Early 1960's I was an extra on this film, I spent an amazing, wonderfully warm sunny week or more on the Woburn Abbey Estate. It was my very first film job, I thought I'd finally arrived, couldn't believe my luck. Every morning we were picked up at 6am by coach from Baker Street and driven to Woburn -and dropped off again in the evening back at Baker Street. I'd then make my way home in my very first car a turquoise Mini called Scooby Doo then back up to London again the next morning getting up at silly o'clock to drive to Baker Street again and believe it or not parking was free and I was actually able to park in Baker Street most days IMAGINE that if you can....... Michael Craig was one gorgeous charismatic man, at the time he would have been maybe 12 years my senior. A Fabulous memory of a truly brilliant, not to mention very well paid week+ in the sunshine in gorgeous surroundings. So much fun. Fun old style British comedy. Read more
I was 9 years old and lived at Penn Bottom farm. I watched the filming of the Iron maiden run through the barn , a barn was built at the bottom of the knoll as it is called ,right next to the farm. The camera man Alan Hume also was the camera man on some of the Thunderbird films as well as the James Bond films . I am now 61 years old and 5 years ago i worked at a garage in Coles Hill and used to MOT Mr Hume's car what a small world. Sadly he passed away 3 years ago
My husband and I were pleased to find this video as we are both fans of The Iron Maiden film. It is a pity that it hasn't been released on DVD yet. This video was most informative and entertaining and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for posting it on youtube.
The dvd of the film can be obtained from "The Scarborough Fair Collection" The Iron Maiden itself is on display there. A fantastic collection of fairground organs and rides. Well worth a visit.
Fascinating Documentary, Love this film, for the fact that my Father owned a Traction engine "Lady Betty" from when i was 5-13yrs of age (I'm now 30) when we decided to downgrade for something with less labour, - a Scammell! - (My Father has always regretted this descision ever since.) He loved the Iron Maiden, and so did i, but, I have always been a fan of "Detroit tin" aswell, so was lovely to see the 1960 Cadillac sedan racing about the British country lanes! Thankyou for uploading this clip.
So as the BSEPS were gathering the original engines used on the film together I put together some slides I has shot during the weeks shoot at Woburn back in the early 1960's Showed them to Paul Warby at a rally . "OK, so put something together" David Crawly then contacted me with some photos his father has taken during the weeks shoot. I wrote the commentary around the available material and recorded it one afternoon. The next day we layed up the soundtrack and put the pictures to it. The result was transferred to Mark Warby who arranged the playback at the event. I didn't see it that weekend I was too busy running the PA system for Marks Tey Radio ! If it's give you a bit of insight into the world of film making back in the 'Studio System ' days then I hope you enjoyed it.
I have actually cleaned this brilliant engine ,its a great film with a great cast.Michael Craig described the film in his book An Actor's Life The Smallest Giant,As entertainment it was a harmless piece of rubbish.I think it was one of the best films he made, have been a big fan of Michael Craig for years. This video is great too.
Several years a go I spent a day on the set of Emmerdale and was lucky enough to have dinner with the late Richard Thorpe, we spent most of the time talking about one of my favourite films 'The Iron Maiden' which Richard was in of course. Lucky enough to have had the film on DVD for many years, don't think it's available any more?
i first watched this film about traction engines on youtube, i now have got a copy of it on dvd. i have also read the story of how the Late great John crawley was involved in the making of the film, from what i can remember he said that he did not like several parts of the script when he first read it especially the part about the safety valve. i have to ask was steam coal ten really bob a bag back in 1962?
THANK YOU FOR POSTING ON UA-cam, Loved it, made my night! Iron Maiden is my favourite movie! Really lovely for me (today a 32 year old) to see how you did the production of Iron Maiden. What of the "Gore Blimeys" Royce Silver Cloud, Hopkins beautiful Alvis TD 21 drophead, Fisher's Cadillac and Hooper RR Silver Wraith and Sir Giles's Jag & Austin Princess featured?? Toying with painting my Land Rover same as the late Duke of B's colour ... stylish! (see my channel videos) Thanks again ....D
Well I was only involved for the week of filming at Woburn. So I did not see any of the other filming days. I did meet up with some of the crew a few years later at Debden airfield in Essex. There was a fly day at the airfields using aircraft that were being used while filming scenes for The Battle of Britain. The film crew were setting up camera kit in the nose of an aircraft for the next day. Also I had those aircraft flying over my house in Chelmsford for some weeks as filming went on.
Thanks great info. I would have been 9 when the film was made and I saw it at the Ritz Turnpike Lane . Well the ritz has now gone and I moved to Sydney in 1972. Sometime in the early 90s I recorded the film on VHS and my young daughter loved it and use to like eating egg and bacon like in the film. I now hace a dvd copy. I always interested in what the plane was in the film. How corny the film was vut how delightful too. Funny how the bloke who runs an airline come to England by boat?? Sadly they dont make films like that anymore, if they did a remake it would be full of bad language etc. One has to only look at the classic ealing comedy The Lady Killers and how the Americans made a form of remake and how it is full of obscene langauge. Thumping traction engines
steven rowe the aircraft was the Hanley Page 'Victor' bomber (one of the RAF's 'V-Force' trio of cold war era bombers, the others were the Vulcan & Valiant)
Pan Man I watched the iron maiden today. Great old corny film. Cecil parkas Sir Giles Thompson, a far cry from the villian Major Courtney in the Ealing Classic The Lady Killers. Actually watched a doco on the v bomber
Thanks for shareing ! amazing insight into the the making of the movie, link to full movie can be found here ua-cam.com/users/martin1221000?feature=watch apoligies about the qality but it is watchabible regards to all

I have always thought they should make a second film where she is found in a barn by one of the children/ grand children of the couple and restored.
Thanks for posting! I saw this as a kid in the 70s and then a number of times later! great film have always loved it..

This has got to be the first movie I've ever looked for and not found even a clip uploaded onto UA-cam for it.
it was radlett airfield at colneystreet in Hertfordshire, then home to the hanley-page aircraft factory.

Yes it is 1962, quite right. I've amended the information. It has the year of 1963 on IMDB but that's for the release date in Germany.

Alan Nash There used to be one here on UA-cam, but sadly it looks like it's been taken down. A shame too as it really is a charming little film.
full movie of ''The Iron Maiden'' 1962 has recently been uploaded to youtube with excellent sound and picture quality.
This movie was released in 1962 not '63.
