Oftentimes when building a model railroad, it can be difficult to avoid flat, empty areas in your scene. Maybe the landscape upon which you’ve designed your layout is made up mostly of cornfields, or perhaps your train’s tracks pass through an industrial town without much other than a few buildings.
Expand your model railroading knowledge when you sign up for the free MRA newsletter. You’ll receive the latest videos, articles, and tips delivered right to your inbox! bit.ly/3gGUJyt
For those straightaway stretches of track lacking in visual intrigue, there are a number of simple things you can do when building a model railroad to minimize the amount of empty space in your layout and keep your viewers’ attention. In this lesson, we teach you a variety of expert tips and techniques you can utilize while building a model railroad to quickly and smartly fill a layout to distract your viewers from the empty spaces in your scene.
Filling out a scene when building a model railroad
As you go about planning and building a model railroad, before you even start to add the finer details to a scene, you can include a number of small touches that will shrink the amount of empty space in your layout. To help you de-emphasize any flatness in your railroad layout and keep your viewers’ focus on the important features, NMRA Master Modeler Gerry Leone teaches you how to implement elements such as backdrops, buildings, and painted rails as you’re building a model railroad.
Gerry begins his demonstration on building a model railroad by showing you the proper way to use a dark paint marker to give the rails on your tracks the appearance of rust. He also talks about the importance of adding larger industrial buildings and curves to flat, straight stretches of track in order to create the illusion that there is less space than there actually is.

Amazing how a few temporary photos for the backdrop made a HUGE difference.

Thanks for the photo shop info.. I have pretty good success w/ airbrushing my rail, masking switch points and holding a piece of paper behind to block overspray, it goes really fast! David. BAC V RR.

Good tips! If you model your buildings separately, when your done at the work bench you can set them up on the layout to store them until you can figure out their permanent home. I like to model each of my buildings with its own base and scenery for this purpose! Makes them easier to incorporate into the layout.

Are you wiping down the tops of the rails after you use the paint pen? Are you just using a dry cloth or a solution to do that?

I was kind of wondering about that myself.

    Awesome cool video!
I was wondering if it would be more logical to simply spray paint the entire rail and ties with Rust-Oleum... and then wipe the tops of the rails with thinner or thousand grit sandpaper?

Pheeeew !! I was worried I'd have to decipher an English accent again !!
Far as spraying switches (TOs), I have sprayed many of them and the paint never has ruined one of them physically or electronically...Switches are not as delicate the way we're made to believe.
Paint em any way you like and later just file, sand, rub away any paint where necessary. And you don't need to mask anything either..
Those pens are more problematic than a light spray is..The felt gets shredded by the different things sticking out.
Don't believe me ? Spray one switch and see how easy it is to make it function normal. Most times it's zero work needed; nothing ruined.
