  • "I call myself Hundred Waters, and Rainy Day because I believe without pure water mankind couldn’t exist.”
Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000), has been described as one of the most controversial and notorious artists of the 20th century.
Hundertwasser lived and worked for the most part of 27 years, based in the Bay of Islands in Aotearoa, New Zealand. His austerity has fostered an image of him as a ‘man alone’ a solitary and somewhat isolated figure eking out an existence in the face of obscurity and misunderstanding. The myth has obscured the fact that his legacy in the world amounts to a multi million dollar industry, 36 unique architectural structures to date, more than 1000 paintings and public awareness raising poster campaigns that garnered the support of millions of ecologically conscious fans around the world.
The Hundertwasser Toilet provides a striking example of the powerful draw of Hunderwasser’s unconventional architecture. The toilet is visited by more than a hundred thousand people each year and is a testament of a building’s contribution to the process of urban transformation and economic revitalisation.
This documentary will step inside the world of this outsider artist who went from being a painter who “couldn’t give his work away” to become one of the planets most successful and well known, generating an oeuvre with profound eco political and aesthetic reach.
An artist who believed painting was a religious activity, Hundertwasser used his art and ‘architectural doctoring’ as the medium to deliver a crucial and profoundly positive message to the world. A loner who was seldom alone, a shy, inhibited and intensely private character who appeared nude in public and was famous for guerrilla style self promotion; Hundertwasser represented the paradox of an intensely individualistic artist who worked his whole life to serve the larger good of society.
Produced and Directed by Amber de Boer and Gaby Lingke.

Absolutely fantastic footage of Hundertwasser, never seen him speak before, seemed like a really nice guy. Found out about his genius through Pierre Restany's excellent book "Hundertwasser, The Painter-King With The Five Skins". Thanks for sharing!
