her future.
DO NOT PROBLEMS WITH COLOR. LISTEN IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ! SHE HAS THE RIGHT ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE SCORE
only one word
Incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
shes a genius :] very good aimi
LOVE this piece! I wouldn't ever even attempt to play this. There are some pieces that simply are better left alone for my horrible talent. Including Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. But Especially this! lol
Aimi, you're the best female player of all time! This is great! Thanks for posting it.
Some people play perfectly, but it is without emotion.
Some people play ugly, but it has emotion.
You are too pure, to be judged.
Watching the video if you have a sensibily that goes beyond the technique you can discover Aimi as a unique corp with the instrument and can be understood even without watching....She is wonderful and he gentle trait is unique. She is caressing the board and you can here the single note anyway without exasperate the technique as Master Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli used to do...Aimi express love this is the difference that makes her unique.

Bravo!
She's closing her eyes to. Dang she is good
really talented, born to do this. Incredible!
@HuggumsMcgehee
I think Aimi, Lang Lang and others produce a very big, all encompassing tone, with a palette of varied dynamics, using physical resources beyond the fingers.
Asians possess DEDICATION and SERENITY. Who cares how she moves? Not me. I'll bet people who feel superior when criticizing this little pearl can't even handle a pair of chopsticks. Okay, I don't much like her party frock. Happy now?
Can't believe this is this year's laureate of the Chopin Competition.
SHE IS DIVINE AND CAMES FROM SUN FGROM ALST LIFE TO GIVE MERVIOUSEST FOR HUMANITY ON EARTH .
nice!
@elrondsch/@fredricfranc - If the music is so important, but you don't like her manner of performance, then just shut your eyes. She's incredible, a prodigy, and they set their own rules, don't pay much attention to yours. You'd bitch if your manna was 15 minutes late, or you had to walk an extra 25 yards for it!
@HawaiianTropicZone
Lucky you.. Give us a rundown and review when the time comes.. Shirley K
That's true !!
@HuggumsMcgehee But she is a princess =)
I get great pleasure this private video sent by cristeny. A big thank you to Romilly videographer for this production. Obviously we would like to share with the world? ...
Music starts at 2:07
Please, never do contests again.
For me, you are the best.
Judges are fake.
Right 👍
@arioso7 What are the expansive, big motions for? Is it mainly for show. I know when I have to play quietly it's much easier to use a large arm motion.
She is better than Liberace !
2:05
is it so hard to ask for a repeat? :(
Oh, yes I agree with you. But she plaied around 11 minutes was't it ? (but she isn't understanding this music(piece) well. It too first for fer age to Understand and express the music , but tecnics(playing the piano for her age14,, she has and well doing!!)
I love the playing, but can they please stop dressing her in the huge frilly princess dresses lol. It looks kinda silly to me at 14 or 15. She's a very serious, talented, and mature artist. I think she should look it.
I deeply agree ❗
is it me or does that low b seem too low? like almost a quarter-tone...
As long as Aimi thinks that playing the piano is mainly for show, she will not improve.
@utubuser10 Some one sent me the link. I watched and listened. I really liked the performance itself. But since I have been watching it - noticed the one thing I dont like.
Some inconsistencies that she needs to work on to bring her playing up to scratch.
balance between the left and right hands - the right drowns out the left at times and the L lacks real articulation
Being able to effectively and slowly decrescendo (not loud one note then soft the next) which is so important in this sonata
Softer hands - there's an element of bash here that reminds me of Lang Lang
Yes, she was only 14 and hopefully her teachers will work on this.
Can your- please - be more specific .....what do you mean by " real articulation " ? ; " softer hands " ???
Played well... But I am in a huge opposition to this kind of "movementship" on stage. I prefer the Richter approach to it: total darkness in the hall and the only light is on the score(if there is one). No movement or face expression - there is nothing to see=) Music is not on your face or in your movements=) Its in the sound=)
Compare this with Serena Wang on "Beethoven Waldstein 1st mvt (8 years old)". Same music. Serena show no emotion at all whatsoever, and only minimal body movement until the end. Aimi displays great maturity and control here, and I don't mind her body movements. But her recent face-making in the Chopin competition is too much for me. The video shooting here was terrible, cannot even show her face clearly.
Ok, but Serena Wang is 8 years old.
Well played but too fast. This piece should time out at around 11 minutes. To rush it into no more than 9 minutes isn't "playing the piece as written," it's just showing off...and not in a good way.
This is the speed it's supposed to be played. Check the sheet music.
No talent performance... Only first tempo. !
