not exactly the same, but I was pursuing Roblox development since I was a teenager, parents and family never took it seriously no matter what money I made. as soon as I got a full time salaried position, they see my online job as a "real" profession. now I work for myself once more and make 5x what that salary was, but people take me seriously now. had to go through the paperwork, I guess... it proves your success matters to more people than just you.

People only saw video games as a waste of time or a pass time, never as a way to do anything in life. But now-a-days we have highly competitive multiplayer games where people have honed their talents and skills for years to win money. So things have definitely changed

I do just fine really. I think if you don't have a job that you went to college for then they don't consider it a real job. So like they are a mechanic, engineer, teacher and hair dresser. They all went to school in order to get degrees and certifications in order to get those jobs and I was fortunate enough to know someone who was in charge and they gave me a chance and now I can use my experience to go even further up in this field without schooling.

Even though there are plenty cases of people that don't have that, yet do want it and make it their goal to become a better person or whatever they need to do to achieve said goal. It's all about perception. Also, in most western countries theres a social "net" that allows people that don't do anything to still survive. All be it in a small apartment with little food etc. But it's enough for the basic needs. So technically you could just live your life out like that.
