As a Springbok fan, Daniel Carter was not a player, he was an experience. He would come to your country, to your stadiums, in front of your very eyes and just tear your team to pieces. But instead of becoming hated, the man just had so much charm that you considered it almost an honour to see him blast your side into submission.
Carter might be a god in New Zealand, but he isn't far below that in South Africa. He is rugby royalty and amongst the best we've ever seen.
His kicking (out of hand and from the tee) can best be described as a merger of the best aspects of Wilkinson, Dupont and Libbok and will probably be how he will best be remembered.
Me though... I took inspiration from his body positioning. Go look at how he stood while receiving the ball, with his shoulder facing the opposition. Simple gesture, sure, but that put the wings on notice that they need to watch out for one of those looping kicks. Or maybe a grubber kick forward? A drop goal? Maybe he wants to charge into the opposition? Then, nope, jk lol, he just passed it to the next guy!
This in my mind is a little bit of a secret cheat code to gain yourself an extra split second on the field - because you KNOW Carter can do whatever horrible thing your mind can conjure up. But still, you had to try and anticipate it and that means that no, your players are not charging forward. Meantime, just that split second was enough for Carter to see a gap, overlap, or a player out of position (and doing a different horrible thing to you, that your mind did not conjure up).
Another thing people forget what a massive boot this man had. While Frans Steyn will go down as the greatest distance kicker of the professional era, I've seen with the very two eyes God gave me Carter slot home a 63 meter penalty at Loftus Versfeld. Out of hand, he could arguably kick even further.
In my mind, his best performance is one that very few people even care to remember - the second test of the BI Lions tour in 2005. It was a wet field in rainy conditions and running rugby was not on the menu. So this punk kid starts at ten and basically delivers the perfect flyhalf performance. His reading of the situations, his employment of different types of tactical kicks to his usual and his decision making told young me at the time that I was watching one of the greats of the game in action.
He was a master craftsman, quietly turning a hunk of wood into the most beautiful of furnishings.
What a privilege it was to see this man play and I hope that he knows that no self -respecting South African will ever let him pay for his own drinks here. And that whenever people start bringing up the stupid Dupont/GOAT argument, Dan Carter is literally the first or second name that we refute that silly argument with.
He has won not just our favour, but our hearts as well.

The fact people even try to debate Wilkinson is laughable to me.

Only reason Wilkenson was so great is because his kicking was excellent and he kicked and drop goaled England to a world cup win. Other than that he was just a "Good" flyhalf.

I guess his England teams were one of the most successful northern teams ever but DC is the GOAT 10

    • @randomlyfactual1943
      @randomlyfactual1943 15 днів тому

@@cubesc5638Oh my goodness. While I am firmly in the camp of DC being the Perfect 10 and the greatest to ever play in the position, I have to defend the honour here of one Jonny Wilkinson, because both you and OP are very very wrong on this. And the first man to say that would be Carter himself, who openly called Wilkinson an a huge influence and inspiration to him.
Both Carter and Wilkinson were blessed with a great pack of forwards, a key ingredient for a great ten. But though Wilkinson did have a formidable backline to play alongside him, Carter was on the field with some tactical nukes in the backline. Its easy to get credit for your distribution when Mauger, Umaga or Nonu thunders through the midfield.
Secondly, his kicking. You call it excellent, I call it a redefinition of what kicking should be. He did not slot home that one drop goal, he slotted hundreds of them. Straight ones, long ones, skew ones, left foot, right foot. The man just didn't miss. I'm going to venture a guess and say that neither you or OP has ever had to kick out of hand or drop kick a ball with a loose forward charging at you. Go to your local rugby club and find out what's that like. Once you are released from hospital, come back and tell us how hard it was. Jonny Wilkinson was the undisputed king of this very aspect of the game.
Third, his decision making was the best I've seen until Carter rose to fame. Just by him being there, you couldn't just charge forward in defense, because he would, wpuld and did pubush you for being a hair out of position. He would kick pinpoint kicks in behind your wings, he would kict to the middle if your 15 was roaming around and his high bombs were delivered with immaculate precision.
Now anyone can argue that Wilkinson was great only because he played in a great team (a common argument against all great flyhalves like Carter, Barrett, Pollard, Larkham, Sexton and Cooper). To refute that, I submit into evidence "Rugby World Cup 2007".
In 2007, England went to SA and got absolutely thrashed. Wilko was injured and only played in the second game. Final score in the first game was 58-10, the biggest points defeat by current world champions.
At the 2007 world cup, the very same Boks destroyed England 36-0 without Wilkinson, the biggest defeat of a former or current champion in the history of the tournament. England barely scraped past the USA nad Samoa as well - they were on course to be a laughingstock.
But then Wilkinson came into that absolutely pitiful team and delivered some of the best rugby of his career. Playing ten man rugby (because his backline was a disjointed mess) he put Australia to the sword in the QF and then dispatched with France (the same team that knocked out the ABs and hosts) in the semis.
Onto South Africa in the final. Against one of the strongest Bok teams of the last fifty years, Wilkinson delivered an immaculate performance, eventually going down only 15-6.
From a thirty six point drubbing, to a nine point nailbiter, with just his addition to the team sheet. THAT is how good Jonny Wilkinson was.

Wilkinson was great but DC won more games. Obviously being the 1st 5 for the ABs helps, just imagine Wilkinson playing for the ABs. For me, DC was better than Wilkinson when he beat the Lions. The GOAT.

While Wilkinson is a legend and one of the greatest ever, he loses to Carter in two key aspects:
      1) The length of his tenure. Wilkinson achieved immortal status, sure, but he never regained that 2003 magic. Carter meanwhile, was a one man tour de force from 2005 to 2015.
      2) Performances against the Springboks. The Boks are one of the two greatest sides in the entire history of rugby. In sheer amount kf wins and win percentage, Carter takes the cake here. But then there is historical context as well; the Boks of 2002/3 that faced Wilkinson was arguably the worst Bok team of all team. Carter though, he faced us during a time when we won Rugby Championships, a World Cup, Player of the Year awards and Lions tours.
For those two reasons, Carter will always have my vote as the greatest fly-half in the history of the game.

The reason in my non-expert opinion that Dan Carter was better than Wilkinson is that he always wanted to go for the try first even though he was sniper with his kicking accuracy where JW was in love with the three....

Anyone wearing the NZ 10 jumper is destined to be great, with the foundation laid by the deck...I rated Luke McAllister a better 10 then DC, based on their U/20 WC... But what do I know! Just another South African chiming in 🇿🇦🇿🇦😅 We're on a high now, but NZ All Blacks will be very interesting to see 2025... Especially if they get rid of their Achilles heel! 💚🇿🇦

Unfortunately some aussies haven't a clue with nothing to say & just Troll. lm a Mozzie born in NZ & lived in Oz since black & white TV. Without a doubt NZ is the greatest rugby country in the World. Australia has many great athletes in many sports & that is the problem for Rugby. You can make a better living in OZ playing football, soccer, rugby league & so many other sports compared to Rugby Union. If there was no Aussie Rules & they played Union instead the Wallabies would be awesome. What counteracts that is NZ 's smaller population. Let's face the absolute truth, NZ & OZ are 2 of the greatest sporting countries in the World. There you go both countries are great. South Africa are a good sporting country as well 👍
