Further to my earlier post.My dad and his seven(surviving) siblings were raised in two rooms in Harbour View. My uncle Mick who lived in French's Avenue, had a spoon or other piece of cutlery or crockery from every liner that must have docked in the harbour. We thought he'd sailed on so many ships! Mick and my Dad Jack and another of their comrades called Forster used to talk of days drinking in The Submarine Bar( no-one seems to have heard of it) in Cobh. Forster's recollection of soldiering in West Cork during the Civil War was- Schull, Skibereen, haw haw haw and Ballydehob... I think he was British. Nobody seems to know of Belvelly Barracks. But on the night of the Army census in 1922 John and Michael Donovan were the first names on the roll. They had enlisted at Cork Female Prison in August 1922. I still have pics of Mick mustering the old brigade through the streets of Cobh for the 1966 50th anniversary of the rebellion. Me and my brother Mick at Beal na mBlath in the same year, drinking Tanora! Hope to come back (covid permitting) for Collins' 100th anniversary in 2022, bringing my 16 year old daughter, who has never visited Ireland...What a trip ! :)
What a charming video picture of Cobh. My father Jack was born (1904) and raised in Harbour View. He worked at Clyde Shipping Company where his father was a foreman. After doing his bit with the Fianna he joined the new Free State Army in 1922 and was stationed originally at Belvelly (when it was a barracks). His brother Mick O'Donovan ( a serious Cobh character) joined up the same time and was latterly a postman and employed at Bank Of Ireland. He was a stalwart of The Ramblers Club. Both Jack and Mick are buried in the Old Church cemetery. Happy memories of swimming at Cuskinny and the Tall Ships race.

i was not born in cobh unlike my mother who was born and bred, i miss all the old characters that i met every year during the long summerholidays.the most spiritual and awe inspiring place ,for me at least on earth,god bless sammy and all the wonderful people of cobh

I have loved this my mummy was born in Cobh Helen Osullivan brothers Michael Osullivan (seamus) Johnn Osullivan (the Greek) George Osulliva (Chicken) sisters Ann,Margaret,Maureen,Thresea hopefully someone one here will be able to tell me how Chicken is health wise id very much appreciate it its been a good few years since ive been over

@@kieranmackessy5533 Thank you so much do you know how long he has been in hospital and what for sorry to burden you with the questions i used to have contact with Christy & Louise Courtney but my aunty Maureen who passed away was the one that used to keep in touch with George the most she would come over most years ,and i have not heard from the Louise for a good few years Did you know any other members of the family i was lucky enough to meet them all at some point .

Some fantastic words of truth Sammy which were unfortunately restricted for the video Port of Cork are the biggest shower of....... that ever set foot on OUR beautiful town they do fuck all when ever there’s a problem only blame the council or say that has nothing to do with us ring the council get them to sort it out.
Grateful to have had the opportunity to photograph these wonderful characters over the years, and record their stories, before they are lost forever. Thanks for watching....

Michael (Shakum) was one of the greatest characters in Cobh. He always greeted people with a "Yo Ho".
