Code Geass: The Evil Paradox

- From Code Geass R2, Episode 4, this particular scene asks the age old question brought on by Machiavelli's "The Prince": Is it okay to commit acts of evil if the outcome itself is good? Lelouch's answer may or may not be in accordance with society, but it illustrates a very good point.
I do not own Code Geass or any merchandise affiliated with it. This is merely being used as a tool for my students.

Indeed in fact he’s in a certain type of anti-hero of its own category. a Byronic hero you would call him. Look it up on TV tropes you’ll be fascinated.

anti-hero? he started a rebelion with 5 people that he did not even knew and pulled of the impossable multiple times against the strongest country in the world and also went up against a imortal god and defated him then he took over the whole world all to kill himself in the end to become imortal giving up a chance to ever live a normal life just to make his sister dream come true he is a genuis who ''sacrficed himself'' for his sister he is hero

The amount of foreshadowing in this scene...Lelouch ended up figuring out the only answer to the paradox
He didn't. The ending was dumb. Everyone would have forgotten about it and decide to start fighting over something stupid within a week.
@@CrashSable not in the same uncontrollable scale as before. The world Lelouch was born in is like ww2 without ending with Britania invading everywhere with seemingly endless resources.
Kaleidoscope the best ending would have been, if Lelouch „killed“ himself like in the series but didn’t dissolve Britannia.
The World would be united under the strongest Empire the world had ever seen, lead by Nunnally the most kind hearted person in that whole anime world. An Empress truly worthy of the Throne.
(I mean at that point there is really no way anyone could defeat Britannia, it’s just unrealistic, even lelouch couldn’t defeat Britannia without the Geass and since he is immortal he could watch over Nunnallys bloodline so they stay on the good side)
(Or Lelouch could basically become the W40k Emperor ;)
@@Swiss_femboy lmao, Britania is literally to icon of what he hated most, and preventing the world from going 40k is his sole reason for doing all this. If he just gonna become the next god emperor, wtf did Euphine die for? Lelouch can simply find a way to return to noble court and bid his claim to throne himself if he want to become the emperor.
Kaleidoscope Britannia could be changed, I never said keep Charles Darwinism crap. Like Germany isn’t the same as the 3rd Reich, one could call it the second Britannian Empire.
And the W40k reference was more a joke but in fact he could be like the Emperor before his „ascension“ to the golden Throne. Leading Humanity from the shadows and only intervening when necessary wich is exactly what he does after the series i assume.

Lelouch did it right. He became the evil that destroyed the previous greater evil then killed himself and buried the evil with him
Then I shall stick to being good. Its end goal isn't to destroy evil. Its end goal is to help the people.
Zachary Tsai u cant help the people if evil is ruling over everything. ur help is insignificant at that point
Lelouch knows that. That's why he checkmated himself. He won in every way. He saved the world by holding it hostage and then allowing Zero to kill him. He got Suzaku to take care of Nunnally, and he got to be with CC (think about how that's possible for a moment). In one massive gambit he destroyed the evil in the world and won everything.

so in this paradox, regardless of what happens it seems like evil will always remain. If one stains their hands with evil, they become evil themselves and if one surrenders to evil then it's as if they permit evil to stay in existence. however, what if the one who stains their hands with evil dies after defeating evil? It's difficult enough to remove evil from the equation without having someone to either become evil and permit evil's existence. It seems to me the only solution to removing evil, is it's own self destruction which a lot of times what happens to characters that become evil, they eventually become their own worst enemy.
This, is a very good observation.
It's exactly what Lelouch did at the end of R2 when he died, since he became evil himself.
Xuan C. pretty much . lelouch made himself a scapegoat so that all the evil woulod be focused on him and he let the evil die with him. brilliant plan i say even if it meant his sacrifice.
"In this life, we have to make many choices. Some are very important choices. Some are not. Many of our choices are between good and evil. The choices we make, however, determine to a large extent our happiness or our unhappiness, because we have to live with the consequences of our choices." - James E. Faust.
but what stops one from commiting evil to destroy evil and then just....stoping and letting the evil end after
the flaw with that paradox is the idea that a evil act makes one evil which allso tends to ignore intent
shooting 3 people for fun
shooting 3 people who rapped your wife
shooting at a deer missing and hissing 3 people
all 3 are shooting 3 people but the intent is different and drastically changes if the guy is evil after or not
He told them exactly how to solve the paradox but no one noticed. Become the evil, and destroy the evil.
You got to respect Lelouch, anyone else put in his situation would smash Kallen, but he is to busy saving the world for that.

To commit evil in order to destroy an even greater evil. Leloich's logic is sound. Looking back, Britannia had always ranted that any of their actions was in the name of justice. "Justice" is always such an overused word.
Considering justice is a very abstract word, their ranting of justice is more like propaganda rather than literal truth.
No different than in the world of One Piece
But what is true "Justice", really?
Is sentencing a serial killer to death just, or is sparing him just?
There is no right answer, from a moral standpoint.
@@orekusic3584 What the hell is Justice. All I can see are principles
Problem is when you are commiting evil to destroy greater evil, you can also fail and thus end up with two evils.
It is the same thing with breaking rules and laws to correct something you think is wrong. One out of hundred people will correct certain evil ad fix the situation but remaining 99 will just make everything worse if you would let them do it.
ALL HAIL LELOUCH
ALL HAIL LELOUCH VI BRITANNIA!!!!!!
Lelouch always asks a question before taking action. Its actually a good habit since he gets their view of what he does. Here it was guilfords view of justice would not always prevail and the only option to win was evil. There are also the scenes in r1 r2 where he asks the soldiers when cornered and gets his geass. The second time he asks what their views are of friendship, revenge, power, and justice while they just answer that he is worthless and just have to die. When he wants to join the UFN he asks kaguya what her view of rulers best trait should be and she answers pride while he and in relation to his plan says "The will to destroy everything AND EVEN YOURSELF"
"To rise above monsters, one must sacrifice his humanity."
Conner Forbis and one's insanity.
Case in point, Vlad Tepes III. History has stained him as an inhuman monster, when he did what he did - of course not denying or condoning the brutality - to keep his home from being invaded and its people and culture ripped apart and eradicated.

I Agree with Lelouch truly destroying evil requires that of the same it's power and destruction is a necessity over a stead fast and justified Noble move
Sparky510Games but then evil still remeins? so someone else wants to defeat the evil comitted by you. Lelouchs way is basically self destructive.
Noobster Boobi but if it Obliterates the evil you fight then it matters not
Noobster Boobi what is evil is completely suggestive; you can never have a universal justice, there will always be someone who sees something as evil. If your actions result in what is considered a greater good, then everything is fine.
Sparky510Games this is why I value lelouch as a hero. He doesn't care which enemy would die even if it makes him evil in the public eyes.
"Everyone spends their lives trying to balance their world between good and evil." - Laurell K. Hamilton
Lelouche actually choices a third option by the end of the series
become the greatest evil to destroy all forms of evil then die so the good never have to stain there hands.
The zero reqium

Whether we like it or not the cycle of evil is Neverending
Benjamin Arredondo but everyone is evil even if they don't know it. For me, I would risk an entire nation or group of people to save millions of not billions of the entire world
"If everyone is evil, no one is evil" - myself.
If you become evil defeat evil then what exactly did you accomplish? How long before you become a greater evil than the evil you set out to defeat?
Funnily enough, he found the answer at the end of the series.
Become evil to destroy evil and then destroy yourself so no evil remains.

The fact that he saved them so many times, risking his own life, just so they could betray him immediately after they knew he was Lelouch. Because yeah, he is a genius without whom we couldn't do shit and saved us many times but he used us! Oh my God, crazy!
Lelouch has done great but he has made fatal mistakes. I know it was an accident but he did use Geass on Euphemia to kill a lot of Japanese. That alone was enough for the black knights to betray him. Also, during the black rebellion, he did abandon his army just to save his sister. At the end of the series he resolved the paradox: he became the ultimate evil to wipe out all other evil, then he arranged his own death.
“What do you do when there is an evil you cannot defeat by just means? Do you stain your hands with evil to destroy evil? Or do you remain steadfastly just and righteous even if it means surrendering to evil?”
Mibevan either way evil still exists proving Lelouch’d point right entirely that no matter which path you choose there’s still going to be evil regardless.

thank you for quoting the scene we all jsut watch.
Your reward is a swirle.
Please administer it to yourself
The thing that I always take away from this scene is the death of Bart. It's such a small detail, but it's there to remind us that all these people Lelouch kills are really people just as much as any of the protagonists. They have people who care about them and that they care about. To anyone on the other side either by fate or choice, Zero's clever strategies and turnaround are not brilliant or divine but devilish and despicable tricks that took those that they loved away. The thing is that Zero never denied that part of himself. A lot of people say that this evil paradox is here to foreshadow the ending where he commits the greatest evils to save the world, but he has been constantly considering this paradox since the very first episode and making trade offs that no good person would ever do. He never let's himself get caught in the illusion that he is a good person. He wants to commit evil so other people don't have to in the future
It's what makes him such a compelling character, he's not a protagonist in the traditional sense, to him everything he's done was to destroy the current world full of evils so that it can be reborn with his death. He foreshadows his own death multiple times
excellently stated
The soundtrack whenever Zero executes a plan is soooo my jam.
Its my ringtone😂
I also take the question as asking "which would you prefer, black or a darkened shade of grey?"
NEVER... let lelouch ask you a question
He requested a duel, didn't say other people wouldn't do stuff outside of it and dipped out of said duel after. He kept his word
Crazy stuff like this made me love geass
fr man i couldnt think of that in a million years
The end result of useing evil to destroy evil is a less evil version remains.
As I sometimes say... "Sometimes the solution that we seek is not the one desired, but the one feared most: sometimes, to achieve what we know is right, we must do what is considered to be wrong."
All these helpless people who were incapable of winning without Zero, for whom Zero did all the real work, whom Zero saved the bacon of... quickly betrayed him over a very questionable deal...
...and got pretty much rewarded for it by the narrative.
If there truly is a Third Season, I hope Lelouch gets back at these guys in some way.
Ares99999 Yeah, Ohgi got off real easy there.
They didn't even let the guy who saved them from oppression and death explain why he did such terrible things, they were willing to shoot him at a moment's notice.
Honestly, they knew he was trying to unite the world and bring everyone freedom and Ohgi simply asks for Japan to be freed. None of them are even worthy of the gentler world that Lelouch gave them. Among them only Kallen, CC and Rollo truly cared about Lelouch. The rest of them had selfish agendas and at the end enjoyed the credit of being heroes who liberated the world even though they were traitors.
To Kallen, Lelouch simply was angry at their betrayal and thereby became the evil he once stood against so her actions were understandable.
Although it was Lelouch's wish, Suzaku never deserved the mantle of Zero. Honestly, if I were Lelouch, I would bring Jeremiah, cancel Live Geass that was on Suzaku and then use my Geass to make him obey Lelouch and Zero. I would then have him use the disguise mask to look like Lelouch, make use of a fake strategy using Geass and finally kill Suzaku disguised as me. I would then live with CC as I should be dead.
Hopefully in R3 we see Lelouch actually survive due to the whole Code from Charles theory we all believe.
Seeing comments like these reminds me of how misleading the promotional was for the new Code Geass movie. It was shady asf.
@@supersani21 Suzaku became a dick ...but it's not like Lelouch ever told him the truth of what happened. That it was an accident and had the incident not gotten uncontrollable he was actually going to change his plans. He wanted Suzaku to be upset at him as punishment. He thought he deserved it.

Whats important is that evil can never be destroyed. It is rooted in mankind nature and it is something that can never be changed. By attempting to eradicate evil it only breeds further bloodshed and violence. The only way to break that cycle was through self sacrifice. To give up your own happiness for the sake of others, that is no easy task. Lelouch knows this at the end. He chose to face justice for all the blood he has spilled and in the end, he manage to break the cycle atlast. Now lets see how long it will last in R3.
Phat Huynh Unfortunately he has the curse of C.C at the end so he was still alive after that public execution. He just exiled after so peace would remains. So he chose to leave everyone in sake of a happy world. Only C.C and his knight (the one he used the orange tactics against) remained with him. He was the cart driver in the last scene.
