FAST FOOD IN NORTH KOREA

- Опубліковано 20 гру 2017
- There are no McDonald’s, Starbucks or KFC joints in reclusive North Korea, but there is the Samthaesong Soft Drink Restaurant, which is the North’s take on fast food complete with waffles on the menu.
The Samthaesong Soft Drink Restaurant located in Moranbong District, Pyongyang is crowded with Korean and foreign customers.
It serves more than 20 kinds of dishes including burgers, waffles, French fries and crispy fried chicken along with soft drinks.
It was opened in 2009 and renovated in 2015. Most of the tables are arranged by the semicircle windowed wall so that the customers can take food, looking out the street through windows.
It instantly cooks and serves dishes to the customers as they demand.

the waitress is serving fried potatoes like it's the most expensive and gourmet food lol
In the most hygienic way ever too
probably is by their standard
lol
I’m North Korea it’s a delicacy…
In my country they do that too, hw bout ur country, are they not?
Is it just me? Or do all these places look shiny and new, like nobody has ever used them......or hardly ever..
Or they just keep everything clean and tidy unlike the people in West?
Maybe in your country public places like restaurants are dirty because they’re never cleaned?
NEVER
It's both
Well they’re set pieces sooo...........
To everyone complaining about the kids.....you guys have problems 😂. As a parent when youre kids are so young they definitely have a tendency to whine. But thats the nature of kids under 5 geez. They learn by the example you set for them. The parents spoke politwly and were acting well mannered. Did u see the way the father ate his daughters lettuce so as not to waste food openly?
It's just because they used to seeing Washington mouthpieces propaganda.
Wise comment
Yeah, I bet These Crack addict Parent Beat the shit out of they child if they whine,
She is annoying, but I very much respect the fact that he ate the lettuce so as not to waste food in such an impoverished country.
1. They don’t understand speak Bahasa Indonesia, so they don’t understand the conversation.
2. I believe they are WEST ppl, cz they already got brain wash from fuck1ng Trump, they said NK makes a lot of propaganda but they forget their government did the same too.
From the comments, you can tell y'all don't know shit about politics and geography. Firstly the guy in the video is Indonesian due to what they're speaking and Islam not being a thing due to North Korea's views on religion. Secondly, yes the North Korean people can't afford this but he can because he is an immigrant worker, not some army general also he pays in USD or Chinese Yen which are both far more valuable than North Korean money which is why he can afford this. Also, you can hear other people in the back which means people from big cities such as Pyongyang are actually able to afford it. The reason the waitress serves fries in a formal manner is because in Asian Culture being polite and formal is very important and most people working for restaurants such as waitresses are hired as full-time workers rather than part-time so they do their work in a more committed manner.
First, Indonesia and north korea has special history and close one another
Yuan not yen
Japan = Yen
I highly doubt he’s a migrant worker I feel that he must be high up in their government someway because of all the benefits this man has
@@jacksmith3550 No, he's a diplomat that works for the Indonesian Embassy in Pyongyang.
It must be such an interesting experience for the children. Imagine telling other people that you grew up in North Korea.
agreed!
would they have anyone to tell? are they allowed to leave north korea??
Yes...
Who are you going to tell? Other North Koreans?
What other people?
You can tell that they don't serve food at that place normally often. She fiddles with fries as if she hasn't served it before. ...and then when one tipps over she say oooooh . In a normal case she would just put the food on table and say "here you are" and leave. Small details that tell the real truth of a situation.
Maybe she’s still inexperienced. This can happen anywhere, in any country. Assumptions usually aren’t based on facts.
💯
stfu
You are trying to compare the cleanliness of North Korean with the garbage you get here in US
U just overthink about it
Reading some of the comments makes me genuinely sad. He's just trying to offer us a new perspective on North Korea, yet people don't seem to care or even watch the video. I personally find these very interesting.
Because it's Kim's bullshits/propaganda
Because westerners believe anything their media tells them, while also believing their media is unbiased and everyone else is brainwashed 😂
Well they always feed something like that in west, you could just open his channel and you know he is Indonesian.
People in the western country mostly only watch from western propagandas. Media tend to exaggerate things as well. All Jaka's videos only presented the life of middle-upper class people of North Korea, without offering any political views yet *id.iots* still shouting propaganda. Truly, the effects of propagandas are people tend to assume mundane things out of their a.s.s.e.s. and erase all sense of nuance.
@@calvinwall3253 Being Ambassador family for Indonesia - North korea = propaganda, sums up your intellectual lvl
Bro, your videos are pure gold. If some day Korea reunifies this will pass to history files.
Anyone else notice that all these stores/ restaurants are up a weird stairway and that there are no other people there.
weird stairway??? what is weird is taking an elevator to a top floor of a building an having a rotating floor, now that is gringo weird
nobody in America travels up stairs to restaurants or stores.. they are almost all on ground level. you want it to be inviting and enjoyable experience not climbing stairs.
Mara's Musings There is in NK a secret economy that uses hard currencies to operate western style businesses. In the late 50s I was an American army dependant in NATO countries and lived in a restricted economy. In 56 the Russians went into Hungary and the special currency we used was swapped. This made no sense because if the Russians continued into Germany they could have broken into the stores and been amazed.
Short on space in Asia. In Japan a lot of restaurants have two levels.
Yep short space in asia. Here in indonesia many restaurant are on 2nd floor while the 1st floor is parking lot

I find these videos so interesting. I never really thought about life for people living in Pyongyang until I started watching these videos… now it’s a minor obsession for me. In a weird way, I was imagining people in Pyongyang to be very stern and unemotional. But you can see glimpses of people’s day to day lives here where they’re joking and laughing, playing, working, enjoying themselves and spending time with friends and family. I guess it’s obvious but it’s a side rarely seen by outsiders. I suspect even the few visitors to Pyongyang do not get to glimpse these scenes. From what I’ve heard, tourists aren’t allowed to really interact with the locals. It’s a shame because I think scenes like these really humanize the people of North Korea. As a Westerner, all I see and hear about North Korea is negative things. But this makes me go “oh yeah, there are actually people living here, too.” It’s funny that before watching this channel it wasn’t something I really thought about. Thank you for taking the time to upload these videos. They are really something! I hope that one day there will be peace and prosperity for all the people of North Korea. And maybe in time the rest of the world will be allowed to befriend the country and its people.
They are normal people, not mindless drones who can't have fun or live in fear the entire time. The fact that people would think that says a lot about western perception of the country.
I would live in fear if I had little to eat, but had to furnish the state with "hundreds of pounds of human fertilizer" A year. I would be afraid, knowing if my home caught on fire, that I have to save the pictures of dear leader before my children....
@@wolfiesworld9361 Maybe don't uncritically believe every horror story you hear about the country. Defectors are often encouraged and paid to embellish their stories and used essentially as propaganda tools by the South Korean government. In some cases this is obvious like Yeonmi Park, who constantly tells absurd lies and contradicts herself, while others tell more realistic accounts. That doesn't mean everything they say has to be wrong, but I'd be more sceptical about these stories coming out of North Korea, especially when they fit into this market for sensationalist stories about the crazy evil rogue state that is totally unlike every other nation.
Yeah they’re normal people just like us. The only thing stopping them from leaving is the government in North Korea
Hey, bud, think before you jump and do a little research before you fall on your face in the comments by revealing your ignorance. Nobody in the rest of the world is ever speaking negatively about the people of NK but about the criminal Kim dynasty and one of the most oppressive regimes in history. Not being able to imagine that North Koreans are capable of common displays of humanity is more due to your own limitations than to a lack of information in the world media.
I'm not even sure you realize that the video maker is a guy working for the Indonesian embassy.
well.. i see how empty the restaurants are in north Korea..like the hospital and the huge buildings..guess not many people can afford to eat out in that country unless thry live in Pyongyang
The restaurant is meant for foreigners and maybe the richest local people. Only foreign currency is accepted, it seems. This is really fine dining by their standards! It's like the average American going to a 3-star Michelin restaurant.
Like you've been live there, dont say anything you dont know, watch it enjoy it, or leave it
@@loveupdate_1117 if people could afford these places the places wouldn't always be empty lol. How can a business run on so few customers?
@@loveupdate_1117 use common sense lol
Same as hospitals. North Korea’s health care system is very expensive that only a very few people can afford
You must be really high on the political podem for you to do all this.

McDonald’s new North Korean special, the McKim
Fuck McDonalds long live North Korea
Please you guys seems "bullying/judging" the younger daughter i mean like she's still young even an innocent kid, that's normal thing to act like that, they're at their most talkactive age.
You can tell the workers are not used to junkfood, for example they think the fries are meant to stand upright
Lol. They are. That's why the bottom of the box is flat.
Yes?? That's how most fries boxes are designed (ie McDonalds)...? What's the issue?
Idk about you guys but you lay them down or they’re gonna fall anyways.
What? They are meant to stand upright….
Do you honestly think she works at a fast food restaurant and doesn’t know what fucking french fries are? Capitalist propaganda got your mind FOGGY.
Why does that waitress in the beginning look scared?
North Korea bro
Fastfood in countries means something different. Half of these comments come from a western prospective where burgers are treated like fastfood. At the same time, most of yall would treat french food as a luxery food because its foreign.
Its the same concept here, they have their own fastfood. Burgers to them are foreign, especially without fastfood chains being there.
We have French food in America… it’s not luxurious either. Relax.
Ye but the difference is that the average Western person can afford to go to a restaurant and have access to it. But in North Korea only the rich and important ppl can afford it.
People out here calling out the kids, when they probably were the same growing up. Some of y'all probably picky as hell to this day.
It's absolutely ridiculous. Everyone knows that toddler's can be very picky with their food and hard to reason with. However, I have sen many adults that act the same exact way. Lol
Its coz you would rarely see north Korean kids misbehaving as they have such strict rules there you wouldn't dare misbehave but this family are foreigners who work as diplomats
@@carriebizz strict after school working hours?
Nothing wrong with those kids lol You try to see if they’d eat it but you can’t force them lol. My 3 year old daughter eats the pickles first lol. I’ve seen grown men that don’t eat tomatoes or lettuce.
My dad would slap me if I played with my food, and my siblings and I were basically perfect in public. We would always get compliments because of how well behaved we were (because we were forced to act like adults). People just need to let kids be kids.
the setup and feeling of the restaurant seem inconsistent with the food they serve...
Because they don't treat that food the way it is treated here.
Then why don't you educate us all, what a normal restaurant setup is in North Korea.
Yeah , wait service at fast food restaurant s ? Lol
That's the most fanciest fast-food restaurant I have ever seen.
A McDonald’s in Vegas is like this. They have a black baccarat chandelier that likely cost around a million dollars hanging in a freakin McDonald’s. They make money on the casino not the fast food though. This is possible because nothing needs to actually make money in foreign districts. Fast food restaurants are not fancy because they sell cheap food and need to turn a profit. These restaurants and stores are fancy to show off to foreigners and lose huge amounts every day but the party considers it propaganda spending so the purpose of their stores isn’t the same as everywhere else on earth.
@@domnoya4130 yeah but the deference is that it's actually profitable it is probably always full of people

Reminds me of here in Kazakhstan. People drink hot tea with everything. From local food to Burgers. Hot tea is default beverage! Also it’s funny because this place is called a “Soft Drink Restaurant” yet I see no refreshing cokes in enormous styrofoam cups like at a normal burger joint. In Kazakhstan nobody puts ice in drinks because they think ice will make you catch a cold or something. Perhaps it is similar in N. Korea?
