My parents came legally. They both had 2 jobs, my mom's one job was sewing dresses for 25 cents a dress, 12 hour days, no air conditioning in summer just open windows and lousy heat in winter. Once she had children she was a stay at home mom. My dad by then had one job, a long shore man. Monday thru Sunday, 12 plus working days, in the cold, in the heat in the rain in the snow. It felt like an ice cold bucket of water was poured on me. I got a job and worked with what I had until I applied for DACA in 2012 and payed taxes every year with NO government assistance. To us it was an embarrassment to ask for government assistance if you can work. Ever since I got a work permit I’ve been doing everything by the book and have gotten good salary jobs but I’m still not a resident and much less a citizen. Around 4 years ago when they opened the borders I’ve met people who came in faking Asylum and already got their work permit with social security and are in a path to residency. How is this fair?? They don’t even pay taxes and laugh at how easy it was to get in. What about us who came here as children, who speak perfect English, studied and graduated here and have been paying taxes all our lives. Even if I wanted to go back to México how can i live there? The guest speaker saying how she arrived as tourist and changed to student by simply doing an English language course is exactly the sort of people that should be kept out. My country Australia which also sucks heaps with immigration, just banned people from doing that. She knew before she left her home country that she would change her visa on arrival and cheat the system.
