"Brothers and sisters, I am grateful to be with you in this opening session of the 2017 BYU Campus Education Week. This year’s theme comes from Doctrine and Covenants 50:24, with special emphasis on these words: “And he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light.”
I am going to take a different approach to this theme than might be expected by exposing and illustrating some very cunning and effective ways that the “wicked one” prevents people from progressing and receiving more light (D&C 93:39).
Many gospel principles come in pairs, meaning one is incomplete without the other. I want to refer to three of these doctrinal pairs today:
-Agency and responsibility
-Mercy and justice
-Faith and works
When Satan is successful in dividing doctrinal pairs, he begins to wreak havoc upon mankind. It is one of his most cunning strategies to keep people from growing in the light.
You already know that faith without works really isn’t faith (see James 2:17). My primary focus will be on the other two doctrinal pairs: first, to illustrate how avoiding responsibility affects agency; and second, how “denying justice,” as it is referred to in the Book of Mormon (see Alma 42:30), affects mercy.
The Book of Mormon teaches us that we are agents to “act . . . and not to be acted upon” (2 Nephi 2:26)-or to be “free to act for [our]selves” (2 Nephi 10:23). This freedom of choice was not a gift of partial agency but of complete and total 100 percent agency. It was absolute in the sense that the One Perfect Parent never forces His children. He shows us the way and may even command us, but, “nevertheless, thou mayest choose for thyself, for it is given unto thee” (Moses 3:17).
Assuming responsibility and being accountable for our choices are agency’s complementary principles (see D&C 101:78). Responsibility is to recognize ourselves as being the cause for the effects or results of our choices-good or bad. On the negative side, it is to always own up to the consequences of poor choices...
Being 100 percent responsible is accepting yourself as the person in control of your life. If others are at fault and need to change before further progress is made, then you are at their mercy and they are in control over the positive outcomes or desired results in your life. Agency and responsibility are inseparably connected. You cannot avoid responsibility without also diminishing agency. Mercy and justice are also inseparable. You cannot deny the Lord’s justice without also impeding His mercy." - Lynn Robbins

Same here. I’m on the 3rd time
I been less active for the 3 years since my mission (served a great mission but fell off when I came home) depression warped my sense of reality and satan got a hold of me for a while. Now I'm making my way back, I set up a meeting with bishop this week, being obedient to the commandments, been clean from drugs for the last 2 months, but my goodness, the natural man is so strong! I get so overwhelmed and very bad anxiety but I know I cant be sad about it, this pain from sin I feel is the consequence of forgetting Him. I felt close to the edge and was about to take my own life but Im not going down without a "wrestle".
I own this pain, I own the loved ones I lost on the way, I own the bad reputation I've gained. I want this so bad and no matter what my friends, family and mission peers may say about me. I will not give up until I'm reunited with God in that Holy Temple again!! Pray for me brothers and sisters. If your struggling let me know and we'll do this together. God bless you all and dont be deceived by the devil. Theres a reason why he's called "cunning".
Hope you're doing well brother, it can be very difficult, but rely on Christ and you can do this.
I hope you seek the help you need to continue on the path of repentance which our prophet says we have need of doing daily, Hang in there.

I will pray for you! Don't give up. I used to be addicted to something's that I never thought I could get off of. I testify to you of the power of the atonement of Jesus Christ. He can change your heart and heal you as you turn to him and pray. He is more powerful then Satan. Don't worry about what other people think you are worth or you are capable of. Remember who Jesus Christ and God KNOW who you are and what your capable of. Don't give up, don't stop trying! Accepting responsibility for where you are is important, and so is accepting and remembering in who you have trusted! Jesus Christ. I pray you will choose to turn to the Lord for help in overcoming your challenges. Give up all your son's to know him and I promise you your life can hold much Joy! ❤️ Take care brother!
Elder Robbins is arguably my favorite speaker, and I selfishly want him called as an Apostle so he can speak every General Conference 🙏🏾
I agree, his talks have probably been more impactful to me than any other general authority outside of the top 15. I would love for him to be called as an apostle so we could hear his wisdom all the time! 😇‼️

Brilliant!!!! Imagine if our public leaders (servants) took 100% responsibility. So much brokenness in society would be mitigated.
I feel like I’m in kindergarten again after hearing this amazing talk! The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my very favorite movies and he used the story absolutely perfect. It gave me a whole new perspective on everything! This talk was 99% perfect, I kept hoping that at the end of his talk he would mention that the Count and his family let all their hard feelings go and decided to follow Christ.

Yeah him not finishing the story makes it sound like the rest of his life was miserable.
I don’t see it that way. He left us the opportunity (intentionally, I believe) to take responsibility for ourselves and our desire for a full understanding and go to read and study for ourselves. To read more deeply, research more fully, and ponder more thoroughly the story of the Count, the stories of Laman, Lemuel, Nephi, Korihor, Nahor, and the gospel plan of our Redeemer, “to receive more light”. This is our call, and we are so blessed through this and the referenced talks and resources. I am excited about these opportunities for me and for y’all too. Let’s stand together as “champions” and brothers and sisters, and go get that “more light” that he promised us in the opening.

I love it, that is the way we grow, taking responsability,and applying the scriptures in daily life not just learning it and let it in our brain like just knowledge .
This talk is truly beneficial in identifying the adversary’s subtle influences. Perhaps another thing to think about is how we inadvertently practice depending on other people through perpetually trying to win their affection or even trying to gain supposed “needed” recognition to bolster our own self esteem. When we realize, that before birth, we lived with the greatest love from heavenly parents it seems only natural we crave the same here on earth. If we remember the Savior seeks to succor us with outstretched arms; little by little we come to know of His great power to heal us from the enticements of worldly pursuits. If ever we taste, in the flesh, this great love spoken of by Lehi in his vision of the tree of life, we’ll come to not only savor it but diligently seek it above all other pursuits.

I am ashamed that i have been doing nearly everything on that list. I am glad that i came across this excellent talk by Elder Robbins. I need to do a lot of repenting.
Great talk that makes me think more profoundly.
One thing I would state differently: 12:41 "...why do so many [OF US] frequently turn to it." We ALL use these 'tools of escape'. No one is immune, and THAT is taking responsibility.
Now, we should take responsibility for what we can do to change our experience. Our failures are ours, and so are our successes! Just think how many of us (me included!) dismiss their actions that bring happiness as well as cause unhappiness. Both must be true if we are 100% responsible. If using "the list' robs our free agency and gives it to Satan (for failures AND successes), when we accept our involvement, we have gratitude to God's, and retain our agency.
Also, I'm not sure that Anger is a 'negative' emotion. It IS an emotion, and when we use it to excuse negative behaviors, it has a negative impact, but it is not always negative in and of itself (even Christ was angry at times).
I have had so many problems with people saying don't get angry being angry is wrong. It just seems like you're not allowed to be angry or sad or have any kind of emotion. If that makes sense
Most people lose control when angry. Perhaps there are some that can be in perfect control in such a situation. I haven't met them. Christ in his perfect state could avoid such an outcome. So in theory I can agree with you. In practice, not so much.
This should be a TED talk, it deserves that kind of recognition.

25:00 remarkable story, but what happens when just one of the spouses does this every time? or if the other just receive the apology and put him/her in the victims' role? A person could do these things one or a hundred times maybe, but sooner or later a "material's fatigue" with affect the weakest link of the relation...
How do you defend yourself from harm from people who have wicked intentions?
Yeah, I think you have to be careful here. There is a difference between taking responsibility for your actions, and thinking you're responsible for others actions. Especially those that impact you. Elder Holland once advised that you don't spend one second in a relationship with someone who belittles or demeans your self worth.
