What about electricians that do commercial work and small works that don't belong to competent persons schemes? They are qualified to work on electrical installation so why should they be discriminated against.
Surely - the SIMPLE answer is for DNO'S - and meter changers - to be instructed to fit an isolator in every case. Even if.... when you call out the dno to pull a fuse - they "have" to fit an isolator!!! Had this been the case - ESPECIALLY with the smart meter roll out - "pulling the fuse" should NEVER be neccessary. Surely that is the way to go???
So a kitchen fitter with a couple of 6 week courses under his belt can pull a cut out fuse but someone with years of post qualification experience but no CPS membership cannot. This is utterly ridiculous! How does it work in the case of an employee? Say a newly qualified electrician, his/her employer is CPS registered but he or she is not. Does the newly qualified spark have to get the QS out or can it be pulled by the people on site? Are they covered by the employer's CPS or not? The entire CPS system needs a complete rethink. I'm on Tyneside, I could be QS for a company which employs people in Somerset. I probably haven't met these people and I definitely will not have seen the job but the EIC would cross my desk and it would be perfectly acceptable for me to sign it off and issue the appropriate notification. The sooner we all have individual competence like the gas industry the better off we will be.

If you are a qualified electrician having completed an accredited apprenticeship you are a competent person-end of argument.You shouldn’t have to be a member of a Competent Person Scheme.Just another money making scheme for the government .
