My hometown of Chattanooga, TN has something sort of like this just a lot smaller called the Incline Railway. It was built in the 1890s for transporting tourists up Lookout Mtn. Now it’s a tourist attraction in its own right. It’s cool to see incline railways in other places!

Except for one thing....the worlds oldest Funicular railway (cog railway) is the Reisszug which has been in operation since the 1500's.....in Austria...
Cog railway and a funicular are not the same. A funicular, as you probably know, is a railway that is pulled by a rope. The Latin for ‘rope’ or ‘cable’ is funis (as in funambulist, a tightrope walker), and the diminutive of funis is funiculus.
Living in New Hampshire, having a world's first in your backyard is pretty amazing as are the white mountains. You have to come back and summit and hopefully the weather is better. As a train enthusiasts myself I'm loving this series keep up the great work. Also the Conway Scenic Railroad Notch Train is definitely worth checking out if you do make it back to NH.

FYI, the Appalachian Trail crosses over the top of Mt Washington. During the summer months many hikers cross the mountain each day. There is a hiking tradition of mooning the train when it comes by the trail.
The Texas eagle was the Very first train I had ever taken back in 2010 to visit my best friend down in Houston TX. Splurged for the roomete and left a blizzard in Michigan only to wake up in Little Rock to green grass and blue skies. Since that day I’ve flown only once and though I don’t mind it there’s nothing like a train ride. With the whole world coming to an end (as I call it lol) I’ve decided to change my career and become and travel advisor and specialize in train travel and Canada. I never miss and episode and can’t wait for your thoughts on the eagle. Maybe one day we will share a train ride together. Tell them safe travels my friend
Another great installment on this marvelous journey. It's a pity you didn't get to experience what is sometimes referred to as the worst weather in the world. The summit holds the world record (231 miles per hour (372 km/h)) for the highest wind speed recorded that was not associated with a hurricane or tornado. Wow! On to Los Angeles. I wonder if you took a ride on the shortest railroad in the world, Angels Flight. It's within the city of Los Angeles, about a mile from Union Station. I've been to Los Angeles but never rode that particular railway. I truly like the episodes with your father since he's my age and somehow puts up with the young whippersnapper that you are. Be well.
Sure you weren't able to summit because of track work, but it's not about the destination, it's about the journey. And above all, you won your friends' hearts. As steep as the railway was, it was a small price to pay for salvation. Not to mention the repair shop was incredible.
I’m from nh and I’ve been on the cog railway a few times but I’ve only been to the summit once! It does have some of the harshest weather in the world, so not exactly surprising. There are two running races that go to the summit.
I am so invested in this series! I live in Florida and you showed me the Brightline railway that I had never even heard of before. I definitely want to check out all these unique trains

I've done 40 of the 50 US state highpoints and when we did Mt. Washington we stayed at the Omni and took the Cog Railway to the summit, just to embrace the quirkiness of the place. I originally decided to do it as sort of a joke, but I was floored by how cool the area was - it's a completely unique experience that you can't replicate anywhere in the United States. To be honest, it was one of the first thing that got me interested in trains! So, thanks for making this video. It all comes full circle.
I'm a teacher and I was just talking to my daughter how a trip across country on train, should be part of the curriculum. We have a class that makes and sells pesto to raise money for a trip to Brazil, every year! 😄
Mike that is so kind of you that you got to invite you're dad along for the trip. Cherish every moment with him, just like how I did with my dad until his passing Saturday! I remember taking him on Amtrak as we took a Amtrak Thruway bus from Vancouver BC to Seattle then the Coast Starlight Sea-Lax, then the Southwest Chief from Lax to KCY all to visit my dad's side of the family in Missouri.

The first cog railway was the Middleton Railway between Middleton and Leeds in West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, where the first commercially successful steam locomotive, Salamanca, ran in 1812. This used a rack and pinion system designed and patented in 1811 by John Blenkinsop.
I went on the Cog railway a few days ago from when this was uploaded. It was clear on the way up and as we spent time at the summit, the clouds came in and became foggy but as we got down, it got better and then on our way back, there was a huge cell of thunderstorms and heavy rain. It was an awesome experience and something I would highly recommend you do again in the future!
I feel sad about how the car industry destroyed the US train system. Denver could've been a train hub where the west and east would be connected but welp...
I am grateful to all these people who take a camera with them on these adventures. I might never get to see any of these places with out them taking us along I am not sure if it makes me said our happy but I am grateful to see these places at all

I just returned from a bucket list trip: West Coast to East Coast on the Coast Starlight, California Zephyr, Capital Limited, and Pennsylvanian. I saw lots of beautiful scenery. Had two engine breakdowns with a couple hours delay, but managed to make all connections. Trains were pretty full of paying passengers, but I used loyalty points from my Amtrak credit card. Food was great, slept well in my roomettes, service was mostly good. I did notice a strange effect after 5 days on the train, wobbly legs like after a sea voyage.
Nice work, sir! Every time I vacation in the US I book in at least one overnight Amtrak ride. Though I was sick as a dog at the end, Chicago to LA on the Southwest Chief, I saw so much amazing country!

As a frequent NH hiker, it was great to see the viewpoint from the cog! One time we practically had the summit to ourselves and it was because of the “Climb to the Clouds” practice run, so they closed the auto road and cog to tourists. Definitely worth checking out videos of those car races! (Also clear skies due to the heat wave!)
I have been on the Cog Railroad many years ago and it was a blast. That was when they still had Steam operating, but it is nice to see that they have both steam and diesel locomotives operating together and that is awesome to see the new repair shops down there. Also, the view on the summit is breathtaking

I don't know if you're aware but there's a 6 week long campaign called #LoveYourRailway meant to bring awareness to heritage railways to keep them operating with the help of visits, donations, and volunteers. I joined the cog team this year as an engineer. Greatest office in the world! Too bad you couldn’t get a peek in the old shop, the dark, dirty, wavy floors and old smells really bring you back in time.
11:53 everytime i see the mount washington hotel i think back to the time that my cousin and i snuck inside the hotel and made our way to the outdoor pool, we just came back from climbing a local mountain, the pool view was great. it was flurrying and you could see the big white field past the pool with the mountains in the foreground. such an amazing experience
I was an episode early but I knew you'd be coming to NH for the Cog! So glad you enjoyed it and if you're ever in the neighborhood again, the summit is absolutely worth a revisit so you can make it all the way to the top. The views in all directions are just beyond words when the weather is clear :)

I poured the concrete at the new shop there! Such an amazing place to visit (the railway) I'm glad to see you had a good time there even though you were the only patrons! The last time I rode the cog, it was driven exclusively by steam trains, they didn't have any diesels yet... It was interesting the only connection between the engine and coach is a string! I also used to work at the Mt Washington Hotel too and the stories from the staff is something worth listening to, Stickneys is the place to be and have amazing food too! Thanks for giving northenr NH some new light!
About 5 years ago my Mother, Sister and I took a fall colors trip back east from our home in Idaho. The tour offered 4 train rides and one of them was the Cog. The day we rode up was beautiful and exciting. My Sister and I went to the spot that is the very top of Mt. Washington. The next day leaving the area was cloudy and chilly. We still talk about the trip!
I've been to "New England" in the past and had lunch in the Omni Mt. Washington Resort where after, I went to the long porch and sat in the comfortable chair and spied from afar the Cog Railway climbing the mountain. Didn't do that but, after this, I think I'll have too at some point. Thank you Michael!

I grew up in Massachusetts and my father lived in New Hampshire, so as a result I had several trips up Mt Washington, both the car route and the cog railway. It's been about 45 years since my last trip up the mountain-thanks for the memories and it was great to see you all enjoy it so much!
Mike, your travel and train adventures are always enjoyable to experience. This present series is fun to watch. I hope once you get to Alaska that you have the White Pass & Yukon in your plans. Maybe return to BC and home via Prince Rupert. Just sayin'.
Have been on Cog Railway 2x. First time was a trip with my parents when I was in my teens and then again a few years ago with my kids . A fun motel we stayed at when I was little was the Seven Dwarfs Motel and I was surprised to see it is still operating . Had lots of un playing in the stream that runs behind the motel .

Where I worked in Pittsburgh, Pa., you could see the incline going up to Mt. Washington from my office window. My Daughter did a report on inclines. It turned out to be very fascinating with the history behind the inclines, how they came to be, how many were left in the world. The sunset from Mt. Washington down on the town was also amazing with the reflection off the PPG building.
New Hampshire has been such a surprising diversion on this trip. I'd certainly like to go on that cog railway . Can't wait to see the rest of this adventure.
Yes, we have a rack& pinion train track in Tasmania that goes for several miles through the rough mountain terrain which I went on several years ago with my Dad. Very noisy & slow but very enjoyable as it was a trip in a lifetime. Greetings from Australia.

I live 45 mins west of Chattanooga and im always on the lookout for trains when i go there!

I got to experience the highest cog railway at Pikes Peak near Colorado Springs. Definitely a unique experience.

We took that trip just a few years ago. At the time, most of the locomotives were live steam --- nice to see they still have some in the fleet.

I'm from New England. First time I went up Mt. Washington was this train. Also, hiked it via the lions head trail last summer. Everyone should visit.

I poured the concrete at the new shop there! Such an amazing place to visit (the railway) I'm glad to see you had a good time there even though you were the only patrons!
The last time I rode the cog, it was driven exclusively by steam trains, they didn't have any diesels yet... It was interesting the only connection between the engine and coach is a string!
I also used to work at the Mt Washington Hotel too and the stories from the staff is something worth listening to, Stickneys is the place to be and have amazing food too!

About 5 years ago my Mother, Sister and I took a fall colors trip back east from our home in Idaho. The tour offered 4 train rides and one of them was the Cog. The day we rode up was beautiful and exciting. My Sister and I went to the spot that is the very top of Mt. Washington. The next day leaving the area was cloudy and chilly. We still talk about the trip!
This is just one of the many things I love about living in new Hampshire
I’ve been all the way to the top. It’s an incredible adventure. You have to go back and go all the way up.
I've been to "New England" in the past and had lunch in the Omni Mt. Washington Resort where after, I went to the long porch and sat in the comfortable chair and spied from afar the Cog Railway climbing the mountain. Didn't do that but, after this, I think I'll have too at some point. Thank you Michael!
Love this series. One thing though how can you visit the Mount Washington hotel and not mention the fact it’s supposedly haunted! Keep up the great work!

I grew up in Massachusetts and my father lived in New Hampshire, so as a result I had several trips up Mt Washington, both the car route and the cog railway. It's been about 45 years since my last trip up the mountain-thanks for the memories and it was great to see you all enjoy it so much!

I hope you're doing the Pike's Peak cog railway on this tour. It's a great experience, and it was just rebuilt in recent years, but has great history.
this is a far cooler version of the polar express but with a even cooler dude and every episode you learn more and more about trains and history

Have been on Cog Railway 2x. First time was a trip with my parents when I was in my teens and then again a few years ago with my kids . A fun motel we stayed at when I was little was the Seven Dwarfs Motel and I was surprised to see it is still operating . Had lots of un playing in the stream that runs behind the motel .
The summit is amazing. The auto-road is a great way to get to the top as well.

Where I worked in Pittsburgh, Pa., you could see the incline going up to Mt. Washington from my office window. My Daughter did a report on inclines. It turned out to be very fascinating with the history behind the inclines, how they came to be, how many were left in the world. The sunset from Mt. Washington down on the town was also amazing with the reflection off the PPG building.
If you are ever in Detroit, you should visit the Ford museum. They have many old rr engines and cars . Very cool.
New Hampshire has been such a surprising diversion on this trip. I'd certainly like to go on that cog railway . Can't wait to see the rest of this adventure.

Yes, we have a rack& pinion train track in Tasmania that goes for several miles through the rough mountain terrain which I went on several years ago with my Dad. Very noisy & slow but very enjoyable as it was a trip in a lifetime. Greetings from Australia.
Ive hiked Mt. Washington many times as i live in NH. The COG railway is always amazing to watch go by. Its great to see something about NH on youtube.

My wife & I took that trip last September (2021). We lucked out with a perfect weather day. Got to the top and we were able to see forever.
I remember watching this video almost a year ago - I just got back from visiting my aunt in New Hampshire and we all took the train to the summit! It was a great trip and I wouldn’t have know about the cog railway without this video! We even rode the same yellow train! Thanks for the great video!!

I came on to find out about Priceline Train from Miami to Orlando, and somehow was sucked into watching your train travel journey. Loving it. I always wondered why my mom prefers train ride over flights, not I know.
