    The cheap gladius, with the engraved (or more likely casted) handle & pommel and the engraved blade... it really doesn't look like a weapon. More like "fancy for the sake of being fancy". By far I prefer the more simple and brutal look of the accurate one.

      Catch_Me_If_You_Can depends if you want an officer's gladius (he can afford a fancy one with gold and jewels and whatnot) or a soldier's gladius (for who it's nothing but a tool, he wants it to do the job so KISS).

    When I went to Rome in 2014, there were a lot of merchants in the city centre selling souvenir gladii at around 80 euros, and they were all claiming to be made in Italy. Some of them looked like the cheap replica you are showing, some of them looked like the real thing (although at that time, I did not know much about swords). Still, I got the idea that they were made of stainless still, since every one was touching them. I really wanted to buy one, but it wouldn't fit in my damn suitcase... It would have been a nice reminder of my trip, but also a good exercise instrument (I have cerebral palsy and I should really exercise more, but I usually find it so boring). Anyway, thanks for the video and keep up the good work!

    To elaborate more on the saying, "those who spend more, spend less ultimately". It's so true. Sometimes, I think, "why not buy a cheap version of what I want and then buy the more expensive one later?", specifically when I was looking into buying a sleeping bag. Then, I realized, I could just save myself from spending more in the future and just buy the expensive version now. Not only do I save a little bit of money, but also time. I get to enjoy the more expensive item for longer. Man, it's nice to have a lightweight sleeping bag for camping :).

    I recently picked up from United Cutlery, the Combat Commander Gladiators sword, and yes that is what it is called. It is however after some research based on the Mainz pattern. It is thin but has a very nice edge, I've cleared some brush with it, and the edge held up nicely. Now it does have some what of a short blade, 16 and 5/8 inches long. But it feels very good in the hand. I actually bought it for home defense, but when I go walking in real woods, it will be with me. As an edged weapon, I like it better then my big Bowie knife.

Btw, I'm proud to see an Italian guy like myself with similar interests and the potential to be the next Lindybeige or something like that (Non ho idea del perché io stia scrivendo in inglese... but well, whatever).
    I'm quite interested in beginning a personal collection myself but I have a few questions perhaps you'll have the time to answer: have you encountered any legal issues while collecting melee weapons in Italy? ThatGuyBen99 I suppose they didn't know better, (which is quite shameful), or they had a few Romaphiles who thought that this ornate handle configuration was 'prettier' than the more realistic simple wood and/or bone. But if you look at 90% if not all of the Roman troops equipped with the gladius, pause it and examine the handle, it's the same overly-ornate look as this wall-hanger here. So it's quite inaccurate, they're all in bronze too. Would be fairly expensive.

    I know that this video is old, but one other difference I can spot between the cheap gladius and the historically accurate one is that the cheap one has a very thin bevelling and a wide spin (almost as if they planned to add a fuller into the blade) where as the historically accurate one has a wider bevelled edge and a spin that's so thin it looks like a line running from the tip of the blade all the way down to the crossguard.

  • @Verdunveteran
    @Verdunveteran 9 років тому +2

    Interesting video as allways! However I would consider both of these Gladii cheap low quality replicas. The wall hanger is probably a Denix-replica and it's common knowledge that their work is crap, even dangerous for anything but hanging on the wall.Your other one looks like a Depeeka Mainz Gladius. Far better than the Denix one yes, but kind of a budget version of low end historical replicas when it comes to swords. Depeekas swords are usually overweight, klunky things with kind of weakish tangs that might work to wear to a costume, maybe even some reenacting. If you want a good, functional sword, Gladius or other, that you can actually trust to use, either blunt ones for reenactment or Sharp ones for cutting/stabbing drills, you need to spend atleast 200 Euros to get the minimum of a good quality, historically accurate replica. if you want a really good quality replica, sharp or blunt, that is historically accurat and functional you should aim for the 500 Euros or more Swords. Personally for a really good and accurate Gladius I would get a sharp Albion one at around 700 Euros plus around 400 Euros for a high quality scabbard from Todds Scabbards or a custom one from Stefan Roth. For a blunt reenactment Gladius, fit for fighting, I would consider something cheaper but not as cheap as Depeekas. Maybe a custom Gladius from Armour Class, BKS or Paul Binn. When it comes to swords that are meant to be used as more than wallhangers it's allways better to spend atleast 200 Euros or more to get a sword that is safe to use nad wont break on you and risk hurting yourself or others. Those cheap ones like the Depeeka-ones or worse usually end up causing you more problems than they are worth.Worth to remember is that a blunted sword will always be heavier and never perform the exact same way as their sharp historical counterparts. If you really know what it's like to swing a historical sword you should always do solo drills and cutting tests with sharp swords and leave the blunt ones for sparring or reenactment fighting.

      D4rkG4ming When the US uses it, it does not mean it is logical. US does a lot of stupid things.... look at the voting system during election. Its joke. Same as pounds. Praise the metric system (btw worse is Farenheit unit for temperature....its like a drunk scale :-D )

      +Jan Hurych Lol what are you even talking about. I live in the Netherlands and i know what pounds are, i also know what yards and inches are. If you don't know it then use a converter instead of writing useless comments. Want to know what's not logical, people who think they own the world and write generic comments.

      +Jan Hurych Well pounds is a measurement of actual weight while grams is in reality, mass. So if you want something's _weight_, pounds are more appropriate.

    I find it interesting to note that you used the cheap gladius when making the video in spoken latin a few weeks back. Did you not have the Mainz type back then or did you deliberately choose it because it looks like an oversized Pompeii type?

    Stainless Steel! I could get a high carbon steel 50cm blade for 12 euros in the US ( 20in and 12 bucks ).
    Of course the tempering is not great and there is a chipping factor.

    • @alnotbiggaytho7124
      @alnotbiggaytho7124 8 років тому +2

      no bc heavy sword training makes you get used to heavy swords but if you have a different sword weight then you are not used to that weapon on the battlefielf

    I can imagine a situation where a large force is recruited in a fairly short space of time (as during a civil war) where the quality of manufacture would not be at the same level as would be in peace time. Also, as Romans tended to often supply themselves locally there must be occasions when local weaponry would be used or adapted. Auxiliaries and Foederati often used weapons of native origin and certain items contributed to the evolution of Roman Legionary equipment over the centuries. I think that, in the end, it's always good to do your homework and recognise that which is obviously modern tack

    I got myself a gladius and it has a dark blade, I think because of the high carbon content. I was very disappointed tbh, it doesn't look like its historical..or is it?? Did the swords back then also had a dark carbon blade? Btw I'm new to swords I have not much knowledge about it

    In Germany we have a similar saying: "Who buys cheap, buys twice."
    But yeah, the cheaper replica clearly has put more effort put into the artistic design while the more expensive one shows its dedication to manufacturing quality and historical accuracy.
    If I would be a swordsmith i could imagine saving on the decoration and going full into the actual usability.
    A sword has to be sharp and sturdy, not look good.
