Keep in mind these cars did not have handbrakes like we have them today; because of the center diff they couldn't get -just- the rear wheels to lock (to get the car around you brake and approach the corner, turn, clutch in and then tug the handbrake to slide around) so even though they used it for launches it wasn't good for much else. Lots of pendulum turns and clutch kicks coupled with some pretty rear-biased brakes, ~59% brake bias and of course biased more to the front on tarmac. Those maneuvers are difficult to make on the asphalt so I still applaud the first driver :)
Also used left foot breaking to help turn-in, the SWB was worse with understeer than the LWB, Audi sport knew this, but figured that being shorter would be easier to destabilize the car and help it turn in....... not sure they were that successful.
@@19SAS Well if you watch old footage of the S1E2 it actually understeered more than oversteered. It was almost like drivers like Röhrl and Mouton would brake hard and get the body lined up for the exit then clutch kicked and planted the throttle - that is to say it was already in a lateral slide into the turn but using it's monstrous torque to actually make the car stop sliding and go forward again in a very short amount of time
@@codysykes5568 totally agree, all the audis except maybe the very last Pikes Peak car, which, despite still being front engined, managed more or less 50/50 weight balance, suffered chronic understeer, engines were just too far forward of the front axel, to rectify this problem was quite easy, just move the engine to the middle like everyone else, audi sport asked Audi, and they got a BIG NO, Roland Gumbert was sacked if i remember correctly, or at least got into a load of trouble building a mid engine SWB Sport S1 without Audi's knowledge which, indecently, was rumoured to be at around 1.5 secs a mile quicker, Walter was possibly the best at controlling its understeer, using the so called Scandinavian flick while loading more weight to the front with some heavy left foot breaking, it was all about squaring the car up at a corner then blast away in a more or less straight line.. Hannu was brilliant with the SWB on tarmac and could make it oversteer at will
The Audi AG called this Car " Audi Sport Quattro" and the following Car " Audi Sport Quattro S1 " By FIA rules the cars names have been changed into " Audi Sport Quattro S1" and " Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2 " , the true Audi Fans give a fuck about Fia´s Names ... For us its an Audi Sport Quattro ....
