Apparently both sides are wrong. Protein contains tryptophan which raises serotonin slightly, and carbohydrates raise insulin which raises tryptophan and serotonin. The only food that doesn't increase serotonin is fruits that are really high in fructose, because there's no protein and therefore no tryptophan in fruits, and fructose doesn't require insulin to get used like glucose because it gets stored in the liver. So fruitarian diet would block serotonin the most. And some protein sources that are low in tryptophan would also keep serotonin low, like gelatin and collagen
Good question. Here's a paper that looks useful: www.researchgate.net/publication/14304831_Preexercise_meal_composition_alters_plasma_large_neutral_amino_acid_responses_during_exercise_and_recovery Looks like the Trp/LNAA ratio goes up a tiny bit during exercise and then tanks, a result of LNAAs tanking the whole time linearly, and the Trp concentration boosting a tiny bit with a half hour of exercise but tanking after longer. They look at the influence of different meals. I imagine that a Trp supplement beforehand could have leveraged the tanking of LNAAs as you suggest to increase the Trp/LNAA ratio robustly.
If I am an early riser 2-3am (not by choice it just seems to happen) I am thinking of taking an L-tryptophan supplement before bed. Thoughts? Edit- I follow a keto diet
You do not make melatonin from light. Nor do you make it in response to light. You make it in response to darkness. Your brain perceives darkness relative to morning light, so getting morning light helps your brain to perceive darkness more robustly at night. However, you don't make it "from" darkness or light. You make it from tryptophan. You cannot make it from anything else other than tryptophan. So morning light and evening darkness do absolutely nothing if there isn't enough tryptophan in your brain.

There's no specific carb amount that is or was "paleo." If you find that you *need* more carbs to recover, and then that you *need* more carbs later to sleep, and that this exceeds the total you choose to allow yourself, then you should either choose to have poor sleep or poor recovery, or choose to eat more carbs.
