I have to come back and do my Comment I tell you the information you gave. I love it what you said. How to clean my piercing on my ears and it really got better. In 2 weeks. I love it. Thank you ever so much.
I NEEDED this video today! Sooo much qtip shaming on forums, it was making me so confused even after having ten piercings! I had buildup on my tragus and it was so angry and irritated, I swear after I gently removed it with a warm, wet qtip it was so happy and has been healing so well. Thanks for the explanation!! 😍💗
The wound swabs we use in health care are essentially bigger q tips...and no one has ever advised not to swab an open wound because fibre might be left in it 😅. I use them wet then then rise with saline again to wash any potential fibres away.

@@Lynn_Loheide it has definitely depended on location, my psoriasis (luckily) is on my scalp and in my ears, so I have to use qtips in my ears, the rest of my body doesn’t build up and crust as badly. I also haven’t gotten a piercing since I moved to Nashville and it’s far more humid here than where I’m from, I have one planned soon, definitely curious to see if it’s going to change how my body reacts.
Please make a video about cleaning piercings, how long do we have to clean them after getting them, how many times every day, maybe a few ways to clean them, because from a lot of videos online I'm very confused, I'm sure I'm not the only one :) great videos!!!
I always used Q-tips for all my piercings and I've never had any problems with any of them because of it. Not a single piercing I've ever had developed bumps or got infected. Anyone should use whatever works for them.
I love using the thin q-tips especially to get into those tight spots. My daith is in a super tight spot and I use those and they work great! There’s still some I can’t get but not too much.
I use folded tissue and if it's not coming off or making a mess I use a mini q tip soaked in saline solution! For better experience i always spray a good amount of saline 20 minutes before i take a shower and this make rinsing it under the runny water clean it much better
I love wet qtip with neilmed saline. 🤗My piercing always heal so fast and with no infections. Never had an issue. My rook healed perfectly and everyone was so surprised. The qtips remove the crusties so well. A co worker listened to her piercer and didn’t use a qtip. She got an infection. When she started using the qtip her piercing was happy and healing well again.
I was told not to used q-tips for my double helix spray saline let my Crusties fall off on there own and dry with paper towel it’s been almost two months and I had so much buildup and now have a piercing bump so I did a sea salt soak on my ear and used a q-tip my ear felt so much better like it could finally breath
Ahh yes this is why I love you so much!! Nothing ever cleans my piercings like a qtip does and I have skin conditions. I already have a difficult time healing most piercings, without qtips I wouldn’t be able to heal a single one
Long story: My piercer changed my jewellery to implant grade titanium flatback studs. We downsized appropriately. I was told to let the water run over it when I was washing my hair. After 1 year it wasn't healed. I always had a lot of build-up, especially in the back. I have some skin issues as well (like eczema, psoriasis, allergies...the works). She suggested to change to hoops. I brought up my concerns and she said it would be easier for me to remove the crusts and prevent moisture building up behind the flatback. So far, so good. After the swap, my ears have calmed down more than they ever did with flatbacks. ❤ (I know, hoops also considered a big no-no. The piercing is 3 years old. It's just not healing right.)
There are SO many instructions that go out the door with my clients. I am SUPER new to body piercing and I am loving your videos!! I am also pro qtip, when used correctly they absolutely do a better job! I love the pointed ones that can get under the front and back and get ALL of the crusties. I also find these ones do not shed, as they are wound sooooo tight.
Yes yes yes ! I got a septum piercing about a month a go and I think I've got some irritation bumbs. My piercing basically didn't tell me anything about aftercare ! She told me septums were easy to heal and that she would give me a paper with instructions after the piercing. The paper was an A4 piece that gave advice for pretty much every piercing with just a couple of sentences about facial and body piercing (excluding mouth ones) that was just super vague ! I had to call my cousin who got piercied at the same place to get some info + what I had already seen on TikTok but it's been such a bad experience.
Oh my gosh I am so sorry to hear they didn’t really prepare you for healing and aftercare! I have a bunch of blog posts on my website which may help you fill in the blanks. I wish more piercers were more in-depth with care and cleaning needs!
You've already helped me, in fact seeing your posts and knowing I could go back to them helped me feel ready to get it ! I don't regret it at all, and I'm not in pain so I just hope it'll get better. I have EDS, so I did know that I might get some issues, even if my healing isn't that bad compared to what other people's is ! My piercer only seems to have great reviews, and she was recommended to me by my cousin who also got a septum, but my experience seems so different from everyone else ! I'm autistic, so I probably needed a lot more advices than what other people do. I have an appointement with her next week, I hope I'll be able to heal better from now on.
Honestly I'm a little relieved to hear this. I got my rook pierced three months ago and I've been living by Reddit standards and there is so much build-up. I've been spraying the saline, letting it sit and then I rinse it off. I also live in an extremely humid country and had no idea that could play a role as well. I'm going to start using wet Q-tips to see if there's a difference. (Honestly, my piercer recommended Q-tips as well, she even explained how I should use them, but Reddit made me believe they were huge piercing sins so I listened to them... Shame on me) But now I got a little more hope that my rook might just heal after all!
Reddit is convinced that the worst thing you can do to your piercings is use q-tips. Low key I hope someone shares this there and it starts some important discussions about how different all our bodies are and about how aftercare isn’t one size fits all! I am and will be team qtip. I think with a little extra education clients can use em just fine!

I feel I might be one of those people who do need to use qtip, I’ve been spraying it with saline fine mist and use wet qtip Thx you for this informative video, I do feel a bit better using qtip as I do live in TX and my skin can be sensitive
Totally agree! My piercings started getting a lot better since I started using Q-tips. Didn't know humid climates and skin conditions (I have rosacea) could be a cause, interesting! Another tip for others (that you also gave on your blog): I really like the makeup Q-tips, they are much more precise and can get in nooks and crannies without disturbing the piercing too much :) Excellent video!
I've used q tips for all my piercings and they healed without any issues. This november i got a simple lobe piercing and learned that q tips are actually bad and not to use them... fast forward, it's the most problematic piercing I've ever had. it's so difficult to clean it without q tips and it's constantly irritated and I actually developed an irritation bump for the first time ever, and there's so much crust build up at the back! I'm going to my piercer tomorrow to check if it's infected because I'm worried, but I'm definitely going back to q tips ASAP.
Any tips for removing crusties on a double tragus? It's in a place that's difficult, if I look in the mirror, my hand goes in the wrong direction and if I just blindly wipe around I feel I might be poking and moving the jewellery too much. My partner helps me when I do see him but that's not often so the crusties really build up
also lynn do u think u can do a vid on piercings & skin conditions? i have excema & get irritation bumps pretty easily and would like to know more!! thanks :)
im team qtip!! always have been lol :) i have to soak em in saline to clean my piercings because otherwise my piercings get extremely cranky smh. I was never one of those ppl who could let some water over them in the shower or just do a quick spray at my piercings w saline
When I got my first piercing which was my faith piercing I was told to only use the liquid dial soap and rinse it in the shower and I developed bumps so I tried using saline and Qtips and they went a way like a week or two later .
Whoa this is interesting. Every day I'd use q tips because just spraying my nose wouldn't get rid of the crusties, but I'd get fibers wrapped around my nose stud and I'd have to remove it every day with tweezers. I ended up getting an irritation bump that then turned into a keloid 🥲 I had to take it out so I could do pressure therapy and steroid injections. It's wild how much experiences differ! I really value your perspective, so thank you for sharing
I'm team pro cotton bud, to be specific high quality cotton bud. A high quality cotton bud won't disperse easily. I also wet my piercing with saline spray before use cotton bud, then using it wet with saline again and carefully clean it.
I have had to change jewelry that I got pierced with during the healing process because it had too many sharp little edges to catch the Q-tip fibers. My piercer found a lot of success in recommending specific kind of jewelry that are easier to clean, depending on where on the body it was being placed.
i have combo skin and since you can’t use soaps or lotions around the piercings (mine are nostril piercings), i get major dry skin buildup especially after a hot shower bc i can’t exfoliate it. if i didn’t use qtips, all that debris and skin would just stay there bc just wiping it doesn’t do anything.
For some piercings I've had to use Q-tips, for others I didn't have to. I just really tried to paid attention to each healing process, especially when I moved from Cali to Texas and then back again lol. The humidity was not my friend lol. My piercer is awesome, everytime even though I've been there and done that he goes through everything and takes time to talk about how it and then sends me a pdf of aftercare too lol.
Ok I'm absolutely switch to qtips to clean because I have so much very dried on gunk that doesn't want to come off, but I've been so scared to use them.
I definitely have problems where my jewelry spins too much when I use q tips and then I get irritation bumps that form. But I have a hard time removing the crusties that are there!
they can be for the first week or few weeks depending on the piercing, but pus, inflammation, heat, and irritation bumps are all signs you should check back in with your piercer because they are symptoms of an infection
I've been using saline q tips because a wet paper towel is way too hard to use to clean between the small cheap peircing & skin. I finds it more timely to use que tips because the space is minimal and nothing is both thin and has the structure to do so properly with less movement. My piercer was useless with aftercare and I had to research it all because they recommended soap, water, and turning it. If I could rate that place its a 2/5 they didn't even sell saline for god sakes and I wish I could take that tip back because it's not deserved.
oh I did not think someone would use qtips dry :| besides that, qtips vary so much in quality. I used bamboo/cotton ones, wet with NaCl solution (in those small ampoules). first, a drop on a piercing to let it get wet and then gently brushing with wet qtip. then spraying with colloidal silver (as advised by piercer). then if too much water was left I'd gently pat with cotton pad, but around the piercing, not the piercing itself. whatever remained would dry up quickly. it was quick and effective, did that with ears and nipples. if I was to just let the water do the thing piercings would most definitely remain dirty. the crust would get softer, with perhaps bigger bits falling off, but this is not what cleaning is :/ one time I couldn't find those specific qtips I bought at piercing place, so I went with similarly shaped ones. ooooh boy, that went bad. it looked like the second they got wet they started to lose it's shape. I ended up using them just for makeup related things. now they're separated into two boxes, one for piercing cleaning, other for everything else
Hey Lynn can you make a video about makeup and piercings? I’ve had my cheek dermal for about a year and I’m still afraid of getting makeup on it low key lmao when I do wear makeup I just go around my dermal.
hello! i just got my bridge and my vertical labret pierced yesterday,my piercer didn’t give much advice on how to heal them other than to come back in a few weeks to change piercing, i was wondering what the most affective way was to heal your bridge ? i’ve heard slot about the litha method but im just really nervous, i’ve wanted a bridge piercing forever and i’ll be so heartbroken if it rejects please help:(
idc what anyone says I will use a wet q-tip to clean my piercings no matter what. I've had personal issues because of bad cleaning advice from a piercing and it left permanent issues
People need to learn to not make Q-tips so bad, to use on your piercings for cleaning, but they also need to learn that piercers need to learn this to suggesting or telling your client that they have to use salt water to clean the piercings. You also need to take into consideration some people have even more sensitive skin than just psoriasis or anything like that. My skin is so sensitive that my own body wants to give my piercings in infection. My own body wants to do that so in order for my body to except the piercing and do not want to give my piercings infections, I do have to clean my piercings with more of a horse or chemical alcohol I have to clean my piercings with alcohol, and that’s because that’s the only way my body is going to see it as OK. We need to heal this piercing other than that my body will not heal a piercing will not literally I clean my days for two weeks with salt water didn’t start healing at all at all. No signs of healing at all for two weeks. The only thing I got was an infection a very bad infection that went into my ear canal and I had to get eardrops and my doctor told me never ever to use salt water to clean my piercings again and then I have to use alcohol because my ears are so sensitive and so prone to infection that, if I don’t use alcohol, all it’s going to do is cause that piercing not to heal and possibly cause that piercing to reject literally that’s how sensitive my ears are so in order to prevent my piercings from rejecting and to prevent my piercings from getting infection, because my piercings get infection so very easily I have to use alcohol so yes, Q-tips can be bad to use due to fibres that can get caught around the jewellery of the piercing, but also salt water can be bad to use on some peoples ears or piercings for purposes of the fact that they cannot their body cannot heal. Their piercings normally are and that’s why we have to use things like alcohol to help our bodies promote healing my body specifically I am so sensitive, I can’t wear anything but surgical steel and gold and not plated gold I have to wear 10 karat or 14 karat gold and I have to wear like real surgical steel and my ears are so sensitive. I have to clean my ears with alcohol to promote healing because otherwise, my bodies going to see a piercing as here it’s just a wound. Let’s give it an infection get it pussy gross disgusting. Am I used salt water on my nose piercing in my death piercing for a week and it was super fucking infected by the time the end of the week came in it and I didn’t touch it or play with it to cause it. All they did was my two times a day cleaning with salt, water solution, and it did not heal at all and when I was younger, I used salt water solution as well but I did have to end up switching to alcohol just to get my piercings to heal cause I just wouldn’t. Oh I thought it was something that I would grow out of and that like oh OK that just doesn’t work right now because I’m younger, so when I got my first holes and they wouldn’t heal with salt water I clean them with alcohol then I got my second holes when I was 14 and I clean them with alcohol after a week of using salt water cause I got an infection again and then I got my before that I got my helix pierced when I was 13 and that one wouldn’t heal for the longest period of time due to using salt water and I also had to switch to using alcohol for that. I figured OK if she doesn’t work because I’m younger whatever I’ll grow out of it maybe it’s just having a problem with growing with salt healing salt water cause I I just doesn’t work cause I’m young or whatever the case and I tell you I bought premade salt, water, spray, and solution and everything and so then I went and I tried it again and this time I was 22 and again my nose, and my death would not heal at all. All it kept doing was getting sore and it was sore and it got in my death. Got infected really bad and I got an infection in my days and everything else and I had to change to alcohol but I just wanted to make sure that my skin just does not heal with salt water so I tried one more time with my third holes and even then they got so badly infected after a week of using them only a week I got them pierced on like a Saturday and I only use the salt water up to a Friday and by the Friday morning it was hurting so bad I had such a bad infection and let me tell you I was cleaning my piercings like my piercer told me to with the salt water solution spray twice a day properly and everything and I still got an infection so in the end it could go. Either way Q-tips can be bad to clean with but also salt water can be bad to clean with as well for some people I and their piercings and they just don’t heal and I had to tell my piercer I’m sorry I know salt water is the best to use on piercings, but my piercings just won’t heal. They don’t heal. I just get an infection and she understood me and understood what the problem was and said well OK and I said I have very sensitive ears. They just will not heal without having that protection of being able to kill bacteria and things like that my ears are just so sensitive and so I said I have to clean my piercings with alcohol steel only way I’m gonna get them to heal. I am sorry and I said my death. Unfortunately I got so infected. The infection went from my death into my ear and I had to get eardrops and it did the same to my mom and I said I’m sorry I know salt water is the safest I know it’s the best to use for your piercings but my piercings just won’t heal they’re not healing they’re just giving an infection and they’re having issues they’re having problems so I just can’t do that anymore and of course my peers are of course, understood this, after I explained this to her that my ears and body and skin was just too sensitive and to prone to infection she said I understand I don’t use the salt water anymore just clean your piercings with alcohol are and now that’s what she recommends me to do now with all my piercings when she pierces me now she just goes go stay with your regimen and clean your ears with your alcohol. Keep with your alcohol don’t use the salt water don’t do it it’s not safe for your ears, but this is something that piercers need to be educated on to and it’s that somethings that are recommended to use on piercings aren’t the greatest for everybody and can cause an infection. Yes Q-tips just like Q-tips they can get fibres and stuff in your piercing but that’s why I double triple clean and make sure I get all the fibres off of my piercings. I still use Q-tips arm, but it’s also with the salt water solution do not rely on suggesting that to your clients all the time. Um, my piercer learn this and then fully she understands not to recommend this to me, and she tells me to clean my ears with alcohol now when I do my piercings, but not everybody some people are so prone to infection and have such sensitive skin that they actually get infections just by their own body cause it causes it themselves just buy things that are used. I got an infection just because I used salt water on my ears that was it I use the Celine solution spray on my ears, and I got an infection with that and my piercings decided to get infected and my body saw that as yeah I don’t like that and it gave her infection now. Granted all my piercings since I’ve used alcohol and then my nose piercing my days and my third holes. They are perfectly healed now and well healed and they’re happy and they’re healthy but I just can never ever use salt water on my piercings because my ears are so sensitive and I have to use alcohol.
@@alishalegrand6139 I'm type 1 diabetic and I understand your problem. I'm at a higher infection risk and successfully used Dial Antibacterial Gold Liquid soap in the shower and do ok with just saline in the morning. I took use wet qtips, otherwise nothing would get truly clean. I say we should do what is best for our bodies, as we all heal and respond differently. Even my foot doctor told me antibacterial soap and water was fine for the cut I had on my foot. If it's good enough for a doctor, it's good enough for me.
While I fully understand and respect this concern, medical studies on the use of qtips for wound care after surgeries show this as being not really a risk. Sure some jewelry setting styles can be snaggy for any fibers- qtips or gauze or your shirts and pillowcases. But when used with care and common sense around these pieces, many folks including myself have not seen any real issue with fibers. :)
My septum healed very quickly but while it was making crusties q tips were absolutely necessary. Bonus points that you can also get the boogers out with them while it’s in the sore and untouchable stage 😂
antibacterial soap is not recommended for fresh piercings unfortunately. saline wound spray is the only real reccomended aftercare product (NOT homemade salt water) as saline is isotonic.

As a fellow cruster i feel so safe here
Thank you!! Everyone needs to watch this video. I’m team q-tip as well. I never thought about climate affecting piercings.
Any tips for removing crusties on a double tragus? It's in a place that's difficult, if I look in the mirror, my hand goes in the wrong direction and if I just blindly wipe around I feel I might be poking and moving the jewellery too much. My partner helps me when I do see him but that's not often so the crusties really build up
also lynn do u think u can do a vid on piercings & skin conditions? i have excema & get irritation bumps pretty easily and would like to know more!! thanks :)
This is gonna be a hot take on r/piercing
I’m just here to stir the pot you know?
Yeah I posted this video there and it got deleted... I'm honestly done with r/piercing it has become so censored and elitist.
Haha that sub
😂😂😂 WARM SHOWER AND SALINE SPRAY ONLYYYYYYYY 🙄
Not me thinking you said “it was probably around 1718” I was like, babes you’re not that old
You’ve discovered my secret
Depford NJ. So crazy to hear a shout out to a brown like that.
i've been using qtips with saline to clean my septum for the past month and a half.
im team qtip!! always have been lol :) i have to soak em in saline to clean my piercings because otherwise my piercings get extremely cranky smh. I was never one of those ppl who could let some water over them in the shower or just do a quick spray at my piercings w saline
Some of us need the extra qtip clean!!! There’s no shame in it.
When I got my first piercing which was my faith piercing I was told to only use the liquid dial soap and rinse it in the shower and I developed bumps so I tried using saline and Qtips and they went a way like a week or two later .
Dial soap??! What year is it. 😭 I’m so sorry you were given such bad advice.
Any tips for triple vertical helix freshly pierced
I use the q tips with one pointy end they work perfectly wet with saline
Great video! I heard depford nj and it caught my attention haha right near where I am!
Agree - team Q-tip. Only thing that gets to the nooks!
Those are some MAD CUTE earrings. I LOVE IT!
😂 love the crusties! Omg you rock.
#prowetQtip definitely
Love this. I get chewed out by people all the time. I’m a part time qtipper. I use it wet. And dry with a paper towel mixed with a blow dry 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
I LOVE your quartz ear weights. They're so cute!
HELL YES love this topic!! and sidenote, your makeup is incredible?! i'd love a GRWM or even a tutorial on this look!! sooo cute!!
There are pointed tip q-tips that work well when needed.
throwing toothpicks in the ring as an aftercare tool, they do the job for me super well
Ok I'm absolutely switch to qtips to clean because I have so much very dried on gunk that doesn't want to come off, but I've been so scared to use them.
They aren’t the devil! Just be aware when you use them and you’ll love them. I promise!
I definitely have problems where my jewelry spins too much when I use q tips and then I get irritation bumps that form. But I have a hard time removing the crusties that are there!
Me 2 . My daith dont like it
Do you have any specific advice for healing a septum?
I LOVE YOUR RAW CRYSTAL EARRINGS!!!
I have a new daith and it is absolutely impossibly to clean it without a q-tip. I just can't get my fingers in there.
are crusties a sign of the piercing still healing?
they can be for the first week or few weeks depending on the piercing, but pus, inflammation, heat, and irritation bumps are all signs you should check back in with your piercer because they are symptoms of an infection
Can sleeping with bandaid over piercing cause irritation bump?
oh I did not think someone would use qtips dry :| besides that, qtips vary so much in quality. I used bamboo/cotton ones, wet with NaCl solution (in those small ampoules). first, a drop on a piercing to let it get wet and then gently brushing with wet qtip. then spraying with colloidal silver (as advised by piercer). then if too much water was left I'd gently pat with cotton pad, but around the piercing, not the piercing itself. whatever remained would dry up quickly. it was quick and effective, did that with ears and nipples.
if I was to just let the water do the thing piercings would most definitely remain dirty. the crust would get softer, with perhaps bigger bits falling off, but this is not what cleaning is :/
one time I couldn't find those specific qtips I bought at piercing place, so I went with similarly shaped ones.
ooooh boy, that went bad. it looked like the second they got wet they started to lose it's shape.
I have some blog posts about it but I’ll probably make a video eventually! Honestly I do the same with my anchors haha
@@Lynn_Loheide yay I’ll go check it out thanks so much! 🧡
That’s how my piercings are if I don’t use Q-tips, I can’t get the crust of it sticks right to my piercing and it’s really tough
hello! i just got my bridge and my vertical labret pierced yesterday,my piercer didn’t give much advice on how to heal them other than to come back in a few weeks to change piercing, i was wondering what the most affective way was to heal your bridge ? i’ve heard slot about the litha method but im just really nervous, i’ve wanted a bridge piercing forever and i’ll be so heartbroken if it rejects please help:(
Check out the aftercare section on my website! It covers all of this!

I have tried the saline and gauze thing for my rook and it just isn't possible, I have *secretly been using qtips to get that gunk off
I wish I knew how this was supposed to work for like 90% of rooks cause it just like. Doesn’t lol. They are so hard to get to!!!
Here for your outfit.. makeup and look. Gorgeous gal
idc what anyone says I will use a wet q-tip to clean my piercings no matter what. I've had personal issues because of bad cleaning advice from a piercing and it left permanent issues
Yay! Team QTip! 💚💚👍👍
Started this video immediately after cleaning my piercing with a wet q-tip lol
Omg wait tell me how i live right by 12 oz 😳
Go see aj and tell him I love him 💖
People need to learn to not make Q-tips so bad, to use on your piercings for cleaning, but they also need to learn that piercers need to learn this to suggesting or telling your client that they have to use salt water to clean the piercings.
Wet a tips, so the fibers don’t get stuck in the crust. ❤
Getting fibers in piercing isn’t worth it for me
While I fully understand and respect this concern, medical studies on the use of qtips for wound care after surgeries show this as being not really a risk.
I'm fully healed, but I still wet my q-tips and add antibaterial soap to it to clean my piercings due to the fact that I only have one hand
antibacterial soap is not recommended for fresh piercings unfortunately. saline wound spray is the only real reccomended aftercare product (NOT homemade salt water) as saline is isotonic.
