I enjoy Mr. Thorton very much singing this, but the acting was as emotionally thrilling as when he sang "being alive" in the same show. I found him concentrating on his vocal technique to make all the sounds required of him. Please do not get me wrong, I did enjoy him singing this number, but did not get caught up in his over all performance much the way I did with him doing being alive. This man has an enormous amount of potential, and it would be amazing to watch and hear him grow over the years.
Certainly creditable for either performer here. Each a well developed vocal style yet this short in characterization compared to the motion picture originals for instance. Unfair perhaps, but Jones and McRae did set the standard. That will come, certainly. Meantime, if not yet familiar with Bryn Terfel's recording, do give it a listen.
