My name is Dennis Davis I served aboard the USS Shangri-la from August 1959 to May of 1960. During that time, we were in dry dock in Bremerton, Washington> seeing an aircraft carrier in dry dock with no water under her was daunting. In March we left to serve on the East Coast from Mayport, Florida. Going around South America was quite an adventure. Very few sailors ever go around the Horn of South America. I enjoyed my time in the Navy.

Thank you for the video. I love learning about the USS Shangri-La. My father was in the US Navy and served aboard her during 1945-1946. He was a fireman and worked in the engine room. He was a gifted mechanic. I am proud of his service to our country.

Grandfather served as the radar operator in late 1950’s on her, always loved hearing his stories. When I asked what had happened to the ship he responded: "they turned her into razor blades". Miss his wisdom. If there any young men reading this who have their grandfathers still cherish the wisdoms they can give you.

My father was a Marine Corporal stationed on-board the USS Shangri-La (CV-38) on her maiden voyage from 1944-1946. He was a 40mm dual quad loader during general quarters and served as the CO's guard on the bridge. Thanks for the upload.

James, thank you for serving our country. I appreciate the sacrifices you made. (My father served aboard the Shangri-la from 1945-46 at the age of 18. He worked with the engines as a fireman.)

My dad was a jet pilot from 1957 to 1959 on the USS Shangri-la. With one of his landings in June or July, 1958, the catch failed to stop his plane and they went overboard. All were fine, but that day still haunts him; did the catch really fail, or did he actually fail the landing? I know they recorded every landing and I would love to know if anyone has video of that landing or knows how I could find one. He's still alive and kicking strong at 88. I found a beautifully framed and matted color photo of the Shangri-La and could his name and rank, etc. He cried he was so touched. So I would love to give him the video of his landing so he can finally have his answer.
