I'm under 40, grew up in Norway and still i grew up listening to and appreciated Tom Lehrer, and many of my friends did as well :) We do lack someone of his caliber to do political satire these days though, not for lack of material i might add :D

Tom is a musical genius and I am so proud to have known him so well for such a long time. He moved in to the house where my husband and I lived in Buckinghamshire to share our home and we had such fun listening to Tom play and sing his music. My husband, Michael, thought his music magical, and it is!
We had this LP when I was a kid, the cover fascinated me, and the music enchanted me. As I grew older and got all the satire, I used bits of his songs (don't solicit for your sister....) liberally. All my friends knew who he was, and loved his humor, we used to play the record at my house and roar with laughter. Lehrer is pure genius, the Cole Porter of biting satire. Thank you Tom Lehrer for spicing up my dull childhood. I am indebted to you and always try to emulate you in chat rooms and in everyday life as well.

Tom won’t let me tell you, Alexander. Let’s just say that it concerned what I felt the randy young Boy Scout in the last verse should be carrying in his shirt pocket if he was truly to be prepared, but Tom was quite right - it was actually too rude for either of us to sing!
I've always felt this way about the boy scouts... although I never said anything for fear that all the conservative soccer moms of the world would murder me in my sleep!!
Real life in the Boy Scouts of America in the 1960s was in fact a lot closer to this song-- SOMETIMES-- than you ever would have expected. ...Then sometime after the Vietnam war and the heyday of the counterculture, the Scouting movement was hijacked by the religious right, and they've been slowly finding their way back to normality ever since.
Helarki, I am a Boy Scout, and it makes Boy Scouts a lot less fun in some ways. It was the one place where I could just be with boys and do boy stuff, but now everything has to be inclusive, and the girls, well, they are girls, and act like such. There is a lot of drama in our troop now, and I just wish it could go back to the way it was before. I think that it would have been a lot better if the leaders of the BSA made the girls their own separate branch of scouting, like the Cub Scouts or the Sea Scouts. That way they could be included but not take the place for boys to be boys away from us.
Dale Howell was only 10 and wasn't allowed to listen to Lehrer. I was only 12 and wasn't allowed to associate with anyone to do with the Boy Scouts (to include Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Brownies); I'm forever grateful, but I could have all the Lehrer I wanted.
The recording takes me back to my university student days, when he was greatly appreciated. As I am now 82, those days were long ago. ....

I grew up on Lehrer’s songs.
This was strong stuff in 1960! I was only 10, and although my Dad liked Tom Lehrer, I wasn't allowed to listen to him.
