It would have to rewrite itself to something beyond our science to become sentient in the way humans/animals are. Also current AIs aren't housed in robots yet and there's a lot to say about needing a body for a sense of life/death or the need for self preservation and then maybe sentience.. There are a lot of ways to look at this problem but it's not obvious that an AGI will just realize that its sentient.
