To be CLEAR: Sanderson announced last week that the premium limited editions with the foil and covers will be reprinted, stocked indefinitely and available to purchase as a standalone book. Saw some confusion where people thought he was only selling the “extras”. They are reprinting the nice ones :)

No shadiness at all. This is the most transparent business man alive. Not perfect, obviously, but definitely not shady. He's even made sure that getting the books late is more expensive than for those who got them through the kickstarter. Any upset fan is really upset at themselves, not Sanderson. He's been honest and upfront. There have been changes due to the massive success, but what would these upset people have him do? Make sure that only those who backed the kickstarter reap it's benefits and discontinue the stories afterwards?
If there's one thing I've learned over and over and over....it's that even readers can't seem to read. No kickstarter promises were broken. They didn't promise any exclusivity although they mentioned that it was POSSIBLE, because it was. They didn't know WHAT they were going to do, they'd barely learned the books even existed! They didn't know whether or not the books were going to be on Audible, whether or not English and foreign publishers would want to pick them up, if they did they didn't know when they would be ready to release them. They didn't know if they could offer any of the swag outside of the backers of the YoS. All of this was plenty clear when the kickstarter was live, but people can't read. Or they're just angry they can't now resell their copies at a premium on eBay. There's also that.
I agree that the editions of the kickstarter were promised to be exclusive, but obviously the books would be released in other ways aftetwards. I only bought the kickstarter for the edition not the story. And in thr long run I wouldn't mind for the special editions to not be exclusive to this kickstarter, but that is how they were explained at the beginning and as an international backer, to know now that I could have just waited until they solve their international high shipping rates is a tiny bit disappointing. But I'll have to wait to see how the year ends before deciding if it was worth it or not. But for the stories, of course they would be published somehow else, you don't build a huge universe and make some parts time exclusive, that would harm your overall story 😅
They definitely never explicitly said that the special editions would never be offered later. Just that they couldn't promise they would be, which is not a promise they could make at the time. If DS suggested they *would* be available later, and then couldn't deliver they'd be yelled at for THAT. Simply bad reading and unfair expectations.
@@jharkey3 I just rewatched thr video and yes, he says "the hardcovers might not be available later" but you can see he wants them to be. What he says is exclusive is all the rest of boxes. I also think they could have been way more clear about that as everybody was just in panick mode during last march and I see quite normal that not all the information got across clearly.
I can see that being really frustrating. I was in a really hard place financially when the kickstarter was happening and only managed to purchase digital copies on the kick backer. Needless to say though, glad they aren't gatekeeping the premium version and also preventing a massive wave of scalpers swooping in and preying on fans who just want to read the book. As a large Lego fan we see this sort of thing way too often, glad Sanderson is avoiding the mistake. I can see though where this would make some backers unhappy. Honestly though in this situation, someone will always find something to be salty about. A lot of this boils down to the issue of the kickstarter being way more popular than they could've dreamed of. I bet if it hadn't turned out that way we would never see these premium editions again, or for several years. But Sanderson was kind of a victim of his own success. At least the backers got a discount on the books. I'll have to fork over the full price.

I get it. They did make it seem like these *editions* of the books were exclusive and like the "normal" editions wouldn't be coming out for a while. I'm happy they're all releasing, but I get where she's coming from. I don't think they misled us, but I can see how it feels that way.
I think the problem is that the way the kickstarter was set up, where they where making decisions and giving more information along the road, it was completely inevitable and imo very reasonable that some people are going to feel a bit scammed. The information that we got even at the end of the month was not the same as when many people pledged during the launch. Especially international backers who where paying significantly higher prices. Most of those got a pretty shitty deal to begin with and are not really getting anything out of other than a bookmark. Which is completely logical to be frustrated about. It also doesn’t help that the shipping itself was delayed (tho not their fault), so the translated editions are coming out way before the actual book boxes, and that things like the digital rewards weren’t that impressive. It just kind of creates a bad atmosphere all around I don’t think dragonsteel has done anything wrong. Reminds me of the first couple of days with the brotherwise kickstarter where they hadn’t seemed to realize people might want to actually pick which set they buy leading to massive confusion throughout the entire campaign. Edit: tldr, I think it's perfectly logical people are upset and really dislike the framing that they are petty and gatekeeping or should have known better. The information at the time framed it at uncertain, and a lot of people bought for that reason. It's pure marketing and as much respect and trust as I have for dragonsteel (they are far better than most) they are still a company
For example, I do not believe for a second that they where not 100% sure these books where going to go way above their funding goal. Probably not 40 million nr 1. But the “what if they had done poorly” scenario is simply not relevant because it was never going to happen in the first place. And if they truly did not see that coming and that they would have the resources to do further printing, then I am questioning them as a company. Because considering how much care they put into communication and how nice they have been to deal with during the entire process/in general, it feels like a weird blindspot to have
Well, they did pay us international backers the taxes, which would have made the deal even worse, so it's something 😅 but yeah, it depends a lot of people liking the items in the boxes to make it worth it because only for the books is for sure not a good deal for international people if they will be reprinted (as thr price of the book might be higher but they are working on a european retailer to make the shipping way lower)
@@laiaal.3324 oh yeah the taxes is amazing, as I said I do think they care a lot about their backers. They could just have been clearer from the begging. I don't see this as shady. I think it's the nature of Kickstarter, at that point they didn't know the level of demand there would be and probably hadn't decided what formats they would publish the books in after the Kickstarter. That said, I don't really like this way of selling as a fan and I can definitely see why some fans will now think they would have been better off picking and choosing. Knowing what we know now, for all but the biggest fans with pretty loose budget constraints waiting makes more sense. I'm personally inclined to read the ebooks and only order the special editions if I really love the books. I didn't back the Kickstarter as with the shipping to the UK it just felt like too much for me to spend, even though I really really wanted them. Now that we know that they are available I'm relieved that I didn't. Again, I don't think they have done anything wrong here. But, I do think they could serve the fans better in future by deciding ahead of time whether or not the same editions will be available via Dragonsteel. This would probably result in a less successful kickstarter because you take the fear off missing out element away, but would likely result in a happier fanbase and fewer people overstretching financially. From what I know of Sanderson I think he would value this.
Those books should absolutely be available to everyone. Though I was a bit miffed to find out that the ebook would bei available for everyone just 9 days after backers got it. 9 days of exclusivity is a bit short imo.
i think a large portion of this decision was the amount of money they generated from the kickstarter, without that they would not have had the extra capital to brainstorm making more copies,. just my opinion and 2 cents
For anyone who thinks otherwise, Sanderson specifically stated in his Time to Come Clean video that would absolutely be making the books available after the kickstarter for those that couldn’t participate, but due to what was involved in the fancy versions they weren’t sure if they would be doing more of those. That time stamp is 13:50 for those that want the citation, and it’s totally reasonable to assume that with the biggest kickstarter ever they would then have the resources to make more. The only lie out there is the manufacturers outrage.
I spent just as much money on the shipping as I did on the books themselves with the kick starter. I couldn't back the year of sanderson because it would cost me around 1000 quid. These books were marketed as limited edition, great quality and exclusive for this kick starter. A line at the bottom of the information section which opens the possibility of more in future doesn't justify it. Again, marketed as an exclusive, one time edition. I payed double for their prices because they were exclusive. It's moderately disapointing that they have made them available again, considering marketing and prices. Although this doesn't change my opinion about sanderson and his company. And a question, are the "exclusive" version of the books permanent or only being sold as extras?
Also just to add, she wasn't gate keeping the books. Just the exclusive versions. And this kickstarter was marketed as exclusive, therefor wouldn't carry on and produce more. The story will be told like any other book, with paper or hard backs. These books are only for collecting etc.
I’m sorry you this situation was a bummer for you. It really sucks when what you get isn’t what you expected. That said, I misspoke in the video calling them limited or exclusive editions. As far as I can tell they were only ever called premium editions. The line that said they might not be printed again was bolded. And I think if the Kickstarter didn’t do well, they probably wouldn’t have made them again. Also people backing the Kickstarter for nearly a 20% discount compared to what other fans will be paying. (Not including shipping here).
Either way should have been more apparent, being such an crucial and important detail that would have swayed purchases, including mine. And I thought they were just selling extras? The fact they are selling them out right is incredibly disappointing. I thought I was purchasing something exclusive to the kick starter 🙄
I always thought the "we exclusivity" was early access and eventually the books would be available like any other release after a year. But I get why people that bought the most expensive editions are pissed.
I think it is a little ridiculous to expect these projects would never be reprinted. The man has a lot of fans so they would find a way to read them no mtter what. Him not gigving people an opportunity to buy then would just be him losing out on money. I do think that maybe he could have jept the premium editions exclusive however
I think it should be noted that kickstarter wasn't ever used to "kickstart" the leatherbounds. The way of kings leatherbound is the 6th leatherbound they did, but only the first one they did on kickstarter. They only did it through kickstsrter as they wanted to do some swag with it and they also anticipated a large interest in it. Kickstarter was the best way for them to handle a larger audience and handle swag items. Their current plan is to only do kickstarter for stormlight leatherbounds amd to provide additional swag with them. That out of the way Dragonsteel hasn't come out yet on if books or swag in boxes will be abaliable post kickstarter print runs. Right now they are just selling the extras they printed. Which is exactly what they said they would do from the start. So I feel it's too early to be getting upset about them selling the extras. They never guaranteed availability of these, so those who didn't back ran the risk of them not being avaliable after. Additionally, looking at the prices, what people are paying right now for the book on the dragonsteel website is more than they would have paid backing kickstarter. So by backing you do at the very least right now got a better deal per book/per box.
Actually they did confirm last week that they will be stocking them “indefinitely” and they will be available at stores. Not just other versions… the premium editions are being reprinted and will be a regularly stocked item with dragonsteel
I stand corrected. Though between instagram and UA-cam I hadn't seen an official announcement. But doing some digging I found them stating in a comment that they would restock. However their listed price is more than the kickstsrter price. Additionally I would imagine the kickstsrter filled additions will he first printing and and if people who wanted only one book, if they kept the other books in New condition, probably could easily sell it later as there are collectors that would want a first printing
I think the monthly boxes have been underwhelming. The items are not what we were expecting as far as value and quality. I wouldn’t have backed the whole project if I had known books and box items would be available outside the kickstarted complete package. - It was not indicated that the box items or books would be available outside of the kickstarter, so it feels like we were played to think we were getting something that we could not get otherwise. There’s no exclusivity and that’s kind of what fans were paying for. It’s been disappointing.
Aren't the versions with the premium covers only a limited stock? After those are produced, there will be some hardcover versions that are avaliable but they won't have the foil or extra "perks" that came with the succesfull kickstarter.
Nope! You will be able to buy the super fancy book exactly like in the Kickstarter, and only buy the ones you want if you don't want them all. It'll cost some more per book, but if you want 3 out of 4 for instance you'll still come out ahead.
I assumed that these books would see mass publication since the Kickstarter was so successful, but I bought in assuming it could still take a while to get them in stores. What I'm upset about is the fact that the ebooks/audiobooks are now available to nonbackers before backers get their print copies. I may have access to those as well, but priority should be given to backers to have a reasonable amount of time to read the books, and we all know there are plenty of people who prefer to read print. That's a huge reason why Kickstarters are popular. People want to feel like they'll get exclusive early access.
It's pretty clear that they didn't expect this massive success. I think he said they originally requested from the printer for 100,000 books, 25,000 each but after the kickstarter they had to up that to 600,000. They were likely planning to sell any extras after fulfillment and not print anymore originally, but after having such a high demand of course they would sell as many as people would buy. That's just business, why would you limit something when there are clearly many people who want it? Maybe they should have been a bit more clear about how everything works and that it's not necessarily going to be exclusive to those who originally backed it. Personally I'd say FOMO was big factor in why I chose to back it. I didn't want to miss out, I was swept up like everyone else but I don't regret it at all. I can't wait to get my stuff, I'm just disappointed that the swag boxes cost so much so I couldn't afford to add them at the time. They should make those available as well as the premium hardcovers.
I hope people who overstretched themselves financially are all kids who get a fixed allowance. Anything else doesnt seem possible, at least not in the US, maybe elsewhere? Assuming it could be true implies alot bad things...
I'm happy it will be available. I couldn't justify the shipping, I'm not in the states. So I only purchased the digital and audio book. I don't have Spotify though so that went to my friend and I can't listen to it 😕 😭 and the book is pdf so I need to use my computer to read it. I haven't even really started to read it yet. Any time I re read his books I use audible and I thought thats what these books would go to.
I can sympathise, BioWare sold the digital content in the ME2 Collector's Edition for a fraction the cost, and then made content only available on PS3 like a slap in the face for everyone that stuck with the franchise from the original... 🤔 It's poor form...
If you “needed” the collector’s edition, you don’t get to complain about the price/package options. Otherwise should have just gotten the pdf for the content, or just waited for them to hit the shelves. She’s just mad and wants to blame someone other than herself.
My big issue with how it was handled was that I don't recall Sanderson/Dragonsteel ever saying that anyone will be allowed to buy the books online. I wish he were more transparent about those so that if people really wanted a particular book and didn't want to pay the full bundle they could just buy them whenever they wanted and be reassured they will have the chance to listen to them or read them online, which I don't really like but to each their own.
He should have waited until all Kickstarter books were shipped to backers before allowing traditional published books to come out. 3 months is nothing, and given their printing delays might end up BEING nothing. Saying "We might publish these with traditional publishing in the future! But we don't know so buy now! Tee hee! 😉" Then turning around and saying, yeah you can just buy a hardback on Amazon for like 1/2 the price and BTW this edition will still be pretty good and you just have to wait a couple months and don't have to pay absurd shipping prices! That's what's kind of offensive. He talks all the time about fulfilling promises he makes in the text of the books and this whole thing COMPLETELY overwhelmed them. IMO they got greedy/too excited when his regular publisher/editor was just like falling all over themselves to publish them through traditional channels too.
Only reason I purchased them and there is because it was pretty clear imo that this SPECIFIC Fancy version would only be sold to the backers and that they would traditionally publish normal versions later. If I could have just got the three cosmere books in the fancy edition later and saved at least 50 bucks, I would have. I think dragonsteel knew what we thought. Why would there be a rush to get the Kickstarter If not? It's not like it wasn't gonna be funded.. they knew that. Just complete false advertising imo. Could have waited when I had the money. I think she was gatekeepinh for the exclusive foil editions not the norms. Which of you watch the Kickstarter it seems pretty straightforward that these were exclusive to backers and that if there were extras they'd be sold after but not printed in this specific configuration. Pissed as fuck. Very misleading. I don't care what anyone thinks, if you have this many people having the same assume, than you didn't do your job communicating to you customers. Pretty straightforward to be honest.
They actually said the fancy versions “might” not be available again. Which is a pretty normal thing to say when you don’t know how well the Kickstarter will do. If they said they will be available later and it bombed them everyone would be pissed for that reason.

The letter they sent out said they’d be available indefinitely.
That’s what I thought but no. Last week they announced the premium editions will be a regular stock item at dragonsteel and available indefinitely.
Spotify and speechify both have free versions so you can access the books that way! :)
@@cosmerejunkie7931He states that he isn’t in the states, and I believe that Spotify only currently has audiobooks in the US.
@@michaelcampbell204 Oh what a bummer! I don't know anything about where Spotify boos are available haha
I can sympathise, BioWare sold the digital content in the ME2 Collector's Edition for a fraction the cost, and then made content only available on PS3 like a slap in the face for everyone that stuck with the franchise from the original... 🤔
It's poor form...
This person didn't read
Don't spend money that you can't afford to spend.
Good advice
